Friday, November 16, 2012 - I've trained myself to stay away from European wines that hail from the 2002 vintage, partially because I know that the weather in some of the regions was pretty bad, but mostly because of the vintage charts. After tasting through some of those wines over the years I've realized it's a mistake to avoid that vintage, the strongest case so far being the '02 Heredia Gravonia ('02 Bordeaux is drinking very well right now). A light honey color prefaces a rich but refreshing nose of beeswax, pineapple, vanilla, string beans, and egg nog. This is so complex on the nose. Ultimate balance in the mouth with a very long finish of Madagascar vanilla beans and glycerin. I'm writing this after three days of being open so this is from memory, but that's no problem as this was unforgettable. I left two inches in the bottle which I just finished and at this point the wine is as rich as custard but dry with the vanilla having turned to a sort of creme brulee caramel that pretty much dominates the persona of the wine showing no oxidation. The Viura wines from Heredia are built for the long haul. Drink by 2026.
