Sunday, November 3, 2019 - 2016 Montirius Gigondas Terrres dea Aînés showed a good combination of power and elegance, with a pure expression of perfectly ripe fruit without oak flavours.
The 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre was clear and deep ruby in colour, with aromas of ripe dark cherries, blackberries and bacon fat, in floral violets and earthy undertones. On the palate, it was full-bodied, spicy, with medium acidity and medium-high level of chalky tannin. The finish was rather short with some bitterness to it. The 63-hectare vineyard has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1999.
Personally, I found this wine lacking the depth, complexity or delineation to be worthy of high praises among American critics, except that it had the full-bodied richness, ripe fruit and elevated alcohol that reflected typical American preference. Some bottle age might bring out the extra dimensions of the wine, but unoaked Grenache-based Rhône blends are not known to age gracefully over a decade.
