Sunday, March 20, 2011 - 30 minutes into opening the 2004 Lafon Rochet casts aromas of licorice, clay soil, very dark red fruits, spices such as cinnamon and cayenne, lamb fat, a slightly leafy aroma, and is backward meaning not at all fruit forward. The color reflects the vintage; light ruby. With a medium to full body, the wine glides over the palate with fine tannins and high acid. This is indeed a food wine. While it is not the most impressive wine I've had the pleasure to smell and taste I must say that the Lafon is very well made as the oak is at once present and evasive lurking somewhere deep in the background under the aromas of soil and glycerin. This Rochet has enough filling to drink nicely into 2018 but everything is so nicely balanced and the fruit so subtle that I will be drinking my final bottle in the next three years.
