90 Points

Thursday, June 30, 2016 - Dry Riesling and Burgundy night (Olea, New Haven): Fits a lot of the stereotypes of '96 - a touch lean and austere with plenty of acidity, and while it's very impressive, it's not especially charming. There's lots of ripe dark berried fruit on the nose accented by high toned spiciness, savoury earthy notes, and some maturing leatheriness, but the tannin and acid structure does dominate on the palate. It does soften a bit and open out aromatically with more air, but always feels a touch severe and austere.
