Thursday, February 28, 2008 - Barolo 1958, 1967, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1987 (Chez Dal Piaz): 've had a handful of bottle from this lot and they have been maddeningly all over the place in terms of quality with a corked bottle showing perhaps the most promise. That being said this performed well. Out of the bottle it offered a smoky nose of tobacco and rosemary with a hint of hot terracotta in the background. It was taut and lean in the mouth with a preponderance of bitter roots on the palate and an hint of fruit on the finish that was edged out by the drying tannins. With time this opened up to reveal just a classic array typical of Bartolo's wines. Floral and rhubarb notes competed with sweet herbs and chinato scents to produce a captivating whole. In the mouth the wine had filled out admirably. A viscous texture with a youthful texture both tannic and bright supported intense black cherry and black cherry pit fruit, a touch of roasting nut meats adding complexity and a bit of bitter cut on the finish adding complexity. this was perhaps a bit clumsy yet it was still lovely and very satisfying.
