When I took this bottle out of the cellar, I still remembered the marvelous 2006 that I drank a few months earlier.
At the opening, it already gets complicated: dry cap, pegged, which breaks in 2.
And as soon as you pour a glass, the color calls out: it's cloudy, as evolved as a 40-year-old wine. It is confirmed in the mouth: it is cooked, maderized and sour with an acrid smell. The passage in decanter will sign his death certificate. Infuriating.

Peaflower, flint, lemon, ceramic clay, fruitstone, almonds, greene gooseberry, nettle, very deep complexity, medium+ acidity, long finish, high concentration, well balanced, all in all a outstanding wine, 95p. Changed several times during the night.

Such an intelligent wine that keeps you thinking while enjoying every sip of it
Deep lemon color. Enchanting complex nuances of acacia flower, hay, lemon verbena, honey, grilled nuts, smoky flint, lime, spicy sweet vanilla, some toast. Medium bodied with sharp acidity, it offers magnificient depth and ultra precision. Lingering flavours combining terroir, fruits, oak and time. Salute to Didier Dagueneau! It can easily age and last for a decade+

Elderberries, some gooseberries, spicy in the aftertaste (white pepper), needed some air to unfold, a complete wine, no problem to keep it another 5 to 10 years.

Chez SC: it needed air to blossom, after 10 minutes in the glass appeared gooseberries, minerals and flintstone. Typical Sauvignon notes with lot of terroir behind.

The nose here is more waxy than honeyed, little bit of lanolin, well integrated oak, very fresh and clean. The Sauvignon grassiness leans towards a more dried grass or hay note. On the palate, this is reminiscent of older Laville Haut Brion. Dry, crisp, and textural. Not Riesling stone fruit or Chardonnay tropical fruit, it’s more a ripe pear with some underripe pineapple and green apple skin. Lots of staying power here with a very long finish. Unique and hard to pin down as I don’t have much experience with these. Some flinty minerality and stone.

93+ pts

From a magnum, very rare. Nose is grassy with grapefruit, lemon peel and peach. Palate is on the ripe side with some acidity and minerality. This wine is not my style. Other people liked it more than I did.

Once upon a time before I joined Cellartracker, not long after DD had sadly died, I was dining in a Best Western hotel restaurant in Chartres and noticed this wine on the list. I had tasted Silex before so, despite the price, I took the plunge and was rewarded with the best bottle of white wine I have ever tasted, by some distance. A few years later I came across this bottle in a bin end in London and again despite the price I took the plunge. Opened for my birthday with much anticipation and having been carefully stored since purchase I am sad to say that although a very good wine this bottle was clearly past its best. Yes I was expecting a full bodied intense experience so different from Pouilly-Fume of a normal kind, but this was over honeyed, almost sweet with no apparent acidity to balance. For those to you lucky enough to still have some of this may I suggest you consider drinking soonish, or alternatively send it on to me c/o Cellartracker!

Old World Wines at Spoon & Stable (Spoon & Stable, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 + glass over an hour. A mix of fresh youthfulness and age creates an incredibly focused wine. The minerality is sublime, flint, fusil, wet stones, smoke, citrus and subtle clementine on a complex and powerful nose. The palate is focused and expansive with such elegance and finesse seldom seen in typical SB, seamless Of course, this is anything but typical. A masterful wine of immense beauty. Such a treat, a pristine bottle.

Ça demeure très long.

Served after a quick decantation. Muted nose at first, opening up after a while and displaying aromas of butter, citrus fruits. It is fat, deep and long, with a very nice tension and a lovely acidity. Very focused and balanced.

Good wine, good food, good company (Park Avenue Winter): Poured from a magnum. There is no doubting this is Sauvignon blanc - it has that straight out green grass, a bit of lime, definitely very crisp although not tart. When NZ makes SB, this is what they are going for I think. Very well done version of that style.

This wine has definitely improved over the past two years. It is gaining weight and complexity. Decanted. Closed for the first 45 min. Then it began to blossom. Great weight, acidity, minerality. Melon, grapefruit and white flowers. Very long finish.

Initially tight and reticent with a strong mineral character. Opened beautifully with 45-minute decant. Minerality still there, but overshadowed by melon, grapefruit and white flowers. A long finish. Fought with a celery soup, but perfect with sous vide duck.

