Sunday, September 23, 2012 - Decanted for just over two hours before tasting. Inky purple colour. On the nose; fairly complex with hints of dark red berries, cherry liqueur, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, garrigue, smoky oak and a touch of barnyard funk. On the palate; dense, rich and concentrated – almost to the point of being absurd. Fortunately there’s enough structure to ensure a sense of balance. This is massive stuff! Tasty, but sadly the finer nuances detectable on the nose drowns in a tidal wave of monolithic fruit and oak once the wine hits the palate. Begs for rustic food. Worked well with lamb ragù and mashed potatoes.
