Friday, October 11, 2013 - This opaque garnet wine was tasted in double-blind fashion with our Friday tasting group. The bottle was kindly provided by J.P. The nose is advanced and complex, flaunting a bouquet of pipe tobacco, saddle leather, plum, cardamom and earth. Full-bodied and with low-to-medium acidity, its tannins have melted at this point. The flavors mirror the nose. The wine's alcohol (listed as 12.5%) is seamless and the middle palate is solid. It concludes with a medium length, tart finish. This well-cellared bottle is clearly fully mature (I guessed that it was a 1988 left bank Bordeaux). It should stay on plateau for a few more years but I wouldn't expect it to improve, as the tannins are gone and the fruit is giving way to the other flavors. Drink now-2018.