A much sought bottle that has rested in the cellar until its final day
Nose: slow opening giving space to hints of muskmelon and pineapple, just ripe and right, embraced by the expected fumé notes and the minerality, alas IT HAS minerality at the nose that can be clearly detected. It's a straight nose getting right to the point. No fuss, nothing unnecessary jst emotions.
Mouth: a perfect acidity. Perfect for the wonderful way it has to show acidity in bunches without being overwhelming and dominating. Eternal aromatic persistence for an experience I would have loved to be perennial.
It's not a matter of elegance or equilibrium. The Silex just changes the rules i was used to.
This wine was noticeable young, maybe too young to be opened - evne considering the warm vintage - but it had to be tonight and this way.
The last masterpiece by DD... the last bottle... until our paths will meet again.
No more words needed. Just emotions.

UWS (@ JB): At first I thought the bouquet was a bit locked, but soon yellow fruits and citrus appeared. On the palate yellow fruits, beautiful fresh acidity and a bit aromatic. Concentrated and enormously tasty. Beautiful and clean wine with a great length. Was in fact still quite youthful.

An evening through the Loire valley (Imperial Treasure SPD, Paragon): This was served blind in the first flight along with the Buisson. A bit closed when poured; Nose wasn't giving much at all, just a very slight tinge of tropical fruits. Palate was equally tight, but one can certainly identify with the minerality and freshness. Did we have this too young? Am new to Loire wines - not sure what was the vintage condition there in 2005? But a 06 Silex that we had recently was showing much better than this...

Ahh Didier. You would be proud. Such an amazing Silex. Nose needs a little time, but not much. Certainly citrus (light lemon & grapefruit) of course minerals, and wet stones, but a bit of fresh grass, hints of apple slices. In the mouth, bang, structure, soft white fruit, and then lovely acidity and minerals. The finish goes on and on, at least a minute. Had this with a duck pate. Together: Heavenly. 2 bottles left of 2005. This has 5 years left. Stored at 55 since release. Didier, we miss you.

Brett's Birthday Tasting - 2013 (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): What a beautiful sauignon blanc. Explosive aromatics, lime, papaya, tangerine mix with honey, white pepper and aroma that reminds me of a nice mezcal. Sharp acid sets the stage for the tangerine, grapefruit and papaya fruit, which is all juicy and fresh. The jalapeno, white pepper, limestone and onion grass flavors add tons of complexity. Long, mineral-packed finish. Not very subtle, this wine seems like it has a few more years of stuff left to unpack.

Ripe floral and herbal aromas lead into a slightly bitter peach and stone fruit palate (Jay says 'peach schnapps'), like the Pur Sang it's also quite ripe, concentrated and intense, but the acidity's lower here and this seems to be more about brute force than finesse, finishing a little tart and alcoholic.

The Usual Suspects...a new tradition; 3/22/2013-3/24/2013 (Lucerne Inn): FROM MAGNUM: Color: Pale yellow to onion skin Smell: A kalidascope nose that is constantly evolving with subtle, almost delicate scents of citrus, quince, green apple, mineral, clean linen, and sea spray. Taste: Lime, quince, starfruit, green apple, chalk, and mineral Overall: Extraordinary. This is the most elegant Dagueneau I've had since the 2005 Pur Sang. I've always thought of the Silex as a more powerful and robust wine. However, this was all about elegance, refinement, poise, and beauty. I would LOVE to have more of this...and wish that I could still find it.

This is a very different wine for me. Exotic, elegant. Initial nose of citrus and petrol. VERY tight and we comitted infanticied opening this last night. However, over time tropical and citrus fruits yielded a beautiful exotic combination of acidity and minerality with lush oils.
Having said the above, I find it most interesting the consistency in notes by others and agree with each of them. Consistency in notes on CT speaks to the high quality and consistency of this wine.

This is more a textural than an aromatic wine - not to say that it lacked aromatics. Nose was dense and concentrated with citrus and mineral nuances but the palate was all the rave. Full bodied with razor sharp acidity coming through the fat mouthfeel in a way rarely seen. Long and mouthcleansing finish. Immensely drinkable and still very bright and young, not to say primary at age 7.

