2003 Château Duhart-Milon

93 Points

Saturday, December 17, 2016 - Eeeeenteresting. Some of the characteristics from my note from a dozen years ago are still here. In the intervening period Parker gave this a major "upgrade" to the tune of 96 points or something like that, and it has indeed developed very well and seems to be among the more successful 2003s. It pours out a vibrant ruby color though the taste at first is bizarrely hollow considering the color and aromatics. Air and the warmup from cellar temperature fleshes it out nicely and it picks up deep blackberry flavors with a nuttiness that segues to the more customary cedar shavings and a twist of raisined sur-maturité on the back end that gives away the vintage. It's a fatter wine than Duhart usually is, not sure it will ever be as classy (or pull off the Petite Lafite personality) as the 1995 or 1996, but no doubt it has more richness and stuffing so maybe there will be a different kind of payoff.
