90 Points

Thursday, February 2, 2023 - Nose: smoke, cedar, pepper, violet, star anise, plum
Notes: the 1989 Baron delivers a rather St Julien kind of nose at this moment and I would say right now this is not very Baron like. The bottle is ex-chateau and is still very dark in color so its safe to say the condition is excellent . I had quite some Pichon Baron 1989 before and in the last 6 months I tasted this wine twice and it is quite different from what I had before. The wine is closed up and feels like it's not delivering what it should. This is the interesting thing about wines, the ups and downs and timing of drinking is quite crucial. Although I would continue to remain faithful on the potential this wine has to offer in the future but it's simply not at a great spot right now. It is not ready and we will have to resample it again in at least 5 years time.
