2004 Horizontal Dinner (Tunglok Peking Duck Novena): Medium deep garnet with purple hue, and slight browning on edges. Somewhat muted nose with a bit of pepper, greens, and barnyard, then some minthly greens, while the fruits are struggling to emerge. Similar peppery barnyardy funk on the palate with chewy tannins and fresh acids, and some brine, minerals, dried grass, and underripe black cherry. It is lengthy, but much of the finish is spiced. May perhaps be better in a few years but I'm honestly not sure

Brought this to a wine dinner at East Treasure with my wine mates. Theme of the evening: Wines from regions which start with the letter "B". Decanted for 60 mins prior to consumption.
Classic Bordeaux, with notes of red fruits, wild mushrooms, aged leather, chewy tannins and a touch of cigar. In between the primary and secondary stages at the moment; the fruits are still evident though fading, with the secondary notes arriving though still distant.
Suggest to hold on to this bottle for a few more years before consuming.

This pours medium ruby with light bricking at the rim. The nose is moderately expressive showing charred wood, old furniture, dark cherry, black currant, and light touches of leather and moss. The palate hits up front with quite notable medium plus tannin that is somewhat astringent and seemingly wood derived, but with medium acid and some redeeming lush black currant and dark cherry notes. All in all this is a nice bottle of Bordeaux drinking well now, though I do wish it was hit with a little less prominent new oak. The oak is most notable on the texture of the palate and not terribly so on the palate. Perhaps just a little more age will resolve the palate further.

Much more convincing than I recalled from previous bottles. Really a lovely 2004 now. No hollowness and while mature, it was by no means formless as I'd feared.

Dark brown with brick rim. Aroma of barnyard, juicy raspberry, thyme, leather, anise and cedar. Palate entry of watery spicy pepper. Mid-palate of oaky juicy blueberry. Earthy, cedary, licorice and leather finish. Thin, spicy, with too much oak, might be over the hill.

Mature yes, but still drinking very nicely. Beautiful rounded, fine tanins. Full of dark fruit. Last bottle, so took the risc and used Coravin. Lets see later this year, how that works out on a fully developed wine.

Drinking very well right now and probably for a few more years. Some nice secondary notes coming through with the bottle age. Tannins are all rounded and settled, fruit has softened but has life and the wine has excellent balance, overall. This is well done and in a very good spot.

Intense nose with leather, forest floor and underlaying dark fruit, superb, on the palate still fresh with a good structure and some edges, long finish, very classical. At its peak now but will easily hold for additional 4 to 6 years.

Probably just a more mature bottle than the last one, but this is just starting to show signs of fatigue. Lovely elegant flavours of cassis and spices as usual, but just edging now towards tartness. It should be fine for another two years but it hasn't got the structure for longer and I see no reason for any further improvement.

Well, mine are still on form. As it ages, so it becomes more elegant, which I agree was never the case of LR in the past, but I'm not complaining. I admire the red and dark cherry, the blackberry and the overall balance of the wine, it's certainly at peal now, but it should remain there for another few years.

Dark purple brown. Nose of anise, clove, cola, mushroom, leather and oak. At palate entry, obvious tannin, juicy trape, grape skin and plum. Bitter, leathery and thin at mid palate. Short finish of pepper, licorice, lime, plum with hint of oak. Light bodied, but mouth puckering tannin and high acid, very unbalanced wine, don't think it will get any better.
My last bottle of this. Took a while to open up (two or three hours). Blackcurrant and cedar smells, quite woody, not a hugely intense smell but sweet black fruits. Very good weight and texture in the mouth, neither too concentrated nor too light. More dark fruit and wood, and some tobacco. Tannins, acid and fruit all in good balance. Long savoury finish. Excellent.

Still improving, much to my surprise, this is much better than many other 2004s and better, to my great surprise, than the 2003. Still plenty of dark cherry and cassis, with a sheen and a vibrancy that helped it do well in comparison to the Léoville-Barton 2001 tasted alongside it. Not quite top notch, but not far off.

Decanted 30 minutes before dinner, not long enough but got better in the glass. Improved within the last two years (especially on the palate) and it's more focussed (better integrated) now. On the nose black berries and first tertiary notes in the background, on the palate good acidity, medium bodied, long finish. Very good food wine, elegant and classical (would guess Margaux rather than Saint Estèphe), very good now but will last for many more years (up to 2028).

Chocolate, cassis and some leather or earthy smells. Quite dry in the mouth with substantial tannin and subdued fruit. A touch of eucalyptus is also present. Medium bodied with a serious savoury finish. Currently drinking well, I feel that with more time it would lose more than it gained. Good wine.

