Drinking beautifully after close to 16 years. Decanted briefly and enjoyed with ravioli lasagna. Very noticeable bricking with the wine displaying a slightly dull garnet color. Very aromatic and complex with old leather; dried cherries; slightly tart, red berries; chewy red licorice; rosemary herbs, and old dry wood mulch, mixed with dusty dirt all supported by a still noticeable tannic and acidic structure. Medium long finish. Still has life, probably another 2-3 years if cellared properly. Throwing lots of fine sediment in the decanter.

Could be the age, could be the (poor) food match but I can't say this lived up to its reputation. Opened but not decanted ~6 hours before pouring. A bit of funk, and the alcohol slightly overpowers the juice. Dark berry, earth-tones, leather and lots of tar. Also lots of sediment from first pour thru last.

After throughly enjoying a bottle of the 2009 vintage at a restaurant dinner here in Austin recently, I figured it was time to check out one of the last couple of bottles of the 2001 vintage in my cellar. Enjoyed with baked basil pesto chicken and spinach ravioli.
Pulled from a 55 degree Eurocave refrigerator where this has resided for the last 8 years. Cork was amazing solid and tight with only about 1/3 of an inch from the bottom showing any seepage. Sat up for 15 minutes before pouring into a decanter; quite a bit of sediment in the bottle neck. Even after almost 15 years, there was noticeable bricking as the wine has turned to a cloudy, dull medium, purple reddish color, but still a medium body. Complex aromatics: dried cherries, spicy pipe tobacco, old shoe leather, drying rose petals, tomato leaf, powered cocoa, and some old earthy cedar mulch. Layers of complex flavors similar to the aromatics but with lots of dried red fruits and some chewy, red licorice. Tannin and acid backbone are sound and should support a couple more years of cellaring. This is fully mature, so depending upon cellar conditions, this could drink well for another 1-5 years. IHMO, I can say categorically, this probably won't improve, given clear evidence of having reached full maturity. Enjoy!

This bottle was much better than one we had recently and more representative of the great vintage. Wine is drinking very well now but can probably age further. wish I had more than the 1 1/2 glasses that night.

Very nice not overly complex. Garnet in color. Plum and dark fruit on the palate, just a bit a vanillaish oak...medium finish. At this price point for a Brunello, a very good value. Went great with Puttanesca and a Caesar.

Opened and let sit for 10-15 minutes before pouring into a decanter. Medium to dark plum color with a rich medium body. After a relatively short decant, the wine opens with wonderful aromas of cherry, balsamic, spice, earthiness, light flowers, and moderate toasty oak which evolves to cedar as the wine oxygenates. Plenty of tart red fruit on the palate with notes of leather and spice. Still moderate acidity, and a balanced tannic structure which provides a pleasant mouthfeel. Very nice long finish which lingers with chocolate and expresso. Really shows the excellence of the 2001 vintage. Worked very well with Italian sausage, with sautéed peppers and onions.

Decanted and poured, this wine begins with aromatics of maple, decaying leaf, red cherry and earth. Airing relegates the maple, earth and leaf to the background where a balanced, mature bouquet of black cherry, leather and balsamic notes emerge. The color is a tarnished light to dark ruby that is appropriate for the wines age. The mature, medium bodied palate begins with a somewhat short finish that lengthens with airing. After about thirty minutes the palate displays balance and completeness. The wine fails to display a high degree of complexity but does drink well now with airing. This is at or around maturity.

I love(d) this wine. Rich, full, blackberry, dark cherry, leather, loam and spice with a notable mid-palate and finish of burnt chocolate. Had it with an Italian beef/butternut squash soup. This was my last bottle. I'll miss it.

Wonderful Brunello opened with family at dinner last night. Classic dark ruby color but with a translucent quality. This wine was opened but not decanted for 1 hour prior to serving. The initial glass was closed and some folks commented they liked the 2004 Nozzole Chianti much better that we had first. I told them to give it some time. Well after awhile the Brunello started to strut its stuff, earthy, smoky overtones, dark cherries and a crisp acidity. The tannins were still firm so I think this could last 3-5 years more. By 10pm I had a last small glass the wine hit its prime, with a wonderful nose and velvetly feel.

This wine was decanted and poured. It showed well from beginning to end. This is currently showing in an outstanding drinking window. On the bouquet it shows black cherry, chocolate, cigar ash and spice notes. It is a dark ruby that is correct for the wines age. The medium bodied palate shows a balanced combination of fruit, acidity and tannins. The palate demonstrates depth and complexity. This wine drinks well now and is most likely at or around its peak. It will most likely not benefit from additional bottle age but should continue to show well over the next 3 to 5 years.

Opened up after an hour - great floral nose of violets with some leather. Well balanced on the attack and mid with tannins noticeable on the finish. Went really well with Italian food although after another couple of hours and without food tannins seemed to dominate a little.

Deep red color right out to the edges in the glass. Musty aroma with hints of bright red berry and leather. Tart red berry flavor with noticeable acidity, but well balanced with the tannins. It could go a bit longer but I think I will finish the final bottle in my cellar within the next 12 months.

Brunello that is somewhere between Old and New World style. Odd nose a first, but opened up in an hour. Blackberry, dearth, leather - balanced. Day Two started to slip -- more acid, less fruit.
A bit of a disappointment for a great vintage.

Had at dinner @ mikes, we initially had an excellent Darioush Syrah, had the brunello w dinner. We decanted for at least an hour. This wine did not have the fruit of a syrah, but was the best Italian wine I've had in a long time. Very smooth, long lasting, well balanced`, earthy, I'm glad I've got 3 more bottles. For once I wasn't dissapointed in an Italian wine.

had at B&B @ The Venetian, Las Vegas. restrained nose. pleasant leather, cherry and spice on the mid-palate but very very tight on the finish...serious cotton-mouth. eased up some with protein. this wine needs several hours in the decanter or better yet, several more years of bottle age.

Drank at B&B Ristorante in Las Vegas. Selected based upon a strong recommendation from the sommelier. He said this was drinking perfectly right now but that was far from the case. This wine was a complete beast - very tight on the back end. With food it was enjoyable but hard to drink without protein. This wine needs several more years in the bottle to come together.

Big, strong nose. Astringent, earthy, juicy. Powerful structure on palette, just as earthy and juicy as the nose. Tree bark, tight berries. Aromatic, reminiscent of bitters. Port-like nose (but not at all madierized). Paired wonderfully with a white bolognese and farfalle.
