90 Points

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 - Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Medium ruby color, not inky. Nice nose of plums, currants, smoke, mushrooms. Well-structured on the palate, with good acidity. I would call it an Amador Structure, meaning that it's not as full-bodied as a Lodi model Zin. It has a certain fragility, probably from old vines at higher elevations, that is very appealing. Alc. 15.1% but wears it well. Some licorice notes kick in on the flavors. This is NOT a fruit bomb; rather the flavors are more earth-driven, with spice and mushroom notes. Finishes with moderately strong but velvety tannins, a bit of heat. This is a very nice bottle, a good example of the type. Lay it down? Not necessarily. The structure is not mouth-filling enough to reward patience, and it's really good now.
