As for last time, this is just a great claret at its peak. Smoky, cigar box character but with enough fruit still there that it's not falling over yet. Good and integrated.

Had a case of 12, 6 left now, wish I had waited. In a great place, forget the idea that 2004 was a poor year, just choose the right chateau and wait! Cant see this getting better but will stay at this level for, I guess, 8 years. Just what claret is supposed to be.

Has evolved and is really hitting its stride now. More energy vs last bottle. Tannins now completely melted into a fine powder. Nose is classic St Julien dominated by cigarr-box/cedar. Palate has some lovely sweet cassis, tobacco and pencilshave. A surprisingly spicy finish with good length. Lagrange is still hallmark Bordeaux for us and clearly did better than many in this vintage. Probably at peak now.

Had better vintages of this one in the glass. A little flat, cherry-dominated wine that runs a little short at the end. Not bad but far away from good vintages...needs a lot of air...89-90

Popped and poured, and drank over two days. Impeccably stored and only 2-3mm of cork seepage. This thing was still primal, but flavorful nonetheless. Cannot believe the cost of this wine now since it was reasonably priced just a few years ago.

Remains in excellent shape indeed. Colour is dark matt red, still opaque at the core, brick red at the rim. A touch smudgy. On opening it was a bit unsettled but quickly settled down on decanting. Completely integrated claret nose that seamlessly stitches together cassis and oak, plum, cherry, mint, the slightest whiff of wet coal. The palate still has a surprisingly fruity core - surprising both for the age and vintage. It's polished and glides across the palate. Tannins are fully resolved. Perhaps a touch of mocha on the finish but what marks it for me today is just how integrated all the flavours are - nothing sticks out as identifiable. Hugely enjoyable.

So initially, this wine checks all the boxes. It's good. Aromas of black berries, eucalyptus, black peppercorns, dusty woodsy stuff. It tastes really good. Pretty basic, but super smooth and impressively balanced.
Second take. This wine is absolutely delicious and stunning...

Tremendously delicious and at a perfect point of perfectly integrated fruit along with more developed characters. Even immediately on opening it has classic mature claret nose of cassis and burnt leaves, but with air it shows a delightfully integrated blend of cherry, violet, wet leaves, mint and cedar wood, all well knit together. Just an excellent claret, a pleasure to drink. No hurry to drink, I suppose it depends how old tasting you like your claret.

Upfront smoked blackcurrant, toasted spices, leather with a nice earthy note at the base. The palate is earthy, with ripe black fruits and clove. The length of the mid-palate is amazingly on a rounded structure. Transitions from entry to finish is seamless. Full bodied without the heat and bitter tannins. The finish simply reflects the palate with some wood nuances. This can be kept for another 3-5 years if you want the tannins to soften more.

75min decant. Big, beautiful Pauillac nose of dark fruit, charcoal, leather. Palate: not over the top complex but solid, pleasurable and really quite good. Great for $45 – would absolutely buy in quantity at that price.

Needs some decanting for sure to open up and develop as on start is a bit tights and shows very little charm. But post some decanting this hits its stride nicely. We actually had this blind and sort of split us on vintage (Andreas went on 2004 on account of its few harsh edges, Nicol went with much younger on account of the level of fruit). Definitely much on the fruit still and with life ahead it but also good quality and value as all their wines are. 89-91

I go with my earlier notes = a rather austere wine, but with a good deal of dark if a little overly dried fruit. It's achievement, however, is its excellent mouthfeel: full and well balanced, and with a very satisfying maturity.

Took a while to open up, then much the same as the last two bottles - quite intense dark fruits, with the usual restrained St.Julien spice and a decent finish. Not quite as bouncy as before - I can't see it getting any better and on the basis of this bottle, I will open my last one next year.

A very solid wine , classic in style and definitely has improved over the years since we had it last ( Papies 88/89 4yrs ago). Has still a bit of a bitter edge on the finish which is the let down of the wine but aside from there on it’s a very good value beautiful wine. Easy 91 and with lots of life ahead. Lagrange is for us one of those arbitrage if price and quality. The 1990 and 1996 are now proper jewels.

This is drinking great right now. Beautiful, open nose, very classic left bank, tannins fully resolved, nice and bright lift od acidity on the finish. Not the most complex or fleshy palate ever, but providing a lot of enjoyment now. Start drinking!

