Thursday, May 28, 2020 - Grocery Store Wine – A New Era?

I’ve never been a big fan of buying wines at grocery stores. In the past, I usually knew what I was looking for so going to my local wine shop and usually paying a little less for the wine was worth that extra effort.

In browsing the wine aisles in grocery stores the biggest takeaway was that prices seemed to be higher and the selection centered around those mass-marketed and well-known brands, not the wines I tend to look for, or even if they have it, to be willing to pay that premium for the convenience of not having to drive all around town.

That has changed in recent weeks, as we all know too well. I’ve been trying to focus on going to only one place to shop rather than hitting all the various establishments searching for that savings. With my everyday wine selection getting fewer each week, I found myself wanting something that was not in my cellar, something different, so I toured up and down the wine aisle while shopping the other day.

While convenience pricing still seems to be in play, I did find a wider selection than I thought I would. Could it be that wine managers are taking a closer look at what wines to stock? Maybe those Millennials are focusing more on quality than price? Either way, I was very pleased and maybe just this once I could forgo the price issue.

As I glanced around, I saw a familiar label and of a grape varietal that I love:

I guess what caught my eye was that it was on sale! Only $13.99 marked down from $15.99. As I usually do, I checked my local wine shop and discovered their price was $14.99, hot diggity dog! No running around for a lower price! Although I later found it elsewhere for only $11.99, damn. I would have had to wait to get that price though.

Warming weather made this a perfect wine for the evening. Citrus and nice acidity along with great minerality and that traditional white pepper spice note, what more could I ask? Oh. It’s made with organically grown grapes to boot!

I guess I’ll have to be more observant at the grocery store from now on.

Cheers
