  • Brought to a restaurant and drank on my 40th birthday, so no formal notes were taken, just a mental score and highlights. It was popped and poured, then immediately decanted and drank over an hour and a half. This was quite pretty on the nose with lots of lifted aroma and clean, gorgeous aged Barolo fruit on the palate. It offered nice red fruits and some beautiful acid integration on the palate. The finish was a bit clipped, and while it had that lingering acidity which was beautiful, it also was showing fruit that was a little more stale and older; some of that old book coming in. My wife said this was one of the best old Barolos she's had, but she was likely just blinded my my wonderfulness on my 40th birthday. It was definitely the best 1979 I have had to date, though.

  • On the nose, I found tangy, spicy floral notes, old library book and lean red berries. On the palate, intense but overripe fruit flooded the senses but dropped off quickly to reveal drying and mouth-puckering tannin.

  • Barolo 1958, 1967, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1987 (Chez Dal Piaz): 've had a handful of bottle from this lot and they have been maddeningly all over the place in terms of quality with a corked bottle showing perhaps the most promise. That being said this performed well. Out of the bottle it offered a smoky nose of tobacco and rosemary with a hint of hot terracotta in the background. It was taut and lean in the mouth with a preponderance of bitter roots on the palate and an hint of fruit on the finish that was edged out by the drying tannins. With time this opened up to reveal just a classic array typical of Bartolo's wines. Floral and rhubarb notes competed with sweet herbs and chinato scents to produce a captivating whole. In the mouth the wine had filled out admirably. A viscous texture with a youthful texture both tannic and bright supported intense black cherry and black cherry pit fruit, a touch of roasting nut meats adding complexity and a bit of bitter cut on the finish adding complexity. this was perhaps a bit clumsy yet it was still lovely and very satisfying.

  • A Knight at babbo (New York): Corked but this had nice color and weight in the mouth. Good bottles are very nice right now.

  • (at Della Note – Baltimore) Deep brick – full to rim. Wonderful nose of sweet red fruit – cherry, perfume and a citrus / tangerine thing going on. Silky and full attack that has just a touch of bitterness on the finish. I really liked this. Drinking well now but no real hurry. (93)
