  • Tried this 11 as it was a bargain on winebid.
N of dark fruit and plum.
P of black cherry and plum, with tar and rubber. Much thinner than most years.

  • Plenty of life, beefy, iron, dirt, fruit is blackberry. A bit clumsy and not likely to improve. Drink or hold but not for too much longer I don't think.

  • A little disjointed on PnP, this came together with about an hour of air. Meaty/savory notes with a bit of herbaceousness more prominent than fruit.

  • Opaque purple with a violet rim, nose of blackberries. Tart cane pith, light fruit, medium body, a bit of bubble gum. A bit disjointed solo, but works well with some salami picante on baguette. Starting to come together with some open time. Developing a meaty texture with more time. Reserved with a nice smooth body and well integrated tannins. Yummy without being jammy. This may have plateaued, but should hold for a long time. A night later, perfectly balanced, the fruit is developing a restrained round profile, some tartness and cane pith tannins. While many do not like the cool vintages, they are my favorite and the ones I buy. Must be from drinking all that OR PN. This year they lost their estate fruit and had to purchase from others. It was a devastating winter for many. Now part of the Rotie family, both being favorite buys. Finishing four nights after opening and has developed into a restrained old world style, showing some smoky notes along with some Italian red pepper, cherries, leather and earth, lovely savory aged wine with tertiary notes replacing and enhancing the fruit.

  • I agree that this was a lean wine whose best days are behind.

  • Needs 2 hour decant. A don't enjoy this vintage.

  • I would echo what AACOLLECTION had to say about this being herbaceous to the point of "weedy". I was optimistic that all of the forest floor would cede to a bit of bacon fat, maybe some great, dark fruit. Alas, mere hints of those were all that this wine offered. Copious herbs and sticks though. Sadly, at the end of the day, this wine is lacking fruit, leaving it a bit one-sided.

  • My final btl. Pop and pour. Intensely herbaceous, with oregano, thyme and sage at first..almost a bit weedy. The rocks cabbage kicks in behind, and there was some black raspberry in the background. On the palate, very soft, with olive brine, pickle juice, black pepper, and some black raspberry. No tannin on the peppery finish. This btl was a little less impressive than my prev btl, so I might revise drink-by dates a bit...

  • Very nice nose, with loads of charcoal, dried herbs, and gamey meat. On the palate, soft acidity, but great umami and density...rather creamy, but a touch of cola..some chalky tannin on the finish, which shows some mint and pepper. Actually, much better than my previous bottle.

  • Echoing other tasting notes of late, this one seems to be on the downside, and sliding pretty quickly. Rocks funk on the nose dies fast, leaving the wine one-dimensional and with flavors of cherry Sucrets. Drink now.

  • Drink now. Soft and smooth.

  • Seems to have peaked. Good at opening with olive tapenade, violets, a hint of oak and nice acid. Acid and the finish seems to fade within 90 mins. Drink now!

  • Consistent with previous note, only its softer. Acidity is light. Extacted fruit is balanced by good savory notes. Drink before 2020. Technical score: 90. Enjoyment score: 92.

  • Decanted 1 hour. Definitely not my favorite bottling of this wine. Lacking the Rocks Funk I love in other vintages, and showing way too much cherry fruit. This drinks more like a CV GSM than Rocks Syrah. Obviously well made wine, but not the flavor profile I was expecting. Black cherry, high acid, medium body, somewhat leaner on the fruit, as one would expect from the vintage. Drink now - 2020.

  • Drank next to a Bonserine Cote-Rotie. Double decanted. Intensely syrah: gamey, bloody meat on the nose, with ripe fruit behind it; a touch of spice in the background. Soft acidity on the palate, especially in comparison to the Bonserine, but nice salinity and good fruit. The tannin has disappeared on the finish. I would guess this is fully mature (would love to hear other opinions).

Update: on day 3, this showed few signs of oxidation. Maybe this will be longer lived than I realized.

