Warm fruit, still some tannin in the background, gentle spice. Slightly atypical for Pauillac, no doubt related to the year. No rush but won't improve from here.

Hard to believe this is a 2003. Maybe it’s the effect of later, climate changed wines, but this does not feel so outsized or “solar.” There is definitely a lot of runway left, as the fruit is still prominent, and there’s a finishing dash of tannin that does more than just provide structure. Some developed character is creeping in around the edges, with hints of leather and cedar, but overall this still feels youthful, which is hard to believe for a 21 year old wine. Glad I have more.

10 December 2022 Intense ruby red. Komplex Grand Cru casis nose, Elegant and well developed after 19 years. It is a very elegant Pauillac. Great wine on a pritty high level. Taste is intense, Cabernet driven, mocca, ripe. Great pleasure to drink it now. Drunk this wine over years. Started to open arround 2020. Now it is a perfect Pauillac Gand Cru. It will stay at this level over the next years.
Update 2 February 2024: Still in good shape. Drinking window is still open, 2026+. Cassis, mocca, classic Cabernet Sauvignan driven Bordeaux. Need 2h to show its beauty. Value Pauillac. Realy great wine now!!!

Continues to be a great value and drinks above its original price point. Classic Pauillac (the auction price keeps rising). I have had 2024 down as the last year in the drink window for this wine. I do not recall where I picked up this drink window. The wine shows no sign of tiring. It might make sense to move that window back a little.

10th bottle over the last few years. This has become my benchmark and go-to bottle for nice "high-end" Bordeaux. It is always appreciated by guests not so used to drink much wine. Some slight bottle variation but the last one was showing great with no signs of being over the hill. Drank with friends at dinner alongside Duhart Milon 1985 & 2009. First bottle empty and tastiest wine of the night. 2009 was fantastic, a more velvety palate but the 2003 has the mix of maturity paired with strong fruit that the 2009 will have some day in the future. 1985 is one to avoid imo.

Opened by Mark. 3rd time I have had this wine. It was part of a 4 bottle mini horizontal of 2003 Bordeaux. I ended up scoring this the lowest of the 4 bottles. Crimson color. Lighter tannins than the other wines. This had some bitter black fruit with plum, olive and tar notes. Medium bodied with some charcoal on the finish. 89 points.

Expressing considerable depth, even with the hot vintage. Soft red fruit is definitely giving way to tertiary flavors of cedar, old leather, and earth. A beauty. Finishes long and plenty of life left.

Beautiful bright clear ruby color showing zero signs of degradation. Bright ripe raspberries and a faint pastry note on the nose. Notes of ripe raspberries, stronger oak than I remember from the last bottle, bramble, and some vanillin with strong tannins. It feels like this wine had entered a closed stage, though I wouldn’t normally expect that at this stage in the evolution. Still quite tasty.

Pulled cork at home before a dinner out. Cork in perfect condition. Explosive nose on pour into the decanter. It sat there for about an hour before I put it back in the bottle and we left. Went to a great French restaurant. We passed on the pairing menu and drank this with courses 2-3. Awesome and beautiful. Halfway through the bottle it's absolute red velvet. Want more.

4th Saturday Group: Old & Young (J&S): Blind. Some bricking with a lovely bouquet of black currant, leather, tobacco and violet, becoming more red-fruited as it opens in the glass. Medium-bodied with softened tannins and flavors of red fruit, tobacco and spice.
In a really nice place, this had been decanted for an hour and then rebottled, ending up in the first flight a little over two hours after the cork was first pulled. With seven bottles remaining in the cellar I think I may pull a bottle or two each year over the next three to five years.

Cigar box, black cherry, lavender notes. Reminds me of wisps of campfire smoke in northwest forest wilderness in early summer, not long after a heavy rain.

I feel that there might still be something more here. But a wonderful wine with blue fruits, cigar box and some dark chocolate. Nice finish with velvet tannins. Classic Bordeaux. Beautiful mouthfeel and easy to drink. Bravo.

