HWS Bordeaux 2009 vs 2010 (By me): Dark berries, some herbs and beautiful oak in the bouquet. On the palate the same berries, juicy and more round acidity than in the 2010, same for the tannin, some minerals. Overall a beautiful and friendly wine which is in its young maturity stage and which will be even more elegant 3 – 5+ years from now.

This has burst into life in the last 6 months, and is superlative. For myself, Gloria consistently outdrinks many Growth estates, and deserves the recognition. The nose is wonderful, deeply aromatic, and on its own would warrant another point or two. That said, it still performs excellently on the palate and finish, but the latter is on the shorter side. The other heartening aspect of the bottle, is that it is acting as a marker for the 2009 vintage in general. The vintage has frustrated me to date, and beginning to despair if it will come round at a relatively early age, but this gives me real hope that the heavy hitters will be beginning to hit their drinking window in the near future.
Fourth of twelve from an OWC purchased at retail. This is on an upward swing, showing lots of softening but still primary blackberries and cassis and very ripe, dusty tannins. The whole thing had a very silky mouthfeel despite the medium-plus acidity. Excellent balance. I’m with Jane Anson on the score on this one. This is a great wine that is getting to be a lot of fun now. Next stop tertiary land. But not too fast. Let’s enjoy this phase for a bit. 13.5% ABV (great/****/17.5/95)

Ripe red fruits dominated, a little bit rusty in flavour, and recall me sociando mallet. This should be a good year but that little bit of rusty makes it less approachable imo.

Third bottle from an OWC of twelve purchased at auction. It’s been about eighteen months since my first of these and about fifteen months since my second. Both of those bottles came across as young, but this bottle had moved into its first maturity. Gone was all the baby fat of youth, leaving behind a softer, well-delineated form filled with very ripe cassis, blackberries, and black cherry. It also displayed dusty tannins and a little cedar and leather on the nose. There were no tertiary notes showing yet, but they should be along shortly. Drink at will. 13.5% ABV (very good/***/17/93)

Delicious wine! We had this for Christmas dinner with a filet roast and it was perfect. Opened the wine about 3 hrs ahead, it definitely needed air but we loosely cooked it to make sure it didn’t fade. It was really delicious by dinner and continued to be delicious for the evening.

From mag, popped and poured at our boat parade party.
I’ve had a lot of this wine over the years, and this bottle seemed the best of them all. Maybe I was influenced by a terrific party surrounded with great friends. But this had great fruit, tilting to red fruit. Silky smoothe, nice complexity., fine balance. Lingering, wonderful finish. Classic Bordeaux. Plenty of compliments from guests, so a crowd pleaser.

A 3 hour decant is about right. Settles down, opens up and shows it's true self.
Plum and damson fruit remain giving this a voluptuous quality. Within flow deeper channels showing forest and earth and body.
This wine has beautiful balance; the fruit is fulfilling and tertiary interest is developing. This is wonderful now and will improve over the next 5 years.

Wine was stored at room temperature for many years, so much of the fruitiness was gone. Otherwise, a good wine, considering the suboptimal cellaring environment, reached its peak about 90 minutes after decanting. Rated the bottle at about 90.

For me this was not over the hill but I don’t see it improving a lot either. More earthy / secondary flavors and less fruit profile. Good but I wouldn’t seek it out further

There must be a lot of suboptimal storage, or perhaps my source has a very cold cellar, because this is still a baby. Perfect cork, huge volume of primary fruit (mainly cassis and bramble), some caramel, but rather unresolved tannins. If I had a case, I'd forget for another five years.

Evolved. Spicy dried red fruits and prune, coconut shell and hint of cured meat on the nose, medium body and raspy and dried plum on the palate, some earth and cedar. Soft tannin, acid waning. Good but I’d say ready / past peak.

Lovely ruby color; umami nose. Nicely integrated flavor profile. The fruit has receded and it has been replaced by multiple notes of roast meat, forest floor, mushroom, and loam. I believe this one is at or slightly past its peak. I suggest that you drink ‘em if you’ve got ‘em. Well done.

The wine is spot on with PNP. Classic bordeaux with graphite, cedar, barnyard, sweet black cherry. The wine is uplifting and not dull. Parker rated this wine one of the best of 2009. I bought it at release around $35 a bottle. It took 14 years to prove Parker correct. I wouldn't give it 100 points to but definitely is pulling at least a 96 right now. I know there have been ratings at 91 and all over the place, but it seems as though this wine just needed time to come out.

From 37,5cl bought en primeur and never moved since, perfect cork; opened 1 hour, decanted another hour before serving. Smells more Médoc-like (blackcurrant, cedar, fresh, yum!) than it tastes (dark, rich, plush, sweet, blackberry, cloying, over-ripe, a hint of raisins at the end, more than a hint of good Grenache... indeed: almost Rhône-like). Blind, I might have guessed a high-quality South African Bdx blend at 4-5 years, with exceptionally well-managed tannins. Indeed, the fruit in this half-bottle is astonishingly primary, with the squeaky-sweet texture of a much younger wine. This wasn't a good choice to pair with steak and potatoes - it would have done better with duck confit, cassoulet or lamb stew. Perhaps better in 2030? Or just enjoyed as what it is, un vin absolument "parkerisée"? I broadly agree with Hiker4life70's TN of 09.04.2023, but think she was a bit severe in only giving 86P. 88-89P(?)

Popped and poured, and the flavor profile was dominated by mint and eucalyptus notes. After about 45 minutes of air, the wine began to smooth out and it softened considerably.

First bottle was about 2 years ago and was really closed even after a 2hr decant. Now in the spring of 2022 it is drinking beautifully with about 40 mins of air. Consistent with other notes. Tobacco, leather and dark summer fruits. Serious and starting to show tertiary notes but vibrant and fresh. In a really good place.

Uncorked at lunchtime, double decanted with 1 hour in the decanter. Was greeted with dark fruit, blackberries, plum, raspberry, smooth tannins, cigar box, leather, smokey flavours, potpourri, pencil shavings, a trully masculine wine, no overcooked/ripe/jammy flavours, contains a bit green flavours.

