90 Points

Sunday, July 19, 2015 - Dim Sum Club at Ding Dong (Ding Dong, Ann Siang Hill, Singapore): I liked this quite a bit the last time I tried it. Not so impressed this time round. It was still decently good, but rather tighter and woodier and less charming. On the nose, a distinctly brambly, spicy twang cut through rich aromas of plums and blueberries that almost brought to mind Syrah. Only with time and air did a more Bordelais hint of capsicum start drifting out. A more old world sensibility set in on the palate, with grippy, slightly powdery tannins and juicy acidity forming a frame for chewy flavours of cassis, plums and dark berries. The finish was a bit muted, maybe even muddled, with structure and fruit and a little herby, brambly note stumbling their way into a rather unconvincing end. Altogether, not bad, but not great. This seems to be going through an awkward stage. I would lay it aside for 4-5 years and hope it works itself out by then and reverts to the rather more charming wine that I remember.