  • Dark ruby with one fruit fly. Soft nose of violets with a whiff of oak. Dry tart fruit with some contrasting sweetness. On night two, luscious medium body and fruit, soft well integrated tannins. I've been a bit critical of the WA Syrahs of late, but this is one fine wine. Cool vintages are my favorite and the '11s have been very appealing to my palate with their restrained nature. Well balanced with a smooth mouth feel.

  • Still drinkable, but fading, past its prime. The lovely floral notes are gone, as are most of the tannins.

  • Solid bottle and good expression of The Rocks. Solid for the vintage. Needs more time and better on second night.

  • Very nice soft rocks funk on the nose. Nice fruit but finish took some time come around. Felt a bit unbalanced. Was a pop and pour so may have just needed some time.

  • Very nice drank with a Gordon and both were nice this a bit more fruit

  • Decanted 1 hour. Soft red fruit on the nose, with just a hint of Rocks Funk. In the mouth, medium bodied, light acidity, more of the Rocks Funk showing than on the nose. Red berry and plum fruit, a touch of black pepper. Perhaps more elegant and refined than I was hoping for tonight, but a very nice wine. May need some time to wake up more.

  • Super as usual. Smoked meats on nose. Long palate with bramble berry and chocolate.

  • Great surprise. Expected extracted, over-the-top gooeyness and instead got a clean, mineral-laden, old-world style Syrah that tasted like it was straight from Cornas. Just checked out their web site and now I get it. Drank over two nights but was probably best on night two. Cloudy, dark Crimson. Nose brings dark cherries, savory herbs, olives, soy sauce, mushrooms, and smoked brisket. The palate is medium, round, light on its feet, and juicy, bringing blackberries, more dark cherries, mocha, mushrooms, beef jerky, and hints of raspberries into the finish. The finish is a little jagged but long and full, with refined tannins and a good supple feel. Drink now before 2020. Nice effort, especially since their own vines froze and they had to use some neighbors fruit for this vintage.

  • My best bottle yet. If this bottle is any indication, this has settled into a great spot. On the nose olive brine, blackberry, brambles, and some smoked meat. On the palate, the acidity is softer than I remembered, but it actually works very well (acidity like a Cayuse wine). Very lightweight on the palate, but still with a nice heft in the core. A hint of iron-ore minerality and white pepper on the soft finish. Just the slightest hint of tannin with a swish.

  • consistent with previous reviews. very nice qpr.

  • Not quite as appealing as the 2010 in terms of that true 'in the rocks' flavor, but still enjoyable. It's a bit muted. I get just a touch of the meat, saline, rocks flavor. There's some mild fruits as well. It's very easy drinking and drinking very well now. Don't see it changing much although probably has a few more years. Enjoyable.

  • Some funk and floral notes but nice meaty syrah with good overtones and smooth finish.

  • This must be given time, maybe an 85 on PNP but second day
was much improved as others here have stated.

  • Much better the second night, first night tough...Similar notes to prior bottles. Solid QPR at $30

  • Notes similar to last time. Had with a steak, and this paired very well. I love the nose with a hint of a funk and lots of bright red fruits. It definitely needs some air and was better on day 2. My only complaint, which is a minor one, is that this time the acidity seemed more pronounced than last time, which made the wine seem a bit unbalanced.

  • Dark ruby red, deep gradation. Nose: very floral and funky with cherries and cranberries. I can understand those who have said this could double for a pinot. It reminds me of a Chambolle, only deeper on the fruit. There's a bit of spice box and cigar, too. As it takes on air, it deepens. Very intriguing nose, I could sniff this all night. Palate: light weight, smooth tannins, lively acidity. Initial flavors come on the savory side with iodine, thyme, lavender, cured pork, and pepper. The fruit is a tad sour, a bit unripe, but over time develops a hint of concord grape. There's underlying smoke, tar, olive juice, and crushed limestone. The tannins aren't noticeable at first, but the wine isn't flabby. However, with additional air it develops some chewiness while the acidity keeps it together. Mostly an old world wine, with just a touch of new world body. Not an extracted wine by any stretch. Finish: persistent. It'd hickory smoke and bacon fat, with some of the floral notes remaining. Sitting in a nice place now, it'll develop for another few years but isn't an ager.