I thought I would like this more. The nose was very pretty. Graphite, flowers, black fruit. But on the palate, I was hit with Vicks 44 cherry cough syrup. This was improved with the lamb chops for Easter dinner but not by much. I found the pinot to be a much better pairing for the dinner

Last tasted a year ago, this has really developed over the 12 months. It still benefits from time in the decanter and it continued to develop in the glass. Red berry fruits show on the nose and palate underpinned with smoky and umami notes. The finish is decent, but on the shorter side. It is still in development, but is enjoyable now.

Pnp. This has “Bordeaux” written all over it. Although it doesn’t have the stuffing of a high classed Grand Cru, it definitely ticks all boxes on smell and taste and deliveres a satisfying drink. From an warm and generous vintage and having profited from a good decade of cellaring, this Gloria shines and is ready to share all it has to give. Still fruit driven with blackberries, brambles, leather and tobacco leafs it is just entering its phase where the secondary notes are beginning to show. Drank on its own but obviously very suitable to pair with red meat dishes. This will go on for a few more years ondoubtedly. Very good!

This opened with immediately accessible fruit but a reticent bouquet. After an hour in an opened bottle and 2 hours in a decanter, this came to life with a lovely bouquet of dark red fruits, spice, and some floral elements. The palate was right there with a nice balance of acidity and smooth but perceptible tannins. Clearly a St J that is hitting its stride. It’s mostly primary with some secondary nuances peaking out behind the full fruit. Drink now for early plateau pleasures or hold for a few more years if you’re more into a fully developed experience. Great QPR when I bought the case upon release.

My last bottle and got to it just in time! After an hour decant, the color is very youthful, and legs up the glass, but that belies what happens next. The nose is wet earth and cranberry and some gun powder as well (yup, I said that). The palate is definitely sweet mellow dark cranberry and some light chocolate syrup. The tannins are completely resolved and very, very soft sipping. This wine is very good but moving past its expiration date. Drink now!

Second bottle from a case bought at auction. Tasted after a mostly dead 1982 Gloria. With the much older wine clouding my palate, all I can say is that this bottle was very dark, very monolithic, and young. 13.5% ABV (No score)

Pronounced on the nose with blackcurrant, black plum, black cherry, mint, graphite, cedar, charred wood, cinnamon, earth, leather and tobacco. Developing.
Pronounced and dry on the palate. Medium plus acidity, medium plus tannins, high alcohol, full body, long finish.
Can drink now but has potential for aging or further aging. Surprisingly open after a one hour decant and got better and better with more air. From half bottle.

First of twelve from a case purchased at auction. Opened as a trailblazer for a 2004 Leoville Las Cases, and it cut an admirable path.
The Gloria was double decanted for sediment and served about a half hour after opening. This was just enough aeration to bring things together and start revealing the light tertiary notes it was developing; however, I think a solid hour in the decanter would probably have been better.
Every bit the equal of the Leoville Las Cases, this was a big, round wine, showing black over red fruits, dusty tannins, good acidity, and great balance. Like the LLC, this was probably in the first half of its middle-maturity plateau and was drinking beautifully. In truth, I ended up preferring this to the LLC by a small margin. Clearly, the 2009 vintage is a force to be reckoned with. 13.5% ABV (very good; above average; distinguished; compelling/***/16.5/93)
3 years since the last bottle, and this is now ready to go from first pour. Classic St Julien cassis/cedar nose. Ample charming, fleshy red/purple fruit, cassis, good coolness from stony minerals, pretty dried flowers, and just a bit of leather and horse. Medium acid and halfway-resolved tannins, leading to a long resonant finish. Slight let down in the mid-palate but otherwise delivers everything you want from a QPR stalwart in this vintage.

It’s been almost three years since tasting Gloria ‘09. Decanted for 2 hours and enjoyed over the following 2 hours. Early maturity, but three years have been generous to this wine. More secondary character than the last time I tasted it. Tannin and mouthfeel is round and plush (with air). This can age another 10+ years and it will get better, but with proper decant, it is really great.

Popped and poured, and should have decanted, but it is still an impressive debut. Definitely in its drinking window, and as with 2003 many wines from 2009 are approachable at a relatively early age. The nose is packed full of ripe berry fruits but underpinned with pervading smoky and umami notes. The palate is still primary but the tannin is smooth and some early secondary characteristics are appearing. Everything is perfectly balanced without any residual harshness in the mouth or on the finish. The latter is on the shorter side but is harmonious. I really would not recommend my actions tonight re aeration as this really developed throughout the evening and upped its game by a couple of points. This needs a few hours in the decanter at this stage to fully come to life. Gloria is no longer a cheaper alternative, but this is more than worth its selling price. 92+
Popped and poured. Luminous riuby color; smoky nose. The fruit is still present and fresh, lots of berry flavors, red fruit. Smoky back end,and loads of tannins. At least 10 good years lie ahead. Great QPR.

Not really feeling this. Nothing physically wrong but also nothing emotionally right. Rich color. Nose has some plummy fruit but is kind of monolithic. Palate follows the one note theme. Good body but lacking follow through. The finish is tight and a bit green. Hoping other bottles are better than this one as comments by others are much more favorable. Eh. (87)

Black centre, clear ruby rim. Full fruit nose, mouth filling, tannin heavy but fruit dominates. Vanilla and oak are there, but fruit keeps going. Years to go, but delicious now, so no regrets. Great value. Next day. Sealed overnight in a ‘Platypus’. Still drinking really well.

From 37,5cl, perfect cork, opened but not decanted 1 hour, continued to unfold and soften over subsequent hour in the glass. Nice cassis and super-ripe darker fruits on the nose; smooth, elegant entry with more blackcurrant; the mid-palate is all ripe blackberry fruit (huh? are we really in the Médoc?) and utterly delicious; shortish but clean finish. After a disappointingly inexpressive 2009 D'Angludet, this is the real deal, a friendly, ripe&rich 2009 Cru Bourgeois in still disjointed, slightly chunky, even over-muscular adolescence. Should be a joy to drink anytime now-2031 as it balances out, and slims down. 89-90P

Reserving the score, but this was good on day one after a one hour decant. We skipped day two, but on day three this was punching well above its weight. So much so, we'll be adding a few more bottles. Chateau Gloria eems to do well over-delivering what might be expected. We've never encountered a bad bottle in the several vintages we've tried. The 2009 on day three was drinking like a fine aged bordeaux with all the right notes. We had enough left for one glass each and followed with a 2018 Austin Hope. The Gloria made it taste like a dessert wine. If you are going to drink the Gloria now, decant and allow it time to become the wine it was meant to be. Otherwise, let it rest for a few years and find the QPR sweet spot. Day 1 - 90+. Day3 - 94.