Almost opaque colour and, when poured, with welcoming bright bubbles around the rim (it is healthy); deep, intriguing nose of mature wood, dark fruit and earth, quite complex; taste = good mouthfeel, if somewhat astringent around the edges. The fruit is subdued, and there is just a little too much acidity , but nonetheless this is an interesting wine (as so many not quite "successful" clarets are), not only for what it delivers but for what it encourages us to think about what it might have delivered, had it not been for the 2004 vintage.
So, broadening the normal criteria of our points system, this is what I have come to: bouquet 92; mouthfeel and texture 91; fruit 88. And then a score for something for which I can't quite find a category: the individual character of the wine, the medley of its constituent parts. In other words, is it an interesting wine? Yes = 91.

Nice blueberry and raspberry fruit with a strong smokey profile, some wet stones, sweet licorice, and spice (almost Cab Franc like) on the attractive bright-orange acidic finish. I want some more grip, although it it showed better in this regard on day 2. A little simple. Plenty of fruit and acid left, but the tannic structure seemed faded. Better on day 2 and better in smaller Zalto glass rather than bigger Sommeliers glass (something to keep in mind for weaker vintages). This wasn’t a great Bordeaux, but it was still a delightful wine and that’s the thing about Bordeaux: even when it’s not great, it is still pretty good. If it doesn’t hit you sensually, it will at least hit you intellectually.

(Decanted for two hours) Deep red colour with a youthful blue red hue. Maturing nose showing wet soil, dried herbs, red fruit and minerals that is a bit tight right now. Smooth tannins on the palate and still showing red fruit before the more tertiary notes starts to take over as this is transforming into its next phase. This is a good showing Lagrange that is nice already, but should improve even more as it moves into more tertiary notes. 🍷Best 2019-2029

54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.
Red-ish hue, still relatively compact rim. Showing some sign of age but still a lot of vibrancy and freshness in appearance.
Aromatics is the star of the show. Savory cassis, black currant, black cherry, licorice, truffle, sous bois, and slightly herbal undertone.
Structurally strong but completely integrated. Med tannin, med to med plus acidity, med body, dry. There is a lot of black fruit profile, smoke, cigar box, and unbrewed tea leaf. The finish is refreshing, although slightly abrupt if I can be overly critical.
At this price point (even after factoring in the ridiculous tax in Thailand), this is an amazing value for a masculine, classic St Julien. Lagrange is a typical Bordeaux that requires a decent amount of time to come around (good things in life worth waiting). This will hold for 5 more years at least before it enters the realm of completely tiertary development. I prefer it like this. At its peak. 91.

Classic bdx nose and palate, Lagrange always delivers pleasure on these parameters. Reasonably long, still grippy tannins while fruit is on the light side as expected in this vintage. Refreshing with steak but another 2004 lacking power and energy. Enjoyable none the less.

Classic mature Bordeaux from a reliable Chateau. Decanted for an hour and sipped slowly before, during and after dinner. A perfect wine to sip while grilling chicken breasts as the earthy wine blended with the smoky notes from the grill. Dusty tannins and a nice compliment to dinner. I think it’s at a plateau in it’s drinking window not gonna get much better but has backbone to survive awhile.

Much the same as a year ago, quite opulent but soft and with just enough bite to give it a fresh finish - it won’t improve but this will give pleasure for several more years.

Chateau Lagrange dinner (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Medium expressive nose subtle red fruit, lead pencil, a hint of bell pepper and limestone mineral. A bit diluted and soft which makes the wine easy to enjoy, especially with food. The wine for AFWEs or Chinon lovers. Most ready wine of the flight.

Popped and poured. Right out of the gate this wine is putting out some really intriguing things in its bouquet: minty, weedy, dilly notes remind me of two wines in my past, a 1974 Heitz Martha's Vineyard and a late '60s Petrus. Not bad company. Pretty dark red in color, with a glossy, rich robe on the glass, this is showing no obvious signs of age. In the mouth there is lots of vanilla and menthol, and in a very good way I must say. I don't know how air will affect this, but I have to say that this is right now the wine of the weekend! A belated birthday present since yesterday was my big day. 5-13-17-8: 93/100.

