Somewhat disappointing. Fading -- shows signs of past richness (flabbiness?), but now? Mostly pretty sour and uninspiring. Decent earthy components, but that's about it on the upside. No perceptible reason to hold further.

The color was milky with a lot of sediments. Very aromatic with flowers, rose petals, red fruit and stems. The nose alone was a 93 points. The palate was a bit restrained and hollow initially. After one hour, the palate opened up beautifully with pretty red fruit emerging. This is very impressive.

Opened about 4-5 hours in advance but not decanted. Initially smelled of heavy barrel influence and had a thin/high acid tone to it that was worrisome. By the time we got to it the nose had opened substantially. Red raspberries, dark chocolate, some barrel notes, a bit of soy/worchestshire sauce and some general sauvage notes going on in the nose. Flavors revolve around the core of the raspberries and dark chocolate. A little earth funk in there takes away from some of the purity but may help a bit in the complexity department. Mid-weight with nice texture. Hardly screeching in acidity or tannin. In fact this is probably more on the ready to drink side than the hold side. While I think it is fine for the time being I don't see this as having tons of upside to it. A very, very nice bottle of Burgundy but, perhaps, not in the league of the better Chambertins. Still, you could do worse.

Kensington Wine Tasting, Before and During Auction (The Pump Room - Chicago IL): Wine tasting. Totally shut down when forst opened, this was then open several hours before trying. Floral nose with interesting rose elements. Intense black fruit flavors with perfumed character. Moderate grip, good length. Big contrast with 1995 vintage also served in the tasting.