My second look at this wine in the same number of months. If you are looking for quality booze, you've got it here. Nose is a little closed, but with some perfume; wonderful depth across the mid-palate, with great balance and longeuer. And beaucoup des fruites (and this is the best I can do with my schoolboy French).
The problem is: the 2009s are so approachable now, and hence we are drinking them too early. Or are we? They don't have the tannic backbone of the 2010's (and we will never, it seems, be drinking the 2008's).

Well, I opened it this year (in fact, this evening), because I am running out of quality booze.
Very bright dark fruit on the nose, a little subdued (but I am drinking this wine too young). As with all 2009s, there is good forward fruit, which makes them supremely approachable, but we are I think missing a lot if we drink them now.
Greetings from Australia. Look after yourselves.

Note is based on a tasting sip in the morning on day one and 0,1l filled in a bottle and sealed with argon gas drunk after 14 days. Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah No notes taken. Traditional, Cab driven Bordeaux, slowly starting to be an adult. Not overly complex or deep. Uncomplicated and joyful. Goes well with red meat. Potential for at least another decade. 90-91.

Well, quite honestly, I don't know what to make of this wine. It certainly grows in the glass as GPL89 points out (und guten Abend GPL89), but I'm not sure that it ever delivers the goods. There is a lot of forward fruit, but no real depth or complexity. The latter may come with time.
It is possible that I am reacting against the residual tannins in the wine.
I have one more bottle. I might open it next year.

Decanted for almost 3 hours. Aromas of blackberry, graphite, cherry, currant and lead pencil. Flavors of blackberry, plum, iron, currant and mineral. Ends with a 20 second finish with iron and blackberry notes. Very solid Bordeaux and very approachable now, which seems to be the case with most of these 2009’s.

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. Not showing much age.
Nice nose of blueberries, blackberries, black plums, cooked cherries, oak, licorice, spices, coffee, light vegetables, herbs, light vanilla, tobacco leaf, pencil lead, black pepper and light medicine.
Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, licorice, cloves, earth, light vegetables, pencil lead, coffee, dark chocolates and peppercorn.
Long finish with round tannins and coffee notes.
This is a nicely aged Bordeaux from the great 2009 vintage. Showing a great nose and mouthfeel.
Elegant with lots of fruits. Nicely balanced with nice complexity.
Needs a couple of hours to open up properly and show its pretty nose, so be patient. Tannins come in after 90 minutes.
Robert Parker 93 points.
Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 10 years.
Tasty and spicy. A delicious wine.
13.5% alcohol by volume.

Decanted for a brief spell. Plenty of life left in this. 12 years in, and no signs that it has turned the corner. Notes of bran muffin, rosewater, duck, black pepper, dark cherry, and briny cedar. I say drink now, while it’s in its prime.

Splash decanted. Dark red color. Very nice nose of dark fruit, but I get a lot of red fruit too. Medium + body, very nice mouthfeel. Palate of slightly sweet black cherries. Good clean, lingering finish, a touch of pleasing sweetness.
I’ve drunk a lot of this wine, including a case of 375 (this was 750). I think it is still evolving and improving, though very nice now.
Sitting by the fireplace, contemplating our tree and the challenges of 2020, but thinking, for all the heartbreak of this terrible year, life is good.

2009 starts to finally drink well, at least the small chateaux... lots of dark fruit, very concentrated, touch of leather, ink, feel it is about to change- develop mature characteristics but it‘s not yet there. Bold and powerful on the palate, cassis, good balance, not super elegant but has a strong backbone. Nice wine

Recent bottle much better than the past series. It now coming into its own. Still young (I like wines at or close to their peak). Thick fruit, full bodied, rich, very 2009, as said before it appears to make a big difference when I let it breath for a couple of hours. Still young a good number of years life left.

Purchased at winebid over a year ago. Cork in pristine shape, everything tells me that this is how a representative bottle should taste. Just popped this last night, and the very forward fruit was (choose a word) bigger, bolder, bangyer (a word I just invented) than I expected it to be, even though its a ripe 2009. Thus, I do agree that Butch is a proper name for the 2009, although it becomes less Butchy with air as I decanted it and started drinking it after about 45 minutes. I hope and expect with additional aging it will develop more diverse flavors. Label says 13.5% alcohol, and although I am don't find any heat, I wonder if it has a tad bit more alcohol than 13.5.
The owners of Chateau Gloria should change the name to Chateau Butch! This is heavy-duty St. Julien, Bordeaux from the massive 2009 vintage with bold colors of blood-red & navy-blue, dense flavors of sweet cassis fruit with campfire smoke, and resin with profound tannin. Impressive balance and a delightfully long finish. This wine should thrive & survive the next 2 decades with ease, and perhaps into the next ice age. Well done, Butch… I mean, Gloria!
Rich, deep ruby color. Huge floral came across on the nose in a big way with hints of cigar & leather and some blueberries, cherries and licorice. The French oak leaves no strong vanilla/sweet taste. Quite dry. Quintessential Bordeaux. Lots of sediment. No bricking. It took 2 hours to fully open up.

The wine is growing on me. Still a very dark impenetrable colour. The nose is quite one-dimensional, dominated by a dark fruit melange, but has a very sweet, perfumed quality. What's really striking is the wine's mouthfeel. Velvety and superbly rounded. There is only moderate acidity and tannin, but the wine seems to have found a spot of great balance, making me think (against my previous assessment) that there is still a decade of life left in it. However, I don't see it ever developing a higher degree of complexity. The wine is about plump fruit and 2009's luxurious mouthfeel - fair enough.

