Friday, May 20, 2016 - After throughly enjoying a bottle of the 2009 vintage at a restaurant dinner here in Austin recently, I figured it was time to check out one of the last couple of bottles of the 2001 vintage in my cellar. Enjoyed with baked basil pesto chicken and spinach ravioli.

Pulled from a 55 degree Eurocave refrigerator where this has resided for the last 8 years. Cork was amazing solid and tight with only about 1/3 of an inch from the bottom showing any seepage. Sat up for 15 minutes before pouring into a decanter; quite a bit of sediment in the bottle neck. Even after almost 15 years, there was noticeable bricking as the wine has turned to a cloudy, dull medium, purple reddish color, but still a medium body. Complex aromatics: dried cherries, spicy pipe tobacco, old shoe leather, drying rose petals, tomato leaf, powered cocoa, and some old earthy cedar mulch. Layers of complex flavors similar to the aromatics but with lots of dried red fruits and some chewy, red licorice. Tannin and acid backbone are sound and should support a couple more years of cellaring. This is fully mature, so depending upon cellar conditions, this could drink well for another 1-5 years. IHMO, I can say categorically, this probably won't improve, given clear evidence of having reached full maturity. Enjoy!
