Monday, January 9, 2012 - Opened about 4-5 hours in advance but not decanted. Initially smelled of heavy barrel influence and had a thin/high acid tone to it that was worrisome. By the time we got to it the nose had opened substantially. Red raspberries, dark chocolate, some barrel notes, a bit of soy/worchestshire sauce and some general sauvage notes going on in the nose. Flavors revolve around the core of the raspberries and dark chocolate. A little earth funk in there takes away from some of the purity but may help a bit in the complexity department. Mid-weight with nice texture. Hardly screeching in acidity or tannin. In fact this is probably more on the ready to drink side than the hold side. While I think it is fine for the time being I don't see this as having tons of upside to it. A very, very nice bottle of Burgundy but, perhaps, not in the league of the better Chambertins. Still, you could do worse.