  • I was slightly worried about heat damage during shipment as there was an unexpected temperature spike the day this arrived. When the case was opened, the bottles were still cool to the touch, and the corks were not pushed out, so I can hope there is no issue. I opened a bottle to test.

Day 1: Popped and poured, drank over about six hours tonight. There was a lot of bright red fruit and a zippy acidity. Crimson to lighter red on the rim, this is medium bodied and looked more like a pinot than a syrah. There is still a hint of meat on the nose, along with some floral notes like roses. Some fruits like apricots and a lot of complexity on the nose. The acidity is very sharp, and this was much better with food, and I think it needs to settle down a bit. The finish was also more reminiscent of pn than syrah with the lack of tannin and a bit of astringence.

Day 2: Very different and much better. The wine has seemingly picked up some heft, but is still rather light...the bright red fruit has toned down a bit on the palate and there is a hint of crushed dark berries. The nose is tantalizing with floral aromas, savory notes...just lots going on. There is now a hint of tannin on the finish, which was not really visible yesterday. It will be interesting to see how this wine evolves.

  • Same as last bottle drank over two night.
Wife really liked on second night (she didn't try on first).
I think it really took a second night to show what this was made of.
    Great value.

  • Popped and poured, drank over 2 nights. Opaque maroon hue. Red fruit on the nose with some pencil lead notes. Rich red fruit on the palate with some cocoa. Smooth texture. Better night 2. Not as good as the 2010 from the estate vineyard, but still nice...you don't get the meatiness from this like you did the 2010.

  • A nice wine, but not nearly as interesting as the 2010.

  • great out of the bottle. Interesting comparing it to the bottle of Result of a Crush I had last night. The Proper was lighter, brighter and less funky. I didn't pick up a lot of that rocks character tonight, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad I have more.

  • Delicious on PnP. Already in a good tasting window, no reason to wait on these. Agree with other comments that this seems to be more ready to drink than the 2010. Nice fruit, touch of funk to keep it interesting. Very enjoyable across two nights.

  • The 2011 is maturing faster than the 2010. This one is lovely....complex dark fruits, raisins, floral notes, and a curious non-tannic bitterness, combine with perfectly balanced acidity and tannins to provide purple harmony. The body is a bit lighter than the 2010 iteration, but within the acceptable range.

Altogether, at this time, I like the 2011 better than the 2010, and I'm glad I have a bunch of this. We'll end up drinking up the 2011s while the 2010s are working their way into a "proper" drinking window. Delicious stuff.

Edited later to add: I originally posted this note for the wrong wine (their Syrah instead of the Stone's Throw Syrah). I'm correcting this now, and pointing out that this wine smells and tastes distinctly like a mixture of Syrah and Pinot Noir. It also looks like Pinot Noir, with its translucent garnet color; and aeration brings out red fruits like raspberry and cranberry. The label claims that the grapes were 100% Syrah, but I'd guess that this one is at least 1/3 Pinot Noir. I'm not complaining, as the wine is excellent, but I'd be interested to hear from other consumers of this wine, whether or not they had similar experiences.

Further edit: My CT friends assure me that this wine is 100% Syrah. It is therefore a fascinating example of the possible range of the syrah grape.

  • Had to try one of the case after letting it sit for a week.
Classic "rocks" Syrah and probably one of the best QPR at sub $30 for the club price. Not as "complex" and "dark" as the 2010 but maybe early. Lighter and more feminine. 2011 tough vintage but I think they pulled it off very nicely - can't wait to see their 2012/2013 as their vines mature. Still, I love this style (Reynvaan, Cayuse, No Girls, etc) so this is right up my ally but the "weeknight version" given the price. Hope their prices don't go crazy. Seems like a no brainer to be on this list as they are doing some special things here.

  • Tasted at Full Pull. Still rocks fruit, but I guess the estate vineyard froze, so they had to purchase for this vintage. Still has the funk and still very good.
