2011 Maison Ilan Chambertin

Community Tasting Note

Wednesday, November 5, 2014 - Opened a horizontal tasting of 6 2011 MI wines. Decanted at 3, served around 7. A noticeable step up in weight and interest, with fairly strong espresso/oak notes on the nose and palate. The only of the 6 wines that I would even want to drink again. Tried again after 24 hours in the decanter, still good.

11/6/2014 6:34:00 AM - Hello Chuck. I'm wondering how long these 2011 MI's were in the US? After all that these bottles have been through getting shipped here, I would be very hesitant to open without at least 3 months of rest to recover from any bottle and/or travel shock. You obviously know good wine when you taste it, but I'm also hoping that the whole Ray Walker project isn't the dud that it's looking like at this point. It will be a lot of money down the drain, literally.

11/6/2014 3:54:00 PM - Fingers, I don't know when they arrived in the US, but I received mine from Amedeo on 10/8, and they have been standing upright since then, more than 4 weeks to settle. Don't confuse bottling shock (real) with the much more controversial shipping shock. I don't believe in shipping shock except for sediment in older wines. In whites and young reds, IMO, shipping shock is a fallacy. YMMV.
