2019 Château Haut-Bailly

Community Tasting Note

95 Points

Thursday, June 30, 2022 - At Sotheby’s UGC 2019 vintage tasting at Cipriani NYC Midtown. Out of the 50+ wines I sampled this was WOTN. Immediately stood out with its aromatic nose, immense, brooding structure, loads of concentrated dark berries, encased in a velvety mouthfeel. 30-45 second finish. Tremendous young and has the stuff to go 2 decades here. Buyer.

6/30/2022 8:46:00 PM - Agree with you. At the UGC tasting in SF, Haut Bailly was clearly in top 3 if not the WOTN. A beautiful wine with a great future.

7/1/2022 6:54:00 AM - A great investment indeed (I picked up mostly Pauillacs at en primeur mid-COVID, Lafite for $425 etc. so missed this one but will look to buy bargains). Any experience with past highlight vintages like 2005? Worth buying at auction?

7/1/2022 11:01:00 AM - I started to dip into higher level 2005s the last couple of years with wines that I bought in half bottles. Dom Chevalier, Duhart-Milon, and Pontet Canet all showed great potential but clearly not ready for prime drinking. 2005 is a great vintage and requires plenty of patience. As I'm sure you know, prices are consistently steep. If you didn't get a stock of the 2016s, I think the quality is broader and it's easier to find value.

I have purchased bottles at auction and provenance is always a concern. Being on the west coast, I've used K&L and WineBid and have found K&L auctions to be more reliable. Hope this helps you find some nice wine!

7/1/2022 10:59:00 PM - great comments. I found this one to be a wall of tannin, but admittedly I tasted it towards the end of the night so palate fatigue can be blamed. I started out on PLL and came back to it an hour later, both times it and the Canon were my top wines.

7/9/2022 7:54:00 AM - PLL was definitely another standout and clearly above Baron which was more diluted. Lynch-Bages was still the top Pauillac of the tasting for me though!
