Haunting mature Burg nose - really spectacular. Lovely balance still but with time getting a little less intense. Overall superb performance for a 1996 PC.

Nose is both black and red cherry, great purity and freshness to the red and density and power in the black. Smells elegant and beautiful but also bold in a Meo sort of way. The spice takes a few minutes to really develop but shows up just beautifully, not oaky baking spices, but black pepper, tea, bay leaf, cola, in a very Vosne - Richebourg - Beaumonts direction. The palate has loads of red and black cherry too, soft silky texturally, pure, clean, and powerful. Not particularly rustic, more fresh and pure. ‘96 acid is a touch high but there is another beauty and detail that it’s no problem. Showing really nicely, imagine this is about peak and don’t see much more upside as the fruit is technically matching the acid right now. Very proper. 92 - 93.

Dry Riesling and Burgundy night (Olea, New Haven): Fits a lot of the stereotypes of '96 - a touch lean and austere with plenty of acidity, and while it's very impressive, it's not especially charming. There's lots of ripe dark berried fruit on the nose accented by high toned spiciness, savoury earthy notes, and some maturing leatheriness, but the tannin and acid structure does dominate on the palate. It does soften a bit and open out aromatically with more air, but always feels a touch severe and austere.

Magnums of Meo (Vosne-Romanee - Burgundy): From magnum at the domaine. Bright red cherry and berry aromas and flavors. Amazing freshness and perfectly integrated, elegant tannins and acid. Silky soft. Great tonight.

Second La Paulee Warmup Dinner (Corton - New York NY): Black cherry aromas with great baking spice. Similar on palate with great density and concentration start-to-finish. Very elegant. I've enjoyed this wine quite a few times the past 5 years, this was back on track after a corked bottle last summer.

Medium red in color, popped and poured and the nose is already very alluring, with lots of ripe red fruit, spices and quite floral. Medium palate with quite a good bit of depth, very rounded and supple. Quite long finish. Drinking very now but still can keep for the medium term, lovely.

Charlie Trotter's Goodbye with Jayer, Meo, and Rouget: Dark sweet stewy red fruit driven nose. More leaming toward black cherry then red. A big wine, dense with solid initial fruit, structure and good lift, but a bit disjointed tonight. Long rich wine. Less nuance and more brawny. Nice flavors, but a bit hard needing lots more time. Overall, somewhat disappointing. Fruit seems to be stripped down with time. Some wondered if this was not a perfect bottle, but I saw no obvious flaws.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): I brought this to our double blind tasting to follow up on the 6 vintages of Meo-Camuzet V-R Brulees at dinner the night before. Decanted just over an hour before serving. Fresh black fruit aromas with background Asian spice to start. A bit more lean fruit to start on the palate, but this picked up power toward the middle and finish. Spice also intensified toward the end and picked up complexity with more air and time in glass. Great acids and fine tannins that are nicely harmonious. Still a baby, perhaps just entering its peak drinking window.

Acker Merrall 1996 Burgundy Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Floral nose with really good Vosne spice, with aromas of ripe black fruit. Slightly lean at the start, but great black cherry and red cherry flavors then emerge on the palate, very lush and ripe but still completely in harmony with the wine's structure. Powerful on the finish.

Blind. Spicy, with cloves and pepper. Slight barnyard funk. Round and long on the palate, with a harsh drying finish. Not sure this will age gracefully any further.

Dark fruits. Earth notes, but fruit-forward and full for a '96. Well balanced and structured. Clean. Will certainly last/improve. Showcases the best qualities of the vintage.

Bringing Wine to Schwa (Schwa - Chicago IL): Opened and decanted around 3 PM, back in bottle at 5 PM, decanted again at 6 PM, then poured around 7:30. Still a bit shut down when poured, this wine continued to unfold and improve over the next hour. The wine had lots of “everything” – big fruit, acidity, tannins. Lots of great cherry flavors, with somewhat of a candied element on the finish. A blockbuster, sensational wine that showed beautifully. This is one the few 96's I find drinking well now.

Charlie Trotter's Farewell Dinner with Montrachet, Brulees and Cros Parantoux (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago IL): Opened 30 minutes before serving. Started off nice with red cherry and berry aromas and flavors with pretty brown spice notes and some earthy qualities. As time passed however the nose became slightly stewy and less interesting. There were some very nice elements underneath, but unfortunately it was an off bottle.

Another Final Dinner at Charlie Trotter's with "Guests" Henri Jayer, Meo-Camuzet and Rouget (Charlie Trotter's - Chicago IL): Moderately corked. Open 30 minutes before serving, started off nicely, was uninteresting after 15 minutes, undrinkable after 45 minutes. Thankfully not decanted, which would have taken away those few minutes of pleasure this wine provided.
