Friday, February 26, 2016 - A single vineyard wine from a plot planted in 1981. Part of the wine is macerated with the skins for 18 hours. Fermented over 25 days in stainless steel. 80% of the wine is kept in stainless steel tanks, whereas 20% of the wine is aged for 12 months in French barriques. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Deep lemon yellow color with a light green hue. Somewhat restrained, yet still very complex nose with delicate aromas of honeydew melon, almonds, some honey, a little bit of peachy stone fruit character reminding me of Belgian Blonde Ale, a hint of delicate nuttiness and a touch of vanilla. The wine is full-bodied, rich and vibrant on the palate with fresh, high acidity and quite intense flavors of ripe citrus fruits, tart green apples, sweet yellow apples, some almond nuttiness, a little bit of herbal character, a hint of hay and a touch of stony minerality. The finish is long, crisp and structured with bright and persistent flavors of ripe citrus fruits, stony minerality, some yellow damson, light almond character, a little bit of hay, a hint of vanilla and a slightly bitter touch of pithy grapefruit. The high acidity gives the aftertaste persistence and makes the wine end on a mouthwatering note.

A very serious, structured and intense Verdicchio di Matelica that shows some sense of concentration, yet the wine comes across more as just muscular than particularly heavy. Still very young and promises a lot regarding cellaring. Terrific focus and power here. Easily some of the most impressive Verdicchios of Matelica I've had. Great value at 18,90€.
