Wednesday, April 7, 2010 - Simple Series III: My Birthday (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): Only Didier Dagueneau could make such a Sauvignon Blanc. Very young, far too tight at first, but already excellent. Nose was rather reticent at first, but there was great depth and complexity, with minerally stone and flint mixed in with grapefruit, flowers, a touch of meadow grass, lifted passion fruit notes and little savoury, earthy bits. Palate had a rich, creamy texture, but was underline by a laser-like beam of bright, fresh acidity. All very nicely integrated though, with clean fruit flavours of ripe pink guava and ripe grapefruit, along with slightly honeyed notes weaving in and out of the tight structure. This gave the wine a real sense of elegance and focus. Finish was extremely impressive. Super long, smoky mineral notes mingled with earthy tones and just went on and on. This was not quite as expressive as the 2004 or 2006 that I had last year, but I thought it had great purity of expression and a nobility lent by its fine-boned structure that the other two wines did not. If anything, it was even better on day two, when the last glass or so left overnight in the bottle showed just superb integration, intensity and focus - a beam of pure, minerally Sauvigon Blanc that ran the palate from attack into its tremendously impressive finish. An iron fist in a fruity velvety glove indeed. My last bottle - I only hope that whoever is taking over this great name will continue to make such great wines in memory of Didier Dagueneau.
