Thursday, December 7, 2017 - First time drinking SQN. It’s been a bucket list wine of mine and I bought a bottle to share with a friend over a stunning porterhouse. At this level of winemaking and price it should be about two things - intensity or finesse. My two favourite wines are at either ends of the spectrum. I adore Pinot - especially the elegance of Chambolle or the finesse (and power) of Vosne Romanee. I also adore Rhone wines. Grenache in particular. I don’t want elegance here. I want intensity. This wine gives me that in abundance. I can still taste it two hours later - after having had an espresso. This is precision and power par excellence. I wondered if the hype could be realised. It is a simply stunning wine with the most powerful nose I have encountered. A huge powder keg of jammy black fruit. The tannins are wonderful and the finish is long and refined. This is winemaking at a level seldom seem. Yes this is hyperbole, but IMO, well deserved.