A bit rustic in style with the not very ripe fruit and chunky tannins, but a very firm wine with some spicy oak and nice character. Some other tasting notes here describe it very well. Nicely developed yet not tired at all. Probably will last 5 years or more easily, but may not get more interesting. 89-90 points. Very happy with this for the €20 I paid back then.

Ready now, might improve a little but will definitively stay in that state for at least 5-6 years. Subttle on the nose, some leather, cassis. Lingering mouthfeel, tanins quite present still, quite long, veary pleasant. 91+

Best showing so far - the fruit is at last emerging from the background. Both bottles were vibrant and focused, with the usual Lafon chunkiness providing the background for some attractive notes of dark cherry and cassis. It's odd - the last time I tried this with the 01, the latter won easily, but this time, the 04 was superior.

Of mikil sýra og tannín.

Yeast, leather, spices and then blackcurrant on the nose, with at first quite a stern impression in the mouth. It needs several hours to really open up: on the plus side, a very impressive velvety middle section, luxuriant and sleek, with a decent finish; on the down side, a greenness to the fruit, which is difficult in any case to identify. With an effort, one can get the cherry and blackcurrant in the middle section, but this is a wine that is impressive in spite of the fruit rather than because of it. Compared to the Lafons of the past, this is really rather good, in that the rather clumsy tannins have been replaced by the sleek, modern middle section, so in a better vintage, worth seeking out; but not really this one.

Decanted for a half an hour. Very nice nose, mature, warm, forest floor and a bit leather. On the palate smooth tannins, not very concentrated but very approachable with food, medium length. Drink now or during the next six years. 90 points (a bit more for the nose, a bit less for the palate).

Not unpleasant, but quite disapointing though. It lacks maturity, balance and complexity. Nothing vibrant in that wine, although I have overall been very pleased by 2004 Bordeaux which are drinking beautifully.

Decanted and drank after an hour or so. Deep garnet colour with cassis aromas. Quite classic, nicely balanced with tannins integrated. The flavours are fruit driven and given its age it was lacking in secondary flavours. It also finished a bit short. Overall a competent bottle but at the price and the cellar time, i would expect more...

Much like the last one, a decent bottle with good notes of cherry and blackcurrant, but lacking in depth and persistence. Just doesn't quite have that wow factor and I can't see how it could acquire it in the future, but it will provide good, solid drinking for several more years, probably at its best in another two.

Needs to be decanted to settle down and blow off some green characters. With time some richer, secondary flavours emerge- not expansive but still adding some necessary depth to the wine. Enjoyable in the context of the specific winery/location but still somewhat of an underperformer in the 'big league' of Paulliac producers.

Quite austere at first but opens up very nicely after an hour. Feels pretty serious, composed. There is a green tone that is a bit unwelcome but this is nice for the vintage and drinking well now.

Cigar box, earth at first, then blackberry and cherry aromas. Good, bright attack of red cherry and cassis, very moreish and enticing. The middle section is a little lightweight and the finish is fair, obviously no match for the 03, but this is very enjoyable and excellent value.

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Rich nose showing bright black cherries, plenty of spice, and a touch of fresh mint. More black cherries on the palate, along with some tart red currants, mint and clove spice. A bit soft but drinking well already. It wasn't fair to serve this along side the Pichon Lalande and Ducru as this was enjoyable but clearly overshadowed by the other wines in the flight. Good+

No sign of age in terms of colour, very dark still. Lovely nose, sweet dark fruit, cherries, forest notes, cigar box, sweet spices. Lots of energy on the palate, spicy, rich fruit, firm tannins, but not unpleasant, medium length. A classic, not overly elegant wine, but very nice. Should be more accessible in 3-5 years. 90-91.

Color: Bright garnet with purple opaque rim. Nose: licorice, black cherry, basil, slight toasted oak. Palate entry: Astringent tannin, acidic, fruity. Mid-Palate: oaky, ginger, cherry bubble gum. Finish: Alcohol, smoky, dried cherry. Very fruity wine with tannic entry, still need a few years to develope.

Powerful St Estephe nose, masculine, iron and liquorice, dark fruits. Lacking depth and structure on mid palate and a bit light on the finish but this is fine, classic Bordeaux. Not trying to be anything else. 2004s are drinking nicely now. Won't improve from here. Would be good with braised beef. Nose 90, palate/finish 84.

Deep ruby in color, there is good intensity on the nose, showing good complexity of blackcurrant, blackberry, savory, sweet tobacco, smoke, cedar, liquorice, chocolate and cinnamon notes. The tannin however is a bit too grippy, the palate shows a bit more herbaceous which was not as apparent on the nose. The finish is of reasonable length.

Bordeaux 2004 (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): This wine is completely locked in both the bouquet as on the palate. Dark fruits alright, but for the rest a lot of sticky tannin and bitterness. If I would have any I would wait at least until 2018 before trying again. There is potential. I did not score the wine.

