  • What a pleasant surprise. Ananas, tropical fruit, but also still a refreshing acidity and balance. Fantastic length. Has aged very well and I think it will still improve from here.

  • A single vineyard wine from a plot planted in 1981. Part of the wine is macerated with the skins for 18 hours. Fermented over 25 days in stainless steel. 80% of the wine is kept in stainless steel tanks, whereas 20% of the wine is aged for 12 months in French barriques. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Pale to medium-deep lemon yellow color. Somewhat restrained but also very nuanced nose with fragrant aromas of hay and timothy, some fennel, a little bit of savory wood spice, light notes of spicy red apples, a hint of chopped almonds and a touch of honeyed richness. The wine is moderately full-bodied, fine-tuned and harmonious on the palate with still relatively youthful flavors of hay and timothy, juicy golden apples, some tangy salinity, a little bit of cooked cream, light toasty notes of oak spice, a sweet hint of ripe apricots and a touch of angular stony minerality. The rather high acidity keeps the wine wonderfully in balance and lends it good sense of structure. The finish is long, layered and complex with juicy flavors of apple jam, stony minerality, some zesty citrus fruits, a little bit of toasty oak spice, light creamy notes of panna cotta, a hint of tangy salinity and a touch of honeydew melon.

This wine seems to have only gained additional depth and complexity with age without losing any of its freshness and precision. In a tasting of assorted Verdicchio wines, this probably ended up being as my wine of the night; it perhaps wasn't as concentrated as weighty as some other, more monolithic Riserva wines, but this shows simply impeccable sense of balance, complexity of flavors and even potential to develop further from here. Outstanding. Great value at 23,44€.

Deep lemon yellow color with a light green hue. Somewhat restrained, yet still very complex nose with delicate aromas of honeydew melon, almonds, some honey, a little bit of peachy stone fruit character reminding me of Belgian Blonde Ale, a hint of delicate nuttiness and a touch of vanilla. The wine is full-bodied, rich and vibrant on the palate with fresh, high acidity and quite intense flavors of ripe citrus fruits, tart green apples, sweet yellow apples, some almond nuttiness, a little bit of herbal character, a hint of hay and a touch of stony minerality. The finish is long, crisp and structured with bright and persistent flavors of ripe citrus fruits, stony minerality, some yellow damson, light almond character, a little bit of hay, a hint of vanilla and a slightly bitter touch of pithy grapefruit. The high acidity gives the aftertaste persistence and makes the wine end on a mouthwatering note.

A very serious, structured and intense Verdicchio di Matelica that shows some sense of concentration, yet the wine comes across more as just muscular than particularly heavy. Still very young and promises a lot regarding cellaring. Terrific focus and power here. Easily some of the most impressive Verdicchios of Matelica I've had. Great value at 18,90€.
