Monday, November 20, 2017 - Purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this opaque red/garnet wine was decanted off of its substantial sediment and serially tasted over the ensuing three hours. Not revealing much during the first hour, it subsequently unfurls an impressive bouquet of black raspberries, lavender, orange zest and underbrush. Full-bodied, fresh, softly oaked and with gorgeous purity of fruit, it delivers a flavor payload mirroring the nose. I'm baffled at how this can be the case, but there is no heat from the wine's lofty 16.1% alcohol when served at the appropriate temperature of 60-65°F. Beautifully dense on the mid-palate and finishing long, this is a stellar Zinfandel that is in its sweet spot. At this point in its evolution, it is very important to decant it off of its sediment and give it plenty of aeration. Drink now-2020.