Needed a couple of hours to open, then very impressive. There's a definite change of style compared to previous vintages, with more opulence to the edges, with notes of vanilla and crème brûlée on the nose and palate over the usual St.Julien spice. It's not in the same category as the top wines from St.Julien, but this is a very good effort. There's a pleasant freshness to the fruit which the opulence complements. Obviously far better than the higher rated 2003.

Popped and poured. Opaque bloody red. Decent viscosity. Nose sports very nice graphite and minerals. Iron. Palate is fairly rich, round, and sports ripe reddish fruit. Nothing outstanding, just a solid Bordeaux doing well at 13, with more years to live; still has some unresolved tannin, hoping the fruit will last for my remaining bottle. 5-13-16-7: 91/100.

Can't give this a 90+ score as it lacks depth, length and richness. Medium body, average fruit. As others speculated, may be going through dumb phase. But, not lots of fruit to work with so not sure how much better it gets. Have 5 more bottles, will check back in 2-3 years.

Great bottle of classic St Julien in a nice mature state. Although no particularly unusual flavours came through the expected smokey fruit was present and correct. Very nice wine that I would have marked higher if it had an edge, however very pleasant indeed. Partnered beautifully with roast lamb.

A very solid claret. On opening it displays masses of wet coal and ash. This blows off after an hour or two revealing more typical, mature blackcurrant and cedar aromas, and a whiff of eucalyptus. The mid-palate perhaps lacks a degree of intensity, but it follows in similar style to the nose, finishing with a cocoa powder note and soft sandy tannins. I have tried this wine 4 times since release and I would say this is the first time it was within its drinking window, and will keep on solidly for at least another 5 years.

Outstanding bottle of wine. I thought this wine tasted young. Dark fruit with a blend of herbs and some wood. Had it with the '05 Stag's Leap Fay, '02 Mondavi Reserve Stag's Leap C/S and '04 Larrivet Haut Brion. I believe the '04 LaGrange is better than the '03 they produced. In fact, I believe '03 is an incredibly overhyped vintage. I would gladly trade my '03's from Bordeaux for any '01's or 04's.

I absolutely endorse the review by Paul S below "rather tighter and woodier and less charming" than I remember. It's rather textbook St Julien but not mature, perhaps going through a bit of an awkward stage.
Leave until 2020. Try in 2018 if you have a few bottles.
I expect that it will become more charming. Based on nose/aromas.
PS Samples decantered into completely full mini bottles and stored in fridge improved considerably over 2 days. Very heartening suggesting that this will get better with further age (say 95+ points perhaps).

Dim Sum Club at Ding Dong (Ding Dong, Ann Siang Hill, Singapore): I liked this quite a bit the last time I tried it. Not so impressed this time round. It was still decently good, but rather tighter and woodier and less charming. On the nose, a distinctly brambly, spicy twang cut through rich aromas of plums and blueberries that almost brought to mind Syrah. Only with time and air did a more Bordelais hint of capsicum start drifting out. A more old world sensibility set in on the palate, with grippy, slightly powdery tannins and juicy acidity forming a frame for chewy flavours of cassis, plums and dark berries. The finish was a bit muted, maybe even muddled, with structure and fruit and a little herby, brambly note stumbling their way into a rather unconvincing end. Altogether, not bad, but not great. This seems to be going through an awkward stage. I would lay it aside for 4-5 years and hope it works itself out by then and reverts to the rather more charming wine that I remember.

This was my top wine of the tasting, but the group ranked it #2 by a very slight decrement. The wine has excellent balance and has become fully integrated. A few years back, it was almost undrinkable, as the tannin completely took over and was a harsh taskmaster. Now, the tannin has become tame and is working well with acid and fruit. There is a little green pepper upon entry, which is not a bad thing, and it walks into the background as the midpalate fruit takes over and carries through to the finish. This wine has really come around and shows an '04 can be a fine wine, too.

