Saturday, June 6, 2020 - 89: I was kind of surprised to discover this 2006 Malbec was still in our cellar -- in 2020 it's one of our oldest bottles. (Also of interest is that the 2009 vintage has an earlier "drink now" recommendation than this 2006!) Yet despite the age, the cork was in great condition. I'm going to chalk that up to our great cellar conditions, though we've had a few older bottles go bad recently so maybe it's just luck. If it seems like this review is wandering, you're right; this wine is so smooth at this point that it's drinking easy right out of the bottle. Good deep purple color with maybe just a tinge of brown, but great legs on the swirl and a bouquet that highlights an oaky terroir. The palate skews more toward rich dark fruit (I say tart cherry but the wife agreed with the blueberry description on the label) than the terroir I would expect in an Argentine Malbec, but this beaut is from Lake County so I'll excuse that. Did I mention smooth drinking? Age has mellowed the tannins to near non-existence without sacrificing a pleasing level of acidity that pairs great with a juicy steak. Not the most complex Malbec I've had, but it has a pleasant blend of flavors starts to creep in after being open for at least 30 minutes. I don't think further aging would help with the complexity, so if I had another bottle hanging around I would drink it now.