A very classical nose of cassis and cigar box, with a bit of violet but nothing burnt. In the mouth, a rather appealing combination of blackcurrant and sour cherry, silky and polished, albeit with a little mouth-puckering astringency (but as a Loire red lover, I enjoy a bit of sappy astringency). Still quite fresh, not at all overdone, really quite classic in style. Today, it's quite expensive at 74€ and for a bit less I'd rather have a 2006, but the 03 is a lot better than the 2000.

Bordeaux 2003 Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Some spun sugar / caramel on the nose. Some dark fruits as well but a slightly roasted character. Palate is short and a little worked. Crumb of comfort is that the tannins appear to be fully resolved.

2003 Bordeaux @ Piccolino (Piccolino, Liverpool Street Stn, London): Dense ruby. Dusty blackberry nose. Dark red to black fruit. A density and a little heat. Roasted coffee coming through on the nose. It’s interesting but as with all these wines there’s a big difference between being able to drink a glass and wanting to. **1/2

Overall: well integrated, high quality Bordeaux that is right in the drinking window but may have a few years left. MUST be decanted 2-3 hours to really develop - the nose right out of the bottle was closed and rather unpleasant.
Color: deep, dark garnet, but not entirely opaque; definitely showing signs of age with earth tones toward the rim.
Nose: baking spices, blackberry, black cherry, cigar box (Spanish cedar)
Palate: medium tannins, medium acid, medium-full body; ripe, dark red or black cherries and sweet cranberry; this isn’t a sweet wine but the cranberry flavor is more like the thanksgiving dish than the tart, raw cranberry you might find in some Tuscan wines. Everything is underpinned by darker flavors that are hard to isolate - maybe some leather, blackberry, cinnamon/nutmeg/clove. This is really well integrated and specific notes are challenging to identify.
Slightly atypical reflecting the hot year, but still some underlying Pauillac muscularity and structure, wrapped in warm fruit, with a hint of new world. But still has a fragrant spicebox nose, and is a nice package.
Purchased at release, cellared between 55-65°F. Perfect cork, and three dime sized wafers of sediment after decanting. Garnet red color. Medium aromatics come from the glass and show soft cassis and a bit of leather and dried mushroom.

I have not had a bottle of this one in a couple of years. The last bottle or two were a little off from earlier bottles. This one was back to what it was before......definitely drinking above its price point. Decanted for 2 hours, and that seemed to be the right amount of time. It produced all of the deep/dark notes one expects from a Pauillac wine.

Similar to others. Really nice wine but a bit monolithic. Great power, no hard edges, just lacks complexity. Not sure if it will improve with time or not. It's a very nice wine overall

drinking really well right now. meaty, dusty, and mushroomy on the nose with slight notes of red fruit. the palate is consumed with dark chocolate and red cherry. the tannins are integrating but not gone and the acid is still racy. i drank this with a pork chop, and the wine, even at nearly 20 years old, still overpowered the meat. go with a bolder food pairing.

Maybe the sixth bottle over the last couple of years. Going strong: smooth, layered, tannins all mellowed out. For me this is easy drinking on a pretty High Level. Some volatility creeping in, so I will make sure to have drunk my remaining bottles by 2025. Drank along Pojeaux 2005, maybe an unfair comparison as it was pretty good but this Duhart is on another level. Very tasty.

Bravo !

Drank with 04 vintage - similar profile to the '04 release above, more ruby than garnet colored, not as structured and less full fruits with slightly more acidity on the finish. 04 was Dark garnet color with purple hues, medium to full-bodied, very aromatic, expressive but slightly austere blackberry and black currant fruits with classic Pauillac tones tobacco, creme de cassis, earth, spice and hints of cedar turning to moderate tannins and a bright fresh tangy acidity. https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2022/01/pour-boys-wine-dinner-features-dual.html

Moderate leathery nose. Initially fantastic, well balanced, leathery, nice fruit chalk and tannins. Becoming a bit acidic and losing the full finish after 15 minutes. Then opening up again after 30 minutes. Clearly a great wine but getting a bit finicky.

In its drinking window now and is a very pleasant, straight forward drinking wine, although for intellectual wine drinkers, please don’t look here.
The evolution of the wine was perhaps the most interesting. Very fruit driven (cassis, dark plums) and very cabernet dominated. The Merlot then took over after 2 hours (coffee, mocha, raspberry). Then the Merlot and tertiary notes really hit home with herbal notes, vanilla, cigar / tobacco. It was fun ride. Not a lot depth and complexity though.
Decant for 90 minutes if possible. Drink now or 7+ years.