Quite mute on the nose other than a hint of pineapple. Compared to the 2009, this seems to have moved very little... feels as young as the 09. Underlying ripeness reveals itself on the palate with notes of golden delicious apples, but still very dry. Very structured and clearly not to be opened now.

Unbelievably good high end French sb from one of the (unfortunately late) masters of the trade from the upper Loire valley. This is in a handful of the best white wines I have had, along with the same producer's younger brother wine the Pur Sang. Highly stylistic, very dry, very pure, very clean and crisp and minerally, very well balanced and currently drinking very very well. Nose initially muted but opened up with aeration in the glass to reveal expressions of lemon grass, mango and a surprising floral note on the end. Primary flavors included abundant yet very dry and minerally tones of graphite, limestone, cut grass, lemon grass and warmer notes of pear / mango / peach on the mid - to - late palate. I absolutely recommend this wine but given the price point one cannot really pretend that this wine has a good QPR - at this price point one should expect real excellence and if this style of wine appeals to you then you will NOT be disappointed in this. 4 more bottles left....oh yeah!!!!

My Birthday Celebration (Kingyo, Marina Square): A beautiful wine - opened 3 hours before serving, this was completely in its element amidst choice pieces of Aburi Sushi. It had a beautiful nose, far more expressive than the last couple of bottles - this was literally bursting out of the glass with lovely scents of white flowers and honey, grapefruit and green mangoes, peach and pears and then a more clearly Sauvignon Blanc touch of white asparagus and ripe gooseberry aromas. Beautiful. The palate was quite a knock-out. There was loads of honey on the attack along with a nice underscore of chalky mineral, just before the fruit came in on the midpalate with notes of green mangoes, green apples and pears. Wow. There was a wonderful purity to those expressions that, again, were missing in one or two of the other bottles consumed through the years. Pass that, and into a long, powerful finish, the wine showed pitch perfect balance and some beautiful minerality that lent the soft, fleshy fruit a solid sense of definition and purity. Finally, there was just a kiss of hay at the very end that spoke of the varietal once more. I am quite sad that this was my last bottle - I thought that it was just about creeping into its peak drinking window, with little complexities coming in and the various disparate parts of the wine starting to settle and integrate, so that it seemed less "big", less in-your-face. I loved this. I should also add that it was quite transcendent when paired with the Sushi, with unxpected low-tones of truffles, earth and spice being drawn out from the wine. A triumph for the late D. Dagueneau.

Mike on Tour (Bibou - Philadelphia PA): I have never been the biggest fan of the Dagueneau wines I have had in the past -- this reinforced that (my first Silex). Nice lychee notes dominate the nose. Some minerality also on the nose. The palate is muted and does not fulfill the promise of the aromatic nose. Finish shows citrus and acid. This might age -- I dont have enough experience with these wines to know.

Mike On Tour - Philadelphia (Bibou (1009 S 8th St., Philadelphia, PA 19147)): The nose was very nice. The finish was excellent. The palate left something to be desired. Not in a bad way, just in an underwhelming way. Very tropical nose. Lychee. Lychee and more lychee and tropical fruit. 2011 Simple Series 9: Sean BOD (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 13.5 Light gold. This has opened since afternoon and indeed help to open up the wine beautifully: highly perfume and fresh, so refreshing. Perfectly ripe pink guava and pineapple surrounded by perfume floral and mineral, the aromas is truly captivating. Full bodied with very good depth and weight but remained vibrant and light, like a ballerina dancing on the palate with good class and sense of elegance that move on to very long persistent finish with mineral. A touch of greenish but the underlying sweetness and grapefruits, pineapple buffered it off to make way for the roundness and slight creaminess that caressing the palate. Very stylish, as we expected from Didier....

Sean Birthday (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck): Compared to the previous one I had this was readily identifiable as a Sauv Blanc and a rather new world-ish one at that. Sure the intensity was tongue-staining with sharp acidity and a definite minerality spine. Oily texture on the palate too. However, somehow this time round the wow factor was not there. Good but not very good considering the pedigree.

