90 Points

Tuesday, October 14, 2014 - Dinner at Bochinche with Ray and Marianne (Bochinche, Martin Road): 45% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Bonarda, made in conjunction with Allegrini (of Amarone fame), in a similar ripasso style - this was an easy to drink wine that went well with the heavily flavoured Argentinian meat dishes that we had on the day. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was pretty good for what it is. The nose showed a mix of aromas very reminiscent of Amarone, with the sweet dried fruit notes of raisins and plums wed to a smoky, earthy, herby backdrop. On the palate, the wine showed a rather thick texture, with more of those preserved plums and sweet black raisin notes, all swirled around with a nice dose of smoke and spice. There was plenty of acidity to keep the wine balance in spite of its ripe weight, and some surprisingly fine tannins as well, all leading into a decent finish, with more earthy, herby notes setting in. A decent wine, good for early drinking.
