Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - Day 1: Deep and fairly dark ruby. Got a huge burst of meat aromas right out of the bottle, along with dark berries and earth, but this blows off rather quickly. Aromas seem to mellow considerably with aeration (perhaps could even say they shut down?), with coffee smoke and a bit of toasty oak coming to the fore. Flavors offer lots of rich blackberry, dark cherry and plum, along with bittersweet chocolate and hints of leather and spice. Tannins are ripe and chewy, with good grip. Pick up more red fruit along with the chocolate on the medium length, slightly drying, finish. Excellent acidity gives this wine very good lift. Modern in style. Quite tasty with good structure. Not much complexity right now, and no real sense of terroir.
Day 2: Wow. This really went downhill. Lost a lot of fruit. Very closed aromatically. Mostly heat, spice and leather on the palate. Mouthfeel seems rougher, and tannins feel harsher. Not sure what happened. Perhaps it just shut down. Perhaps a bad vacuum seal. 90+ day 1. 86 day 2.
