98 Points

Tuesday, January 20, 2015 - Drank together with La Turque 1998. Opened 8 hours before and decanted just before drinking over the course of 3 hours. Stunning wine, clearly too young, initially closed, but gradually opening up. Though certainly massive, it's a mammoth on ballet shoes, elegant and gracious. Typical shiraz notes of spice box and black pepper. Lots of black fruit: huge blackberry and raspberry scents, later also creme de cassis, strawberry and some lighter, fresher hints of mint and citrus. Gradually deepening, smoke, bacon, juicy meat, smoked ham (pata negra!) taking over. After 3 hours in the decanter Cuban cigars, cedar, figs, ripe plums, tar and earth. Fresh with good acidity. All signs say this wine can still improve over the course of the next 20+ years. Can't wait to be around when it happens!