Although way ahead in bouquet compared to the Lynch Moussas 2005 (and nowhere near to the perfect Leoville Poyferre 1990 the same evening), after having had 8 bottles so far of this wine and another 44 in the cellar I am getting a little bit concerned: This is extremely dry, lacks fruit, and has virtually no aftertaste. I am not convinced this is going anywhere. I may be spoiled but see no joy in drinking this wine. Gloria has been 'glorified' by several critics. I hate to say I am on the sideline. Lets see whether this is still too young and closed down. I hope so!
Bottle was showing exceptionally well. Dark garnet, but a meniscus shows at the rim. Brambly nose, touch of heat. Dark fruit, espresso, green leaf tobacco that is more pronounced on the finish, as is a fine saline note. Some saddle leather at the end, as well as some fine tannins. On the big side, not the finesse side of things.

Drank the Gloria ‘09 and the Sammarco ‘09 in that order at Core restaurant in London. The Gloria was full of glorious black fruit and harmonious throughout, balancing power and finesse as so typical of the vintage. The Sammarco was more minerally with a touch of heat on an attenuated finish. The Sammarco may need more time but the Gloria certainly came out on top this evening.

Day 1: A bit muted at pour, and starts to open after half an hour. Smells like st Julien - blackcurrant, warm rock, and a hint of leather. On the palate, fleeting blackcurrant gives way to a flood of crunchy red crancherry fruit, blood orange, mouthwatering acid, powdery tannins. A hint of wood and perhaps needs another 5 years to be fully integrated, but is drinking quite nicely now. It comes across as classic but a bit sensual and elegant in texture, not modern but showing the vintage. 91
On day 2, it has shed some of its smooth richness, and is showing the terroir more transparently - blood orange, cranberry, chalky rocks. Why does this remind me of Morgon? Only the blackcurrant and leather on the back palate remind me this is Bordeaux. Decent amount of sediment so decanting is worthwhile. 93

Ten year CdP and Bordeaux retro tasting (with ringers). Hosted by Grinner.
Bordeaux Flight Three - Wine Three:
With the field narrowing, and knowing the house style's reputation for power and verve, knew this had to be the Gloria. It did not disappoint. It showed as one of the youngest wines of the tasting, and with the greatest further aging potential on account of its medium plus acid and medium tannin. It can rest for another decade and might improve.
A top three wine among the 2009 Bordeaux to this palate, likely 2nd overall, behind the Lilian Ladouys, and just ahead of the Prieuré-Lichine.

Wow. This wine really came around from 2017. The wine was open with sweet red and blue fruits. Lively through the finish. Huge nose. I was so surprised at how this wine came alive. Medium bodied and typical St. Julien softness throughout. I had a 2005 Lagrange, St. Julien, the other day that was chauky and boring. It seems that the 2009's are still sweeter and more expressive than the 2005's. Gloria is certainly not boring. I used the coravin so it will be interesting to see if my next glass is similar.
Nose of old casks, rubber, spices, and discreet red fruit...some floral notes as well. Nice smooth wine with a silky texture. Definitely ready (in my book) as the fruit may not last much longer. 90+

The nose on this was outstanding, really jumps out at you. Decanted and drank over 90 mins. Clear Bdx flavors, but not fruit heavy as i find with some '09s. Tannins are muted, makes me wonder if this was built for long haul, but really enjoyable now. Perfect wine for a Stanley Cup winner! (LGB!)
This is entering its adolescent phase, meaning it is not sure if it is still a child or trying too hard to be an adult. Bottom line is it is a bit awkward at the moment. Great fruit concentration, with a slight overextraction/prune on the finish. The nose needs coaxing in the glass, but after 1 hour in decanter it starts to unfold and open up. I will wait to drink my other bottles as I prefer more evolved Bordeaux.

Deep purple color. Nose of cassis and kirsch. The cassis and kirsch continue onto the palate along with emerging clove and tobacco with a streak of iron. This wine is still very primary with a pronounced acidity and tannic structure. It has at least another 10 years ahead of it. An excellent classic Bordeaux. Decant for sediment.
Dark ruby red, red rim, little sediment. Mellowing nicely. Smooth, fruity mouthful, full bodied then a bit of bite and grip. Lingering impression is of blackcurrant and wood shavings. Tannin is there but not obtrusive. Fruit dominant. Great with hard cheese. Very enjoyable.

We drank this alongside a Marquis de Terme 2009 and it was an interesting comparison. (I've copied this note to both wines)
I decanted the Gloria 3.5 hours ahead of drinking. Put it back in the bottle an hour later then back in a decanter at the restaurant. It was in a good place when we started to drink it: very well balanced fruit, acidity and mild smooth tannin. Excellent, quite fruity claret. But over the next 90 minutes the fruit did start to fade a little, so care is needed not to give this too much air.
The Marquis de Terme, on the other hand, I decanted 7 hours before we started to drink, put it back in the bottle at 2.5 hours ahead, then back in a decanter at the restaurant. And even with that much air it was still evolving in a positive direction when we started to drink, crossing over the Gloria so that 90 minutes later it was the Marquis de Terme with the better balance and fruit coming to the fore.
Both excellent wines, but an interesting case study in the effect of air and time.

I have to agree with the 3 tasting notes below, but this is not a bad wine for the money and it's drinkable now. First night, this wine was very approachable after a 1 hour decant. It had a good, medium body, mellow acidity, and soft tannins with a medium finish. If you intend to drink it in 1 night, then let it decant for an hour. Second night, sitting here with a glass and the nose is slightly floral, hint of menthol, and some oak. It swirls around in the mouth with dark fruits, cassis, cherry cola, and a finish of some very light cocoa followed by a little tartness lasting for 15 seconds or so. The wine continues to evolve in the glass it it's not bad at all! It does not strike me as a California wine at all, but a good, inexpensive Bordeaux that will accommodate an average weekend meal.

A decent Bordeaux for the money but nothing spectacular. 2009 seemed to be a vintage where everyone made an outstanding wine but this falls short. For 50 dollars a bottle a still prefer this many other wines in other regions.

This was one of the first wines I bought to lay down -- checking in almost six years later, guess what? It's evolving! This whole cellaring thing is working the way it should. Tannins softening? Check. Fruit easing up? Check! This is a terrific cab blend that wears its pedigree well, old world for sure in spite of how (wine critic word coming here) exuberant the 09 vintage was. It's dark but it's subtle and I wouldn't drink it with any boldly-spiced foods. Only needed about 30 minutes to open up. This will last a while.

