Monday, January 20, 2020 - The 2017 Rauzan Segla was a total standout at the Union des Grand Crus tasting. Here I found a dark, seductive and remarkably pretty display, leading off with savory earth tones, tobacco, a dusting of minerals, and animal musk, and then transforming in the glass, revealing crushed blackberries with hints of dry cocoa. On the palate, it was soft, silky… sultry, displaying depths of black and dark red fruits, offset by penetrating minerals and savory spices, as inner violet florals added a fresh flourish. The finish was long, yet subtle, more whispering than shouting, with fine tannins lurking beneath its lingering dark fruits and crisp minerality.
