2009 Château Gloria

Community Tasting Note

92 Points

Friday, March 25, 2022 - Popped and poured, and should have decanted, but it is still an impressive debut. Definitely in its drinking window, and as with 2003 many wines from 2009 are approachable at a relatively early age. The nose is packed full of ripe berry fruits but underpinned with pervading smoky and umami notes. The palate is still primary but the tannin is smooth and some early secondary characteristics are appearing. Everything is perfectly balanced without any residual harshness in the mouth or on the finish. The latter is on the shorter side but is harmonious. I really would not recommend my actions tonight re aeration as this really developed throughout the evening and upped its game by a couple of points. This needs a few hours in the decanter at this stage to fully come to life. Gloria is no longer a cheaper alternative, but this is more than worth its selling price. 92+

How’s that case of 2009 Potensac treating you, by the way? Have you come back to it since your first note on it back in April?

    Cheers!

7/22/2022 12:16:00 PM - Thanks for the assessment on the Gloria, David. Good to know. I know some vintages of Gloria can withstand the test of time, but I wanted your take on the trajectory of this one before buying.

In 2018, I had a 1989 Gloria from my father’s cellar, purchased on release by him, and it was still very much alive and enjoyable at the venerable age of 29. It was on the ethereal side, to be sure, but it was still a treat. I fret about the imperfect cellar conditions I have at home for my near-term drinkers sometimes, but then I remember that my dad’s cellar is passive (underground, damp enough, and coolish) and that all his wines are in great shape—still filled well into the neck (almost original looking), even the ones from the ‘70s. Then I stop fretting. I sometimes think that with the proliferation of professional storage facilities and home units, some wines are kept a little too well. The goal is for them to age, after all.

But I digress. Glad to hear the ‘09 Potensac is working out. Perhaps I should look into that one as well. I love Potensac. It’s an trusty standby for me, and I’ll need something to sip while I wait for my ‘15 and ‘16 Potensacs to mature a bit.

    Thanks again!
