Wednesday, June 23, 2021 - The cork, soaked until the last quarter inch, did its job and this wine is in great shape at 50+ years of age! The wine is brown – not garnet, but BROWN - in color with medium bordering on pale intensity. Oozing with tertiary notes, accentuated with dried florals and fruit that is incredibly (and surprisingly) vibrant! The nose is dominated by mushroom, truffle, forest floor, cooked meat and black peppercorn. There’s a hint of smoke, cinnamon, sea spray, aged and dried red fruit, and dried rose petals. On the palate, this wine has retained its acidity, which provides lift to a fruit profile that is bright, youthful and tart upon opening and quickly ripens taking on a bolder slightly stewed character with 30 minutes of air. A layered mélange of red and black fruits with dried red cherries, dried black cherries, prunes, raspberries, blackberries, stewed cranberries, stewed boysenberry, and stewed brambleberries with forest floor, black peppercorn, mushroom, umami, soy, truffle, smoke, charred cedar, and cigar box. The finish literally lasts for minutes. This bottle is in that magical sweet spot where the primary and tertiary flavors are in total harmony, the apogee of its development if you will. Amazing.
