Tuesday, January 28, 2014 - Bottle variation. Despite my resolution to wait on the next bottles, I opened this to go with lamb. A layer of sediment had deposited on the bottom of the cork and more was suspended in the wine. It was burnt purple-looking. I poured through an aerator with a strainer, and tasted, expecting to be disappointed again. I was not. The nose had fruit, forest floor detritus and spice, and the wine was nicely balanced on the palate. The acidity noted in the previous bottle was integrated, the tannins were resolved and pleasant fruit came through in a manner that made me acknowledge the complexity of the wine as a positive. The finish was very nice. Maybe not worth $75, but certainly worth $42.