By the glass at the BA lounge. Not sure on bottle opening time. Dark, red , youthful. Dark fruits, light herbal on the nose. On the palate it is young and not yet in sync. Has a few harsh edges, especially on the finish. Good wine but not in its happiest place, still though not bad. 88

Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2014-10; Bordeaux 2004 left bank from magnum. (By VD): In the nose an explosion of ripe red and dark berry fruits as well as cherries. On the palate beautiful and juicy dark forest fruits, beautiful acidity and friendly tannin. Lovely and full bodied wine with a good length. Maturity stage now and will stay on this level for some years. Would like to taste this again around 2019 to see how much potential there really is (considering the drinking window until 2035 in CT…) Definitely lovely drinking now and the next 5+ years. 91+

This wine still has a rather strong backbone of tannin, although they are quite refined and a bit silky. The fruit starts out bright and held its own throughout the bottle. Decanted for 1 hour before tasting and it probably could have used 2 to 3 hours. By the 2 hour there was a nice tobacco and smoke nose that lent significant interest to the somewhat unusual cherry nuance that showed in the 1 hour.

By the glass at the BA lounge. Opened for maybe 15mins.Young yet approachable wine with firm tannin, at time sharp and edgy but still most of it is about well made classic claret. Nose of pepper and dark fruits, good palate presence. Ok feels a touch ligh on mid palate but given age this should be a 91. 89 for now, but we like Lagrange and consider it to be among the best value wines

A Forgotten Event (Unknown): I actually thought this was very nice. It had a nice nose, if still a bit primary, with ripe cassis and blackberries and sweet cherries, a bit of earthiness and seasoning of spice and herby tobacco notes. The palate shared the ripeness on the nose, with slightly stewed, sweet flavours of cherries and berries that could almost have belonged to a Cabernet blend from sunnier climes. However, there was clearly old world balance and nous on the wine, with some purity showing on the fruit alongside fine tannins and fresh acidity, all this just beginning to integrate nicely. Yummy stuff. It had a good finish too, with gentle motes of warm spice mingling amidst more dark fruited notes. This was a nice wine, and its best years are still ahead of it too. It should be lovely in another 5-6 years.

2004 Bordeaux Tasting: Sweet vanilla and coffee oak nose, creamy red fruits. Lots of sweet baking cocoa and toast, smells like a coffee milkshake. Bit of spice pokes out on the nose with some masked red fruits. More coffee, coffee and coffee, its hard to get past it. Dense and rich mouth feel with more of the cocoa and coffee milkshake thing going on. Dark and chewy, hard time finding fruit underneath all of this wood. After a bit of air the fruit seems to emerge but I am not sure there is enough fruit to soak up all of this new wood. Very disappointing and very modern in style, surprising given the vintage.

There is an immediate smell of perfume to this with the typical cassis, sadle leather, tree root and earth. Slightly lacking in the mid section but silky smooth. Blackberry and blueberry with hint of salt and black pepper on a smooth finish. Just a hint of tannin still lingering amongst the fresh acid grip. Great wine and starting to come into it's own. Not blockbuster concentration. Will improve a little with a few more years of bottle age but why wait. It's fresh and vibrant now and the nose is right on the money-great.

Deep red still, little sign of any real age. lots of sediment. Cord in contact with wine was deep crust, solid purple/black. Fruit was solid, black berries, chocolate, acid more prominent than tannin at this point. Leather. Very nice wine, probably close to peak.
Will enjoy the other two bottle if close to this. The wine looks Inky colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Blackberry, Blueberry, Raspberry, Black currant (cassis), and Raisin. The body is Medium. The wine has Leathery texture. The wine finishes Medium.

I didn't store this bottle perfectly, but the color and cork look fine. Nose of cassis and black fruits, milk chocolate, and oaky vanilla, with the merlot dominating the cab despite there being significantly more cab in the blend. The palate shows nicely layered, chocolatey black fruit in a mid-weight style but there's too much oak here for my taste and it's a bit grainy and dry, and I wonder if there's enough material here for the oak to over fully integrate. I also wonder if the storage affected this, so no score. Better on day 2.

2h decant. Nice but not as good as other 04 bdx I have had. The fine but dry tannins are still well present but not in an unpleasant way, infact goes very well with steak right now. Drinking on its own, there is however a bit too much oak both on the nose and palate for my taste.