Dark, dense fruit, but a light footed fruitiness from the 2009 vintage. Opened up nicely after an hour of bottle decant. Tannins soft but evident, just the right. degree of edginess. Not a wine offering an ethereal experience, but excellent food wine with good QPR.

Very Tanic. Clearly is young. First night aired two hours, not enough. Second day, better with better harmony and more complex flavors. Try again in 2 to 3 years.

This is in a sweet spot, right between youthful exuberance and developing secondary characteristics. Everything is in beautiful balance. Particularly like the bitter chocolate and nutty finish which is long and mouthwatering. Tannins are succulent. Great wine!

We've now drank over 60 bottles of this and just ordered another 6 cases. This is a crowd pleaser for such a great price. This will easily take down bottles $100+. Very very easy to drink. We love it.

Beautiful dark red rim, black centre, light sediment floating, rest removed. Nose mute but taste huge. Rich, stalky blackcurrant. Enough oak for grip, but the finish is fruit, with tannin on the teeth ! Immediately appealing, great finish. Benefitted from 2 hours open.

Still youthful with ample acidity and tannins for the long haul. Good fruit as expected from the vintage that also hints of the St Julian terrain. Nice wine no flaws.

I haven't opened a bottle of '09 Gloria since Jan 2013. Nose of leather, minerals, menthol, dust, and dark fruit. Medium bodied palate of blackberry, cassis, earth, and minerals. Excellent length. Refreshing acidity. Integrated oak. Sweet tannins. Drinking very well considering its youth. Lovely.

beautifully balanced wine, rich and round with great persistence. Clearly does not have the complexity of it's more famous neighbours, but this represents great value in an easy drinking style. Might improve a little in the short term, but there is certainly no hurry to drink this one. Recommended.

updating my 6/16 note. I was maybe a little harsh then. This is a good claret style. Light to medium body. No specific flavors emerge but a good balanced, drinkable wine. Again, nothing memorable but a well made effort, ready to go and great for the price

Dark fruits, earth, cedar, some green. Medium body with medium - acid and tannin. More dark berry with some chocolate, roasted coffee and minerality. Medium finish. A pleasant drink, and a decent value. I'd still decant this for an hour before enjoying

This wine will no doubt improve with age but very pleasant now. This has a nice subtle flavor profile, smooth, easy to drink. Great for hot weather. I purchased 2 cases. I have nothing bad to say about it. Its got some bad reviews but its a great bordeaux for a 2009 at $55. I love it. 92 may be light score.
This was initially around $30 a bottle and I bought 6. The wine was given a very high RP rating and I thought I would take a shot that the vineyard broke out in 2009. The wine is a typical medium bodied Bordeaux. However, the fruit is dry and the wine uninspiring. I do not believe it will get better, but for $30 it was a good buy.

Compared to a bottle one year ago (see previous TN) this one is markedly superior as it has the (quite) long finish you'd expect from a good St. Julien in a heralded vintage. Apart from that its aromatics were similar to before. Nevertheless the QPR seems questionable unless bought en primeur.

From .375, purchased on release and stored at 52 degrees. While not a great wine, this is well built and pleasurable. Slightly muted nose, moderately tannic but a nice mid palate of red fruit and earthiness. There is a touch of oak that is noticeable but not off-putting. Finish is a bit short but far from absent. I've read a few previous tasting notes that advise drinking this up soon. In my mind, either those folks haven't been drinking bordeaux long enough to understand how it ages, or got a poorly stored bottle. I'll drink my .375's over the next 5 years and enjoy the 750's for the 15 years after.

Dark ripe fruits, freshly ground coffee beans, licorice, milk chocolate, and some earth. Open and very generous, actually quite mild and on the verge of being too polished, but is just on the right side. Somewhat short and bitter finish. Good, but I don’t think this is for the long term. Better enjoy it now!

Great easy drinking Bordeaux. Drinking really well now, it probably has another decade or so. I don't think it will get much better though. Good green pepper (my nose easily picks that up for some reason), medium bodied and a medium finish. Nice drinking.

The birthday of a good friend; Mostly beautiful magnums (@ PZ): No formal notes. Drank from magnum. Beautiful and classical Bordeaux with ripe dark forest fruits, vanilla, cedar, some sweet licorice, beautiful acidity and ripe tannin. The great 2009 vintage made this wine to a success.

You can see the wonderful fruit in this wine, but it remains in something of a shell. Once again, I think the experts may have got it wrong on the 2009's, as they did for example on the 2003's - drink up, won't last. Mine are doing just fine. If this wine is the measure, drinking window in say 2019 as many suggest? Leave it just a few more years? If really well stored, I don't think so. Maybe 2025, if not later.. Accelerate with airing? Will help, but my view has long been that airing doesn't deliver the wine you will find if left to maturity. Particularly and clearly true to me with red burgundy.
I would add that while Parker - he the hedonist hugely extracted wine fan that he is - you can't make a gloppy enough CDP for him - rated this the best vintage of his lifetime. It wasn't unanimous by any means among wine reviewers, and I have to say I think Parker will lose this one.

Voluptuous fruit framing velvety tannins and a decent amount of new oak. I decanted and drank over 4 hours. It kept getting better. Like many 2009s I have tried, the ripeness of the fruit and the high glycerin make this delicous and approachable despite being primary right now.

Consistent with my note from 7/2013 with exception of gravel / coffee grinds more apparent on nose this time. 93+ . My wife loved this.
" Cedar, charcoal, cassis & blackberry on the nose. On palate, full body but silky mouthfeel. Similar flavor profile to nose with high acidity (ph low) sweet tannins and long finish." 93+/-

Still black, bright red rim. Huge nose, but quite alcoholic. Mouth filling, plenty of grip, tooth coating tannin, lovely blackcurrant middle then a finish of oak. Still got a bit of a way to go to fully blend. Components are delicious. Lovely aftertaste.

Tasted twice in a week, once at a work dinner and then at home over the weekend. This wine continues to impress me. Powerful and loaded with black fruits but smooth and light at the same time. There was a glass leftover in the carafe that I drank the next night. This time tasted more like a Napa Cab - no clue what that says about the wine but l love it.