Decanted for about two hours, medium garnet, still a lot of fruit, jammy, wet forest funk dissipated quickly. Long finish. Way less graphite presence that was very apparent in the ‘10. Drink up! And order more.
Followed a 2017 Auxey-Durresses Chardonnay and espresso martinis; served with Lean Cod and summer vegetables.

Intense nose of pepper, anise, earth, floral, menthol, dark fruit, tobacco leaf. Taste of black currant, cherry, eucalyptus, earth. A touch flat on the finish but lots of tannin left. Has a lot of life left, revisit in 5 years, but probably good for 10-20 though drinking spectacularly right now. Great wine.

Not a regular Bordeaux drinker, so not the best person to opine from that perspective. Nonetheless, this certainly overperformed my relatively modest expectations. Maybe a touch dense and roasty as one would expect given the year, but overall pretty classic and can definitely see the lafite familial resemblance. Well worth the $30 I paid on release, and happy to have a few more. No hurry whatsoever to drink.

Blind. Faded crimson red color with notes of currant, red plum and iron. Red berry fruit on the palate; softened tannins. Herb, iron and tobacco throughout. Has a touch of brett in there too. On the simpler side, this would probably show better paired with a meal.
This had been double decanted three hours before the flight was served.

Deep ruby, fairly viscous and visible extraction. Bright spiced nose, with medium ripe blackberry, and thyme, dried grass, and some savoury meats. Tannins soft, mouthwatering acids, quite some weight, and some good black fruit flavour intensity, with dark florals, dried grass, charcuterie, then cloves, and tar. A fairly long and complex finish

Open 3+ hours. There is a bit of ainse, dark fruit and cigar box on the nose.Medium/full body. Dark fruit and plenty of earth, good tannins and structure. Good acidity for the vintage, richer than some but classic Pauillac to be sure. I will drink my remaining bottles over the next 5 years based on its evolution since my first bottle 8 years ago. 92 points.

Silky and voluptuous. I would have thought this was from the new world if I didn’t know better. Ripe blackberries, black currant, and fig with a heavy dose of smoke, pepper, baking spice and cedar. Just the slightest hints of tertiary notes sticking through and not much pyrazines. Tannins are well integrated. Delicious now but may continue to improve over next 10 years as the fruit mellows.

The rim is finally start to show some age here. Dark fruits and tobacco leaf on the nose, perhaps complemented by hints of graphite. The wine popped right away without decanting. Blackberry, exotic spice (anise) and cigar box on the palate. Fine, sweet tannins. Medium acidity. Well balanced and precise. Not flabby, which is nice given the vintage.

On opening, it had a whiff of heat-affected fruit and a rather pinched, drying attack, but as with the last bottle, it just needed air. I didn't decant - I just poured half a glass and left the rest to breathe - two hours later, it was far better. The nose was classic Pauillac, with trademark aromas of cassis and cigar box cedar, the only sign of 03 being a slight hint of licorice. The attack was rich, velvety and full bodied, but without any traces of raisins or anything out of the ordinary - just ripe cassis. The middle section was wonderful, rising high and full of rich, but restrained notes of blueberry, blackberry and dark cherry, leading into a calm, confident finish of cassis, with just a slight hint of licorice right at the end. It was still quite tannic, the decent grip and ripe fruit ensuring it will probably improve further over the next decade. I think it is perhaps just a notch under Pontet-Canet, so 92 pts.
This is a seriously good wine, which we enjoyed more than the Pichon Baron tried a few months ago.

Impressive, blackfruit-based nose, showing black cherry, spices and cassis. Between medium and full bodied (13% ABV) with rounded blackfruit (especially black cherry) upfront. Adds plum and good density and depth through the mid-body. Feels quite well balanced with no trace of the heat of the vintage. Backside shows cassis, integrated spices and fine grained tannins. Good finishing length. All in all, I would say this wine is showing very well at present, but has the elements to be rewarding for at least another 5-7 more years. There should continue to be marginal improvements as positive integration continues, but no reason to hold off drinking.

