Friday, February 17, 2012 - Opened and let sit for 10-15 minutes before pouring into a decanter. Medium to dark plum color with a rich medium body. After a relatively short decant, the wine opens with wonderful aromas of cherry, balsamic, spice, earthiness, light flowers, and moderate toasty oak which evolves to cedar as the wine oxygenates. Plenty of tart red fruit on the palate with notes of leather and spice. Still moderate acidity, and a balanced tannic structure which provides a pleasant mouthfeel. Very nice long finish which lingers with chocolate and expresso. Really shows the excellence of the 2001 vintage. Worked very well with Italian sausage, with sautéed peppers and onions.
