Sunday, October 16, 2016 - Prismatic, haunting nose of cherries in spirit, balsamic Mediterranean herbs, plenty of dried fruit, and an almost port-like sweetness. The depth of the aromas is matched by deft elegance on the palate. This is drinking magnificently, and has plenty of classic sangiovese sour cherry, balsam, herbs, and a light bitterness, like crushed grape pip. Very long, with a refreshing acidity that perfectly encapsulates the Montalcino terroir. This wine is an absolute pleasure to drink, not least because everything is in balance: the sweetness of the fruit is profound, but not overly assertive thanks to the firm tannins and tight acidic backbone. Towards the more traditional end of Brunello. I suspect this will improve for another two decades, but it is frankly hard to resist now.