2011 Simple Series VII: Sean's Birthday (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Still really good - but this was perhaps the weakest showing of the wine so far. It had been opened some 8 hours before serving - a bit too much, or still not enough; served a bit too warm, or was the bottle just going through a weird stage - I could not quite figure it out. It still had a really interesting nose - lots of chalk, a touch of meadow grass, some alfafa sprouts, white flowers, and a nice little melange of pineapples, grapefruit, lychee. Nice stuff, and it opened up more and more with time, taking on grassy, gooseberry notes on the hour mark. It was the palate that did not show quite as well as the previous two occasions. I found it a bit heavy on the attack, creamily textured, with powerful strokes of white fruit laced with some alcoholic heat. Not the best showing then, but it still had the typical focus, persistence and definition of a Silex, with the rich fruit melding into fresher citrus notes on the mid-palate and then a long unfolding of flinty mineral, prickly spice and floaty floral notes that carried the wine all the way into a superb finish. This just went on and on, refusing to let go of its grip on the midpalate. All in all, a very intellectually impressive wine, if not quite as compellingly drinkable as the last two bottles I had.

Oh What a Night! aka Kelvin's Stag Party (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): This was a special wine. Adam hit the nail on the head when he said that you really could not call this a Sauvignon Blanc - it was a Didier Dagueneau Silex. I learnt my lesson from last year's rather hastily popped and poured bottle and, on the advice of some CT forum members, decanted this for an hour and served it at just slightly below room temperature. What a difference that made - this was ready to go from the first pour. It had a wonderful nose. Green guavas, summery meadow accents, passionfruit, ginger flowers, lemongrass, all lovely scents laced with some chalky minerally notes - absolutely glorious stuff. On to the palate then, and wow, how do I even start. It had a beautifully creamy, velvety texture, with layered, complex flavours of lemongrass, white fruit, grapefruit, fresh kaffir limes, a bit of bittersweet fruit zest, really delicious, and then there was lots and lots of stony, chalky minerally pulling away into a superbly lengthy finish. This was both intellectually stimulating and super delicious at the same time. So complex, so deep, yet it was so wonderfully integrated that it went down he hatch so very easily. Unsuprisingly, nobody guessed the varietal correct when blinded, but this certainly did not stop the wine from disappearing from our glasses at record speed - what with everyone reaching for the decanter and pouring themselves seconds. Brilliant stuff. I could drink bucketfuls of this wine. Nice now, as can be seen from my gushing, but even then, this is surely a bottle that deserves a good 3-4 years more to really shine. Bravo.

A steely wine with a strong backbone. It was served too cold but really started to open up as it warmed up. Passionfruit blended with stones. Crystal clear. A very refined style of SB. Well structured with aromas of lime and melon and medium bodied beautifully balanced flavors with perfectly integrated oak. Nothing is out of place and the taste and texture is very nice. My first Dagueneau, and was intrigued by the difference to previous styles of SB I have tasted.
Simple Series III: My Birthday (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): Only Didier Dagueneau could make such a Sauvignon Blanc. Very young, far too tight at first, but already excellent. Nose was rather reticent at first, but there was great depth and complexity, with minerally stone and flint mixed in with grapefruit, flowers, a touch of meadow grass, lifted passion fruit notes and little savoury, earthy bits. Palate had a rich, creamy texture, but was underline by a laser-like beam of bright, fresh acidity. All very nicely integrated though, with clean fruit flavours of ripe pink guava and ripe grapefruit, along with slightly honeyed notes weaving in and out of the tight structure. This gave the wine a real sense of elegance and focus. Finish was extremely impressive. Super long, smoky mineral notes mingled with earthy tones and just went on and on. This was not quite as expressive as the 2004 or 2006 that I had last year, but I thought it had great purity of expression and a nobility lent by its fine-boned structure that the other two wines did not. If anything, it was even better on day two, when the last glass or so left overnight in the bottle showed just superb integration, intensity and focus - a beam of pure, minerally Sauvigon Blanc that ran the palate from attack into its tremendously impressive finish. An iron fist in a fruity velvety glove indeed. My last bottle - I only hope that whoever is taking over this great name will continue to make such great wines in memory of Didier Dagueneau.
I had quite the same impression as mn_horn in their 1/29 note below...ours was a a light golden yellow...wonderful tropical fruit...grapefruit...lemon grass...what wonderful acidity on the palate..and a beautiful long finish that was incredible...what I cannot compare with the note is the change observed in the wine over time....cause we popped and poured.. and wow this is fantastic !!!! and how did it evaporate with two people and ~ 45 minutes ?

