  • Strong on the white pepper, otherwise a normal Grüner, maybe not on the best side

  • The drunk cyclist hit most the notes last year. A bit more amber and fruit in the profile for me. Very good wine that was well received.

  • Pale yellow. Green apples, snow peas, and hyacinth. Light, fresh and went great with snapper.

  • Ripe apple and stony minerals on the nose. Medium bodied, dry, refreshing, showing some apple and citrus with stony mineral and a slightly austere finish. Decent acidic structure. Good basic GV. Had a glass at Löyly with the bowl dish.

  • Grocery Store Wine – A New Era?

I’ve never been a big fan of buying wines at grocery stores. In the past, I usually knew what I was looking for so going to my local wine shop and usually paying a little less for the wine was worth that extra effort.

In browsing the wine aisles in grocery stores the biggest takeaway was that prices seemed to be higher and the selection centered around those mass-marketed and well-known brands, not the wines I tend to look for, or even if they have it, to be willing to pay that premium for the convenience of not having to drive all around town.

That has changed in recent weeks, as we all know too well. I’ve been trying to focus on going to only one place to shop rather than hitting all the various establishments searching for that savings. With my everyday wine selection getting fewer each week, I found myself wanting something that was not in my cellar, something different, so I toured up and down the wine aisle while shopping the other day.

While convenience pricing still seems to be in play, I did find a wider selection than I thought I would. Could it be that wine managers are taking a closer look at what wines to stock? Maybe those Millennials are focusing more on quality than price? Either way, I was very pleased and maybe just this once I could forgo the price issue.

As I glanced around, I saw a familiar label and of a grape varietal that I love:

I guess what caught my eye was that it was on sale! Only $13.99 marked down from $15.99. As I usually do, I checked my local wine shop and discovered their price was $14.99, hot diggity dog! No running around for a lower price! Although I later found it elsewhere for only $11.99, damn. I would have had to wait to get that price though.

Warming weather made this a perfect wine for the evening. Citrus and nice acidity along with great minerality and that traditional white pepper spice note, what more could I ask? Oh. It’s made with organically grown grapes to boot!

I guess I’ll have to be more observant at the grocery store from now on.

    Cheers

  • Earth Day. Retail $19. Under screw. Lois rhymes with "choice" and comes from Langenlois, the town which put Grüner on the map, so to speak. Pale in the glass with a slight green tint, this is classic Grüner from start to finish. Citrus and green apple on the nose with a steely minerality. The palate is quite linear, tart and tangy, with good fruit and a decent finish. Grüner. Giddy-up. thedrunkencyclist.com

  • Vin Chicago Pickup Party & Tasting (Seven Bridges Golf Club): Retailer tasting. Bright and citrusy. Good acidity. Straightforward but an enjoyable quaffer. $11.99.
