Monday, December 12, 2022 - Med ruby with slightly garnet rims. Very perfumed nose of violets and roses, candied fennel, spices, red fruit and cut hay. Notes of concentrated dark red fruit, cherries, plums, slight spices, but really pure and clean fruit. Dry long finish that goes on for a while. Med tannins with slight grip, this could use another 5-10 years, but was still very enjoyable PnP. Coming from an Arnoux Lachaux Clos Vougeot last night, the DRC Echezeaux was on a higher level. Impeccable balance and smoothness, everything held in equilibrium with a perfect concentration of fruit, a lot of complexity, and a long long finish. It is hard to say what could be improved, besides age to resolve the tannins. The wine closed down after a hour, which just showed its potential. Spectacular nose and wine, this was showing no weakness of the 2011 vintage.

This was my first DRC and my DRC Sherpa was there to help guide the experience. He noted that the wine was quintessential DRC with its candied fennel (saunf) as one of his distinguishing factors. He also noted that this was opened 5 years too young, but had all the checkmarks of a great DRC. Just an amazing wine that still met and exceeded my expectations despite the reputation that DRC holds.