Birthday Dinner - Restaurant CRU (Blaine, MN): Served at room temperature. Light yellow in color with a nose of melon, some floral notes, and wet rocks. This is a very elegant wine. Exactly what you would expect from a great PF. The only dissapointment is that the Pur Sang 05.. in theory the second wine.. is so much better and this raised the expectations on the Silex. Still dont get me wrong this is a very good wine but lacks the magic. We have one more so lets see how it goes in a couple of years. I would have given it less but Nicol pushed this higher.

Very light straw colour. It smelled of much more classic SB than Pur Sang, showing wet hay, currant leaf, apple, white peach, grass. Bright, very lively, but rather soft, almost thick on the palate, chalky, a bit spicy, with some toffee (oaky?) and redberried tones. Long and warm in the aftertaste.

An astonishing wine. Starts off as a classic, zesty sauvignon - a classy, mineral wine but not perhaps extraordinary. However, within an hour in the glass it becomes a truly overwhleming experience bursting with layers of beautifully restrained fruit whilst losing none of its steely edge. Ambrosial.
Please note that this is taken from my tasting note of three years ago. Since then I have decanted bottles for at least an hour. However, I am still in two minds as to whether this is the best way of approaching things as its flowering within the glass is half the marvel and gives one some interesting options with various food pairings. I have three bottles left and will feel like a Londoner after the Olympics when they are gone.

Good colour; judiciously oaked allowing minerality to show, honeyed overtones, nuanced, polished; on the palate Sauvignon more apparent but not overbearing, weight & richness give this a lovely texture; so well balanced. Real defintion on a lingering finish, combining grace & power. No doubt will age, but too delicious now.

Elegant platinum yellow in the glass with thin legs. Right away the nose yields a bouquet with explosive elegance that makes you want to eat the glass. Just murdering you with nuance including delicate sweet aromas of melon, crushed stones, tangerine, white flowers, and heady slate as the wine warms. After four hours this just gushes minerals, soft smoke, powdered candy, honeydew, lime, and lychee out of the glass. The palate is just as profound with amazing fruit density including flavors of citrus, melon, stalky elements, and buttered pear on the ultra long finish, all supported by a tremendous foundation of mineral salinity. Laser like focus, velvety texture, and crystalline fruit which is utterly captivating with tremendous complexity and structure. No sign of slowing down after four hours, the palate picks up tremendous flavors of lime and herbs combining with the essence of minerals leading into Granny Smith apples on the finish. Just goes on and on and on. This is the quintessence of Sauvignon Blanc taken to the nth degree. The texture, minerality, and fruit density take this wine to a level I have never experienced with this varietal and it does this all while killing you softly like your first lost love. An emotional wine, I am easily lost in the depths of this haunting seductress. Without a doubt the 2005 Silex has exceeded my lofty expectations. In my limited experience, easily and truly the greatest white wine I have ever consumed. We have indisputably lost an unparalleled genius with the passing of Didier Dagueneau.

Tried Eddie LeClerc's technique of decanting and aerating. The wine picked up weight, and it mineral pineapple flavors emerged. At this junctuure doen't drink as well as the Pur Sang, but time will tell. I'll wait a 2 years before trying again.

Nose of citrus and a slatey/mineral like aroma. The palate had green apple, lemon, grapefruit and was just packed with a very pleasant minerality. This wine was very powerful, but seemed to be weightless. This was the first time that I have experienced a wine like that. This wine was just amazing how it carried itself so well. Probably the best white wine that I have ever had. Long, long finish.

Clear, pale straw core with a huge green tinge and a wide watery rim. Wine looks youthful. The nose is clean, bright citrus, light jalapeno and minerality are most evident with a gooseberry and stemmy-ness in there as well. In the mouth this wine is dry. Moderate acidity is balanced with a medium fruit intensity of lemon peal, canned peach and apple. Tonnes of minerality and very green. The alc is a bit heightened. Moderately long finish of stemmy green-ness and minerality. Good Quality Drink now - 5 years
I was very excited for this wine as i am a huge Didier fan but I think I will stick with his buisson renard for a few bucks less.