Perfect fill and cork. Deep ruby to rim Much different than one year ago. Very closed. Dry and acidic. Buried tannins. Ok with food. But much better after 14 hour decant. Wait another year, at least. Or hold past 2023 for full maturity.

A bit of a nose bomb, with earthy forest floor, vegetal, perfume notes, and mineral undertones. Well balanced with a round mouth feel. Fruit is subtle now, and the palate is more about the leather and earthy notes, with a background of eucalyptus. The finish lingers pleasantly. Nice with a pepper steak. A quality wine which has the potential to evolve further. Probably has another 5 years at least, but very good now. Decanted for 1 hour.

Dark, healthy garnet color. Nose is very powerful. Green coffee bean I associate with Pomerol. Some smokiness, a bit of the '03 praline quality, oak/vanillin and a touch of heat and very light volatility -- but, nothing offensive. Savory and round on the palate, but less generous than the nose might suggest. Light on the palate. While I have always really liked the complexity on the nose of this wine, I'd be nervous about holding this too long. I liked it more on release.

I wasn't sure what to expect, because I'm not a fan of 03, but I had heard a lot about this wine. Perfect fill, perfect cork. On opening, the nose was a little bretty and leathery, the attack was clean but simple, the finish reasonably long but no more. CB standard. It took six hours to fully open up, with classic Pauillac notes of cigar box cedar and cassis on the nose and a rich, soaring middle section, with a long, classic finish. I'm not a massive scoring fan, but in my head the score began at 88 and rose steadily throughout the evening. On the one hand, the colour is starting to brick and the wine has a medium body, but on the other, the evolution makes me think that this has 5 and possibly 10 years left, maybe even more. Very enjoyable indeed.

This was one of 8 bottles at a Northern Left Bank Bordeaux tasting at a dinner last night. It was a diversified group of wines. No First Growths.....all 2nd or 3rd growths. This was the favorite offering. It is in a great drinking window at present. Does not seem it can improve from here, but has a lot of life left. It was decanted for 2+ hours. My judgment is this wine is undervalued in the auction current auction market.

Nose: Knockout nose of violets, cedar, blackberry, blueberry, tobacco and sweet oak. Well integrated and perfumed offering lots of complexity right now. Palate: Enters with dense blackberry and cassis notes, then gets a nice sweet barnyard, graphite, tobacco and floral sense. Well composed showing no heat of the vintage. Finish: Fresh black fruited notes, anise and mint.
I cannot understate how much I have enjoyed this wine and the level of quality it is offering now. A bit forward, but gives such nice nuance now. If you are a CA drinker looking to explore Bordeaux this is a great place to start.

Nice, evolving nose, a bit of sulfur at first, but blossomed out showing dark fruit and a hint of mint. Tart palate, dark cherry finish, took some time to evolve and fill out the glass too, as it went through a hollow mid-palate phase. Not as overtly ripe as most '03s.

EBLC Does Bordeaux (SLC): Was a little bit disappointed with this bottle. Drank the last one about 2 years ago and this seems to be in the decline. Not as fresh and taste a little bit overripe bordering on syrupy. Just didn't have the acid structure to balance it out. This tasted older than any of the 2001s. May have been an off bottle, but no obvious notes of a flaw.
This bottle was not over the hill nor was it dried out, as recent tasters have reported. Rich red fruit, nicely structured w fine grained tannins. Balanced tannins & acid. Aromatic. Probably at its peak, not yet heading down hill.

first bottle in summer '17 was great (94). full bodied and powerfull, top with grilled tenderloin. second tried now, was disappointing, showing very closed and tannic, almost austere. did not improve with longer decanting, in the contrary - dried even more out (81). maybe the wine will "come back" one day ? or was it just a bottle that got too much air (even though no signs or smell of oxydation) ? based on other 2003s, I would not put high hopes on this one, anymore.

Eeeeenteresting. Some of the characteristics from my note from a dozen years ago are still here. In the intervening period Parker gave this a major "upgrade" to the tune of 96 points or something like that, and it has indeed developed very well and seems to be among the more successful 2003s. It pours out a vibrant ruby color though the taste at first is bizarrely hollow considering the color and aromatics. Air and the warmup from cellar temperature fleshes it out nicely and it picks up deep blackberry flavors with a nuttiness that segues to the more customary cedar shavings and a twist of raisined sur-maturité on the back end that gives away the vintage. It's a fatter wine than Duhart usually is, not sure it will ever be as classy (or pull off the Petite Lafite personality) as the 1995 or 1996, but no doubt it has more richness and stuffing so maybe there will be a different kind of payoff.