Too big and oaky, bitter, tannic. Why on earth would you choose to kill all the fruit with the French oak? Why? No pleasure. Only with food. Needs a lot of time for the oak to integrate and tannins to soften. Cheers

taste: medium bodied with medium acidity and good supporting tannins. Balanced and classy tones of cedar, roasted coffee, dark red fruits and bits of kirsch
overall: This could maybe use a little more time, but if one wants to drink it I don't think they could be faulted. This isn't a long haul wine, though it does seem like it can definitely go 25 years in a good cellar. Pretty classic lagrange that shows off what is enjoyable from the estate

Tannins are still overwhelming this wine. The nose has great fruit and the finish show there is fruit underneath, but mostly hidden. After is aired for 2 hours the tannins still dominate, but some of the complexity of the wine started to show through with some creamy textures and refinements. I guessing it needs minimum of 4 to 6 more years in the rack before I open another one. The son could not get past the tannin and rated it only 85.

Dark impenetrable ruby red just a little lighter at its rim, earthy, wet peat on the nose, suggest this would evolve in time. Dark fruits and cigar box integrate perfectly through to well balanced finish. Lacking the extra dimension but a real joy. Paired with a braised slow cooked lamb shank.

Brought to an 04' Brdx tasting and had in a flight of St. Julien's along with Branaire and Leoville Poyferre. Opened 48 hrs prior to tasting. Good nose of dark fruit yet with a slight streak of bell pepper on the nose and palate. OK length to the finish. I expect this will improve with 8-10 yrs of cellaring. Oak a bit much at first, but within about 30 minutes it seemed more integrated. Medium-bodied, blackcurrant and plum fruit, a vanilla edge to the oak. As evening progressed some coffee/mocha and lead pencil notes came out. Not a big wine, but pleasant modern Bordeaux.

Early doors this was very reserved and it never really delivered on the nose at any point.
It took 4 hours in the decanter before it opened up at all and when it did it had light notes of pencil and smoke.
Pleasant without being outstanding.

Deep red colour with a youthful blue red hue.

Dense and rich mouth feel with more of the cocoa and coffee milkshake thing going on. Dark and chewy, hard time finding fruit underneath all of this wood.

Very good. Youthful, but can be drunk with great pleasure now. Just needs some air.

Classic with a modern touch. Everything in the right place, ripe tannin, dark fruit, touch of coffee. Still young, but already very nice.

Bibendum Bordeaux 2010 tasting including selected back vintages (Lords Cricket Ground - St Johns Wood, London): Nice nose, secondary flavours coming through. Leather, underbrush, earthy. Is light, lifted, refreshing and moreish. Imagine this with your Sunday Roast. Good effort and good value. 90+

2h decant. Nice but not as good as other 04 bdx I have had. The fine but dry tannins are still well present but not in an unpleasant way, infact goes very well with steak right now. Drinking on its own, there is however a bit too much oak both on the nose and palate for my taste.

Glossy ruby red with classic cedar and blackcurrant aromas. Fuller than the 07 tasted alongside it with sweet blackcurrant fruit and smoky tannins. Fresh and well balanced; seems quite well developed already.

Too big and oaky, bitter, tannic. Why on earth would you choose to kill all the fruit with the French oak? Why? No pleasure. Only with food. Needs a lot of time for the oak to integrate and tannins to soften. Cheers

Double decanted for 2 hours
Colour:Lighter than other Saint-Julien wines. Ruby red. Some sediment in bottle
Nose:I get some faint violets on nose. Red cherries. Very open for this age. My be due to the vintage which is typical more approachable
Taste:Tannins are present but not overwhelming allowing a nice refreshing mouthful of red fruit, again cherries. Plenty of structure and body yet at the same time very drinkable. Not a huge wine a la Barton but has more finesse. Very nice bottle...typical of this appelation

connoisseur wines spring european portfolio (Vivere, Chicago IL): nose: open and sleek nose of cedar, roasted coffee, dark red fruits, kirsch, and spice box tones. Good depth and well balanced
taste: medium bodied with medium acidity and good supporting tannins.

Blackberry and some light bell pepper on the nose. Bell pepper really shows on the palate. Finishes soft and more appealing than on the attack.

Deep dark and somewhat new world on the nose. Some oak and cassis without the barnyard and pencil shavings that are usually markers for Left Bank wines. Tannins are chewy but integrated. Opened beautifully over an hour and paired perfectly with an Irish Lamb Stew. Drank at Matt's during the Mayweather/Hatton fight,

Would buy more if the price was right.