Victor's Roof Garden: 05 Silex and 90 Cantenac Brown (NYC): So, I should hate this. It's white, it's french, it's sauv blanc, for heaven's sake. 0 out of 3, right? I don't know why, but it worked. This is easily the best white wine I've had, from anywhere, in who knows how long. This was bright, light (but not thin), vibrant, refreshing, citrus fruit, but not acidic or sweet. Great medium finish. Terrific wine.
Problems? It costs $95, which is too expensive for a white wine, in my mind. Further, as soon as it moved just slightly from ideal temp, it became too traditional (as sauvs go). Overwhelming minerality. This was great, but I'd never pay for it again.

I cannot believe that this is made from Sauvignon Blanc! Rich, viscous. Good Acidity. Tropical fruit and minerals along with a well balanced slight grassiness. Many things in common with a Sauternes. NO hints of feline excrement. Unbelievable finish. This is a once in a life time experience for me, in terms of price and quality. Mostly the former.

Tasted at The Sampler. This is obviously a stunning wine, complex, balanced, age-worthy. Grapefruit - but not at all grassy -nose balanced out with beautiful flinty-ness. That said, La Grand Cote is a third of the price and very nearly as good....

KSC02 does Dallas, Part 2 (Daniele Osteria, Dallas, TX): WIML94. Straw to light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose very similar to the 2005 Pur Sang but more "elegant". Notes of grapefruit and wet grass. Flavors of grapefruit, limes and oranges. "Soft" on the palate. Medium to vibrant acidity, medium body. Drink or hold.

Nose : A little shy at the start, but it soons opens and shows loads of green fruits (apples, green melon) and a fine underlying layer of minerality. Very delicate and refined, pure class Palate : Lovely, intense full bodied, lush and almost oily, fills your tastebuds, mineral notes empower the lovely fruit Finish : Long, caressing your mouth Pure class...Although I'm sure time will make this in to a real shining beauty. Needs cellaring.

On the nose initially, not much was coming through. However, after one hour of sitting in glass, a complex rush of white flowers, almond, apricot, peach and smoke enveloped the senses. The palate was lush, rich and the complexity of flavors came through and bathed the tongue with a long mineral finish. Absolutely the finest, most complex D. Daganeau Ive had the pleasure of experiencing.

A different animal all together. Started off with tropical and citrus-y notes that were clipped short by a distinct smoky/raw charcoal nose. As the wine opened the aromatics from the toasty barrels dissipated (although there remains both an element of toast and charcoal toward the finish) leaving a wonderfully full nose of tangerines, peaches and white flowers. The wine is even more rich than the Pur Sang and at this point, no doubt due to the barrel regimen, is one of the most tannic white wines I have ever tasted. On an aside, one person broke their white glass and switched over to a Riedel Oregon Pinot Noir glass and the Silex in that glass showed distinct levels of SO2 that had yet to fully dissipate. I think this is a brilliant wine that needs another 6-12 months to come together before being even slightly approachable. Again, one of the most expensive SBs in the world (wholesale was in the mid-$60s).

Deep lemon color. Enchanting complex nuances of acacia flower, hay, lemon verbena, honey, grilled nuts, smoky flint, lime, spicy sweet vanilla, some toast. Medium bodied with sharp acidity, it offers magnificient depth and ultra precision. Lingering flavours combining terroir, fruits, oak and time. Salute to Didier Dagueneau!

Ça demeure très long. La combinaison d'une grande cuvée et d'un grand millésime: quel vin!

Immensely drinkable and still very bright and young, not to say primary at age 7.

Dagueneau.

Lovely balance of ripe white stone and citrus fruits , touch of creme fraiche as well as an elegant display of sweet minerality as though from a fresh spring. Lovely wine! Delicate and balanced yet slightly schisty and oily with all natural oils. A well rounded wine. Absolutely mouthwateringly satisfying

Not in a bad way, just in an underwhelming way. Very tropical nose. Lychee. Lychee and more lychee and tropical fruit. Palate was less complex and lacked the acidity I was looking for to bolster this. The finish was pure and strong, with good minerality and fruit.

Light gold.

Bravo.