Needs enough aeration (means at least one hour in the decanter) to fully evolve its flavours. But when done this wine combines typical flavours of aged bordeaux with substantial fruit and power. Can drink now or keep for another 5 to 10 years. Excellent.

Highly roasted, with great bordeaux statement in the nose. Its definitely soft and drinking at peak already. The tannins are right where they should be and as a matter of fact, not sufficient for long term aging in my humble opinyo! Enjoy all the roastyness and mocha that is woven within the sweet red fruit now! Cleary Bordeaux, and very St. Julien. Drink

From a 1/2 bottle. Perhaps my expectations were high, I found this to be very ho hum. I could not tell if it was just in a dumb phase or the wine lacked anything to be excited about. I also think it may not have the fruit and tannins to go the distance. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and not rate for now; however if I had to, it would be in the 88-89 range.

Is it just me or are the 2009 Bordeaux's wildly overrated? This wine is delicious right now with beautiful color, classic old world nose and wonderful earthy flavors. Then no finish. Two seconds after you swallowed it is like you drank a glass of water. No tannins or structure are detectable for a 7 year old Bordeaux! I can't see this lasting as long as it should. And this one is one of the better 2009s I have opened! I expect this vintage will be re-evaluated in the years to come...
Dark red, black centre, light sediment. Lovely ripe nose. Full and easy drinking, copes well with food. Strong blackcurrant finish. Plenty of potential to age, but great now.

In all honesty, this was a case a bought randomly, purely on region and year. Purchased at only 26,50 Euro / bottle, I have very little expectations for it.
But am I glad to report that I was very much wrong in my initial judgement. This wine turned out to be quite the enjoyment, from uncorking till last drop.
Being of young age, I uncorked in the morning before heading to work. In the evening, the bottle ( no decant ) was enjoyed for period of 6 Hrs.
Colour - very dark, hints of purple, very sticky in the glass, young Nose - oh so typical of St. Julien - stunning and very little to fault there Taste - already very round in mouth, packed with flavour, very peppery and spicy Finish - strong ... very strong, but also very well balanced running down
Strangely enough the nose reminded me of Ducru Beaucaillou, though taste and finish didn't follow same path. Still, I am thrilled to have four more bottles cellared, plenty to enjoy for the next ten years ( keep till 2025 IMO ). Not ready for pop and pour, slow O2'ing or decanting is required at this stage to fully enjoy its potential.
There you go, a real surprise P/Q to be found in the St. Julien appellation ! Thumps up and easily 91/100

On the second night, the wine had opened and had beautiful notes of blackberry, cassis, cedar, and tobacco. The first night, it seemed a bit more closed, with more black tea, cedar, and tobacco notes. That was P&P, so would suggest a decant if opening in the near future.

The Gloria 2009 does not live up to its hype, at least for me. While the wine shows a nice purple color and good viscosity in the glass, nicely rounded sweet fruit, a good dose of extract while retaining a medium body, sufficient freshness and some very fine-grained, caressing tannins, it does finish rather short and lacks the structure to guarantee more than 5-7 years of aging.

Second time tasted, with consistant notes and consistant deception. Nose quite closed of an average bordeaux village. Dark hue; Mouth soft, small structure, lacking tannins and nobility. Diluted. Short lenght. No details of the vintage. No personnality for this prestigious appellation.

Nose: Dark berries, a hint of spice. Mouth: Consistent with the nose. Very good Bordeaux but disappointing considering the name and price tag. It lacks complexity and depth and is all in all not very interesting. The finish is a bit too watery. Also a bit too bitter. The alcohol is a bit too pronounced even though it has "only" 13.5%. It won't improve. Drink now or in the next couple of years.
It was a little tight on opening, but it opened up nicely after about 30 minutes. The wine is medium density, and medium plus acidity. There was dark fruits up front, and it finished a little earthy. I still have one remaining, an I would buy more if I could find it. It is a very good value.

Tasted blind against a Pauillac to determine whether the commune terroir shows through. Very deep, cassis and cigar box / lead pencils on the nose, surprisingly rich on the palate with blackcurrant, tobacco and spices. tannins soft and easy to drink. Good balance and showed better than the Pauillac that was more backward. I think the terroir did show! WoFW 16.5/20

I am clearly more positive about this wine than others. I find it surprising that some people think it lacks fruit. Yes it is young but the fruit and structure scream out. It is drinking very well now but I suspect is at least five years off its peak.

This is a classy wine. Decanted for 3 hrs. Beautiful deep purplish color, great viscosity. Nose is leather, dark, elegant. Wine is very full bodied on the palate, lots of structure, round. Dark cherry fruit. Nice finish. Went very well with steak. Quite a bit of sediment in the glass.
I'm sure this wine can develop a lot more, but it's very drinkable at the moment, in my opinion. Much much prefer this 2009 vintage over the 2011 I had a month ago. Would love to try the 2010. 91-92 pts.

PnP and drank over the following 2hrs. Classic and attractive on the nose with blackcurrants, vanilla and cedar immediately apparent once the wine was poured. Good weight and concentration on the palate but this does not quite have the early approachability of some of its peers from this vintage. Still rather closed with those mouth coating tannins at the forefront of things. Medium plus finish with a touch of bitterness at the end. This wine probably needs another 5 years to reach its potential and will last well beyond that.

Opulent, powerful and silky. Amazing viscosity. Notes of red fruit, meat and chocolate. Still a bit primary and may not develop into a hugely complex wine but a gorgeous mouthful of claret. Drank with pheasant and cheese. Should improve for a decade at least.

Seems to be shut down completely. Unyielding in every respect. No discernible bouquet, flat front and mid palate and very little finish to speak of. Given the solid recent reviews I was expecting more at this point. Now let's be clear, I am a hack at best at identifying great structure but I couldn't get a bead on this at all. And all others who tasted agreed.
Will wait a couple more years to be fair. Hopeful but not excited.
Chocolate, vanilla, and cassis on the nose. Palate is similar. Low acidity and soft tannins. Finish is rather short. Wine is quite closed at the moment but is still approachable. Another year or so should benefit more.