Bordeaux 2004 - an overview (Restaurant Bottles, Sas van Gent): Stinky, awkward nose. Animal, outdoorsy odours, compost. Some black fruit in the back. Rustic wine, lots of potential. I really do hope that the fruit outlasts the tannines when this wine ripens for 2-3 years in the cellar. 90/100 (group scores: 88-94)

This has come on leaps and bounds in the last year. The fruit is now much more apparent, with a particularly intense seam of blackcurrant in mid-palate and a fine, long finish. Far better than some LRs in the not so distant past, there is practically no more of the rusticity that used to characterize this estate.

I have to agree with the note below: something is missing indeed. The nose is quite beautiful and doesn't really fall all that short of what you expect of an 8 year old bordeaux. But the taste on the palate does not follow the nose. Strong tannins and only medium body with not so subtle acidity. A little disappointing.

This wine is like meeting and getting to know one of those good people who are very agreeable and have no flaws, but there is something missing from the equation. There is no personality or depth. It is technically a good wine, and while I'd be happy to drink it at someone else's party, I wouldn't purchase this again for the price I paid. A nice nose, but the the whole affair is very reserved for my palate. It gets better if you give it time to breathe, but it still underwhelms.

Medium garnet color. Nose which shouts of left bank Bordeaux redolent with cassis fruit, smoky oak, cedar and some barnyard. Medium bodied balanced and easy drinking - for me ready to drink although can keep. We had this wine together with a super Tuscan Perlato di Bosco and a super Naoussa Gi kai Ouranos and somehow got less attention than it deserved but it is a really good and expressive Bordeaux.

Medium + ruby with an expressive nose of eucalyptus & cedar around a core of blackcurrants. Well integrated oak. Elegant and medium bodied on palate with solid slightly unripe/fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity that lead to a long mid-palate. Ready to drink now, will improve over the next decade.

Drank one of a friend's bottles - not yet cracked my case. Opened three hours before, and decanted. Actually ready - better than the 2000 we also tried that night (which needs more time). Hint of cinnamon, tobacco, blackcurrant, with a medium finish and nice mouth "feel." Good wine for not a great year.

Popped and poured. Dark ruby-garnet. Expressive nose with cedar, red and black berries, subtle oak, liquorice, cassis. Hints of pencil shavings. Medium+ body, round, with very soft tannins, nice fruit and high acidity. Medium to long aftertaste. A very enjoyable, typical left bank Bordeaux (although Merlot percentage is 40%, quite high for a left-banker), ready to drink now, with a good cellaring potential. Great with a tenderloin steak.

Excellent !

30 minutes into opening the 2004 Lafon Rochet casts aromas of licorice, clay soil, very dark red fruits, spices such as cinnamon and cayenne, lamb fat, a slightly leafy aroma, and is backward meaning not at all fruit forward. The color reflects the vintage; light ruby. With a medium to full body, the wine glides over the palate with fine tannins and high acid. This is indeed a food wine. While it is not the most impressive wine I've had the pleasure to smell and taste I must say that the Lafon is very well made as the oak is at once present and evasive lurking somewhere deep in the background under the aromas of soil and glycerin. This Rochet has enough filling to drink nicely into 2018 but everything is so nicely balanced and the fruit so subtle that I will be drinking my final bottle in the next three years.

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, St. Estephe (Rodwell House): A thick black to blood red colour. Fairly reticent on the nose with some black fruit, leather, vanilla and spice. Still youthful, the entry is fresh with a lively acidity, ripe black fruits and firm tannins. There is a savoury element of marmite, cedar and cold clay along with blackcurrant even a shade of blackcurrant leaf, herb or stalks. It feels firmer than expected lacking some flesh to soften the mid-palate and overall, the wine feels chunky. Medium length. It got chewier.

Aerated and decanted for 3 hours before serving. Not much nose, some vegital herbaceous notes. More of the same on the palate with very fine tannins. I think the fruit is hidden and that this should not have been opened for another 3-5 years.

Very young so a bit closed. The nose shows a little blackberry and some earth notes along with a touch of pencil lead. Palate is tight with some leathery tannins and minerality. Fruit is hidden but finish shows some promise. I'll try it again tomorrow after vacuum pump overnight. EDIT - The palate and nose both opened considerably after one day. Richer fruit and a little more graphite showed through. Tannins also eased back. Medium weight and not quite as rich as some others from the vintage. Upped the rating a point to 88.

This has come on leaps and bounds in the last year. The fruit is now much more apparent, with a particularly intense seam of blackcurrant in mid-palate and a fine, long finish. Far better than some LRs in the not so distant past, there is practically no more of the rusticity that used to characterize this estate.
