93 Points

Saturday, December 28, 2013 - 91-95. This is the third night opened. The first I would have given it a straight 95. Tremendous depth, bold dark cherry, and violets. But by the second night, the fruit had lost some of its intensity, and the tannins had kicked in. Tonight it's a little more muted, with less cherry fruity residual flavor or nose, but with more of a lavender scent and soil overtones. Now it's pretty expensive (close in fact to some Grand Crus) so that I'm probably going to have to pass on further purchases, especially since there are so many wonderful 1er crus at better price points. Still, for those with deep pockets...

12/28/2013 9:46:00 PM - looks like this is not showing as well as 09' vintage which I love very much, maybe just different in style. Actually the initial tranche was pretty cheap, picked up two cases since I was so impressed with 09' vintage.

12/29/2013 11:47:00 AM - Good move! Don't get me wrong-I really like the wine, but it's about $120 a bottle. If you PROMISE not to buy them all the best values in Pommard in 2010 I've tried are the Billard-Gonnets: their Chaponnieres VVs are a steal and the Pommard Rugiens have exceptional QPR. Perhaps not quite the class of the Epeneaux but really excellent.

    I'll try the '09. Thanks.

12/29/2013 8:08:00 PM - Will look for some Billard-Gonnets wines to try. Had Henri 2010 Boillot Rugiens some times back, very good wine and good QPR but probably did not have the concentration and opulent of 09' Comte Armand Epeneaux.