The 2009 is clearly Chateau Gloria's greatest effort to date. It is a powerful, muscular wine that boasts a deep, thick ruby colour and diffuses intense perfumes of raspberries, blueberries, vanilla and led pencil shavings. Although it isn't one this beauty undoubtedly behaves like a Grand Cru Classe with its fleshy, tannic and unctuous texture as it mesmerizes the palate with an overload of dark fruit, cinnamon and white chocolate, and lingers on with a delightfully silky 45 second finish. A remarkable success and truly outstanding value. This infant will benefit from another year or two of cellaring before reaching its maturity plateau, where it should cruise comfortably for two decades.
In my experience going back to 1966, every great Bordeaux vintage ages in ways you don't quite anticipate. I wouldn't say this wine is closed, I would say it is an ungenerous phase. Splitting hairs of course. Neither the acid nor the tannin seem to be particularly pronounced. Much more impressive a few years ago.
Perhaps a message here. The 1982's always drank well - Pichon Lalande comes to mind. Just may not be the case with 2009 , a vintage often compared to some extent to 1982.

Extracted with a Coravin. Deep, dense crimson appearance. The nose is meaty, peppery, and filled with umami elements of black fruit, cassis, beef, toasty oak, and popcorn. Full bodied, clean, and polished, with a youthful personality, fine length, and outstanding focus. The tannin creeps up on the long finish. This has tremendous potential. Decant or lay down for a couple of years. Outstanding. 93++

From a .375. Powerful dark, brooding nose dominated by "roasted" (but not oaky) notes and curiously, loads of lead pencil. Really captivating nose and very primary dark fruit (no puppy fat opulence so typical of young wines of the vintage, but then again, this is no longer "young"), not an elegant wine but well balanced. Really came together in the glass over the next hour or so without deteriorating (despite my vigorous swirling) in quality, this appears to have a long future ahead.

Even amongst the 'Domaines Martin' taste seems to vary a bit (barrel to barrel possibly). The first bottle I had was amazing… would give it a 96 or 97… however the next bottle purchased a month later is nice but only an 88 or slightly lower. If you look at people's notes this seems to be the status quo. When you get a great bottle it is everything mentioned in the positive notes… fruity, balanced and delicious.

Bordeaux Tasting (Private Residence (Miami, FL)): Full body and vivid dark color. Bouquet is more evolved than the '10 with red and black fruits, camphor, leather, and a sprinkle of peppery spices. Palate has intense red fruits, sticky tannins, big dose of oak, with a minerality that carries through a medium finish accompanied by gentle fruit. This is a very good showing and a wine well balanced between structure and pleasure. 92-94

Opaque, dark purple gem. Aromatics of blue/dark fruits, menthol, herbs, coffee, and hints of caramel and lavender, no scent of over ripeness. Good mouthfeel, balanced, juicy, with notes of black cherry, cigar pipe, minerality and fresh mint leaf on the palate. Round, sweet tannins, with medium finish filled with tobacco smoke, anise and plum juice. Still carry some bit of austerity, slight bitterness note at the backend, but not too much. Alcohol scent can certainly use some more bottle time to soften. Overall, a delicious wine, seems like it's shutting down though, but will open up to be a good one in the future.

Very nice. While young and with sufficient structure and substance for at least 10-15 more years, this nevertheless drinks well now with some time in the decanter.
Toasted oak, blackberries, coffee/mocha dominate at the moment. Refreshing acidity and present, but fairly smooth tannins complete the package.
Hard to beat Gloria on value for money in 2009. Warmly recommended.

After a short time in the decanter, the nose of this very dark, violet, almost black wine is really impressive. Lots of red and black fruit, liquorice, dark chocolate, herbs, mint, wood, tobacco. Very powerful and captivating. On the palate ripe, luscious fruit, not too tannic, but really quite bitter and a bit disjointed at the moment. Lingering finish. It should improve with more time in the bottle, planning to open another bottle in 3-5 years. 90+

We have tasted a number of 09 Bordeaux's and this one was OK, nothing special. Maybe we had a bad hair day but the tannins overwhelmed and balance as off. Gave it a chance over a 3 hour period, but not much development; Maybe WA score is over the top or maybe we like cheaper Bordeaux's.

one hour decant...deep violet color...vibrant ripe blackberries dominate nose with underlying notes of soppressata and faint traces of mocha, cigar box and herbs - highly delineated and complex...succulent and juicy fruits on the mid-palate with nicely balanced acidity and young vibrant tannins but surprisingly one dimensional given intoxicating nose...perhaps age will add some complexity to palate...that said, this is an excellent wine from an excellent vintage, proving that it's better to load up on select vintages from high quality producers than blindly pursue vertical buying habits

Terrific wine. Very intense expresso dominated, but there was fruit and a melange of spices behind it. Tannins were there but did not overpower the wine at all. Nice mouthfeel, and remarkably refined for a wine so young.

Inky purple in the glass. Young and primary, but wide-open and fun right now. The tastes are very black cherry, with minerally and a little char. Bright acids (suprisingly high for such a ripe vintage) and a medium bodied with good concentration. The tannins are ample, but very soft and tar-like. Pretty classic yet expressive St. Julien.

deep ruby color with aromas of spicy black fruit. Black current, berries, licorice, pepper and oak. On the palate, the wine has Med+/high tannins, medium acidity and age will most likely soften the tannins. This wine is a bit young to drink now.

Much as I like the Fleur Cardinale, this crushed it like a grape. Had it with a grass-fed prime rib and porcini mushrooms and *that* was a rewarding experience.

Distinct deep smell with initial hints of alcohol. Lighter body then a deep napa cab but deep purple color emulating heavy body. Great smooth linger and finish . Great value

Received a case this week via UPS. Popped a bottle to ensure no damage in shipping. Dark garnet with purple tint. Delightful nose of blackberry, plum, cedar, leather, and a little tar. Somewhat closed, tight palate of blackberry, graphite, minerals, and leather. Excellent length. Strong note of salinity. Pleasant acidity. Toasty oak. Tight, grippy tannins (no surprise). Seems like these bottles survived shipping in frigid temperatures. Addendum: by day two the tannins were predictably faded and the fruit more prominent, predicting an outstanding wine with 4+ years of cellaring (my '05 Gloria are really just starting to hit their stride).

