2011 Proper Wines Syrah Stone's Throw

Community Tasting Note

Wednesday, May 14, 2014 - I was slightly worried about heat damage during shipment as there was an unexpected temperature spike the day this arrived. When the case was opened, the bottles were still cool to the touch, and the corks were not pushed out, so I can hope there is no issue. I opened a bottle to test.

Day 1: Popped and poured, drank over about six hours tonight. There was a lot of bright red fruit and a zippy acidity. Crimson to lighter red on the rim, this is medium bodied and looked more like a pinot than a syrah. There is still a hint of meat on the nose, along with some floral notes like roses. Some fruits like apricots and a lot of complexity on the nose. The acidity is very sharp, and this was much better with food, and I think it needs to settle down a bit. The finish was also more reminiscent of pn than syrah with the lack of tannin and a bit of astringence.

Day 2: Very different and much better. The wine has seemingly picked up some heft, but is still rather light...the bright red fruit has toned down a bit on the palate and there is a hint of crushed dark berries. The nose is tantalizing with floral aromas, savory notes...just lots going on. There is now a hint of tannin on the finish, which was not really visible yesterday. It will be interesting to see how this wine evolves.