Expressive nose. Clean, intense, and perfumed. Notes of blackberry, dark cherry, forest floor, tobacco with hints of oak at finish. Sweet and sour tannins still noticeable with slightly dry mid palate. Not exceptional long finish with very slight heat at the end. Label indicated 13.5% alcohol. Low acidity level. Very good balance overall. Quite impressive. Tannins soften 24 hrs later, still maintains very good balance but this is not a "big" wine, medium finish. At the moment, it is better on the nose than on the palate.92-94 pts.

Took about 30 minutes to open up, could have had some more time to fully breathe. Tannic, but slowed after awhile, tastes of cherry and blackberry, full-bodied. Was a fan of this one, although a bit expensive for what came of it.

An odd showing for a young bdx. Heavy toasted oak on the nose. Palate is lush and fat, with loads of currants and plummy fruit character. Some fine firm tannins in the background, but actually seems to soften with air. Comes across as rather low in acidity and almost Cali like, but more likely it's just showing it's merlot component. Moderate finish, with oak and dark fruit and coffee flavors not yet integrated. Not sure about this one. There's certainly loads of fruit but doesn't seem to have the polish and definition of the '05.

PHMG WAG: The '09 Bordeaux (Chateau Lyon): My WOTN and a bit of a surprise. Gloria did something similar in a big tasting of '96's done in 2006. Over achieved again. Blackberry, cassis, stone/ minerals, cigar box all on a glycerin laden texture. Even the tannins seemed a little sweet, but deep. Still VERY good the next day w/o gas.

CdBaH Spring Mini: Is it good? Yes. Is it great? I don't think so. I looked forward to drinking this wine more than any other given the attention it received from the critics. Parker's tasting notes are quite accurate: "Sumptuous, plump style", "viscous texture, and loads of tannin, extract, and richness". All true. But I do not agree with Neal Martin's notes about this wine's "purity" and "immense clarity and precision". My opinion is that this is a Bordeaux version of a well-made but inexpensive Napa Cab. Think BV Rutherford. Good, but unmemorable. I think this wine is all over the place. Sweet and velvety tannin coat the mouth with rich fruit flavors, but it lacks focus and precision. Almost fat. I could definitely discern the low acidity. I didn't find any sense of place in this wine. My opinion is that one could do much better for $50 in this vintage.

This wine continues to improve and impress. A very dark ruby red wine. Fragrant aromas of black fruits, cassis, flint, perfume, and soft minerals. This wine is a true St. Julian. A full bodied wine with a good palate that will improve with time. There is loads of fruit, the alcohol slides by unnoticed, and the tannins are the stand out feature. The finish is very long, but not quite elegant (yet). This the best vintage of Ch. Gloria I have ever tasted. Serve this wine to your friends and turn them into francophiles. 2015-2030 93 points.

Medium.full bodied with fresh blackberry, chocolate and cherry scents, this supple textured, ripe, sweet wine will compete with many classified growths in a blind tasting. At just under $40, this blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot is a Bordeaux wine worth buying.

A lot of coffee on the nose, relying a bit on the oak here, but ripe fruits, very appealing wine, given the price level, this is fine. On the palate, decent concentration, middle-of-the road ripeness for the vintage, with some dark notes to anchor the wine. Good for what it is. 92-93

Union des Grands Grus 2009 Bordeaux Tasting (Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles): A bit restrained on the nose, displaying coffee, toasted oak, asphalt, and mint. More body comes through on the palate, showing a hefty amount of spice, red cherry, black plum, smokey oak, coffee, and tart red currants. Dusty tannins, with a medium finish ending with notes of red currants and coffee. Good.

Medium ruby appearence.
Evolved and pronounced nose of black fruits (blackberry, blue berry), cassis and some nice spice and vanilla notes.
Medium to medium plus in body with plenty of structure remaining at age 14 plus.
Drink now, but this style seems to last for ages in a cold cellar. Not sure it will improve though.....

Plum and damson fruit remain giving this a voluptuous quality. Within flow deeper channels showing forest and earth and body.

Drink now!

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
No notes taken.

Decanted for a brief spell. Plenty of life left in this. 12 years in, and no signs that it has turned the corner. Notes of bran muffin, rosewater, duck, black pepper, dark cherry, and briny cedar. I say drink now, while it’s in its prime.

I’ve drunk a lot of this wine, including a case of 375 (this was 750). I think it is still evolving and improving, though very nice now.

Nice wine

Deep ruby appearance. No real lightening after 9+ years in the bottle.
Pronounced and evolved nose of black fruits, cassis, tobacco and sweet vanilla. Very impressive.
Medium plus body with medium acidity and beautiful and integrated tannins. Very concentrated and structured for this cuvee.
Lots of similar flavor characteristics on the palate with a long and delicious finish. This is a good example of a "lesser" wine in a great vintage.
Drink now or hold for another decade in a cold cellar.

Lovely.

Colour - very dark, hints of purple, very sticky in the glass, young
Nose - oh so typical of St. Julien - stunning and very little to fault there
Taste - already very round in mouth, packed with flavour, very peppery and spicy
Finish - strong ... very strong, but also very well balanced running down
Strangely enough the nose reminded me of Ducru Beaucaillou, though taste and finish didn't follow same path.
Mathijs

The Gloria 2009 does not live up to its hype, at least for me.
While the wine shows a nice purple color and good viscosity in the glass, nicely rounded sweet fruit, a good dose of extract while retaining a medium body, sufficient freshness and some very fine-grained, caressing tannins, it does finish rather short and lacks the structure to guarantee more than 5-7 years of aging.

It lacks complexity and depth and is all in all not very interesting. The finish is a bit too watery. Also a bit too bitter. The alcohol is a bit too pronounced even though it has "only" 13.5%.

Has softened up since the last bottle. Balanced tannins and round mouthfeel. Underripe plum and black fruits with a hint of cigar box. Good QPR, not sure how much more this will improve.

Opulent and deep nose of dark fruit and cedar notes.
Elegant wine with a lovely balance with ripe silky tannins and a touch of earth and a rather pleasant bitterness.
Drinkable already but will no doubt improve a lot. Really a nice positive surprise.

Julien.