“Bordeaux 1959 – 2014 (blind)”, flight 6, wine 1. The wine was medium ruby in colour and had a classic if slightly undefined nose of red and dark fruit, floral notes, cedar and spices. In the nose, this was super cool, minty, fresh, very elegant, quite floral, fairly light, dancing around like a prima-ballerina on its light feet, airy, but then also with some caramelly toffee as well as licorice notes that give the wine some depth. In the mouth, it was subtle, well balanced, very fine in its tannins, fairly light, more red than black fruited, quite classic.

I really enjoyed this wine and can't wait to purchase more! Still strong hints of oak and the nose was strong with cedar and tobacco. It really opened up after a two hour bottle decant.

i know this vintage is maligned for being too hot and thus the wines are too big - but my wife and I loved this. amazing nose of tobacco, herbs - dark and inky - long legs - def more fruit and intensity with typical bordeaux acidity - a gorgeous wine.

Showing as well as my last 2 bottles. A very pretty Duhart-Milon that has very classic proportions and a very classy, elegant style. A big-time overachiever in 2003. Love it!

Drinks like a Bordeaux. Nose of plum, cedar, and pencil shaving. On the palate, dark berries with hints of tobacco. Short finish. Nothing bad, just sort of meh.

Quite mature now (much more than 2002 Duhart-Milon), in the nose leather, full and warm. Typical for 2003, not very elegant, a power pack but still integrated. Drink now or during the next 5 years. Points are a question of style, for me 92.

Big surprise. Dark and young looking. Surprisingly open on the nose but VC had opened it at lunch and I was tasting it at 5pm. Very classy and classic Paulliac nose of cassis, cedar, blackberry and spice. Almost a hint of Lafite to be honest! Great freshness and definition on the palate. Balance and length. Can be enjoyed now and very pleased I picked these up at sub-$50/bt.
Very Pauliac with polished glossy tannins & lovely rich cherry, forest fruits. Little to complain about here. Ready for business with plenty of life but probably not going to get better. Decent finish with a tad of the 2003's about it.

A hint of rust in the color but still mostly ruby red. The nose is very smokey with hints of that Classic paulliac nose. Great complexity on the nose each sent picks up something new that's earthy or rocky. Still big tannins on the palate this wine drinks likes it's very young. Not much fruit open right now but still a thick wine that fully coats your palate. Very long finish. Really great only complaint would be a bit more fruit. May let my last bottle of this rest another 5 years.

Valentine's Day Dinner Party Celebration (La Jolla, California): From a well-cellared bottle, this deep ruby/red wine was double-decanted, allowing three hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle. It was then served at a dinner party over a 3-4 hour period. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, it flaunts an attractive bouquet of cassis, anise, graphite, vanilla and tobacco. Medium-bodied and with low acidity, it is a softly tannic wine which shows no heat from its (listed) 13% alcohol. The oak is well-integrated and the middle palate is nicely dense. Closing long and smooth, this remains a joy to drink. While likely on plateau, there is enough stuffing here to ensure enjoyment for at least another five years. Drink now-2021.

Dark ruby red with no reflexes. Once again the bouquet a brilliant, blackberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants, graphite, cedar, blueberry and tobacco.
On the palate, very dense, great elegance, structure and finesse, supple and silky tannins nice, very good acidity. Lots of fruit flavors, very harmonious, has a very nice balance, blackberries, red and black currants, cedar and graphite again, a medium body and tobacco. A long finish with cedar, graphite, tobacco and blackberries.
A great wine.

Opened another 75cl bottle as it was to my surprise slightly leaking. None of the other bottles from the same case sitting in our cellar for quite some time had this problem. Under the foil the top of the cork was wet but the cork as such was not soaked. Anyway, the wine did not seem affected. Still this was the least convincing showing of this wine over the last 4 years as I see even more pronounced now a certain imbalance on the palate with the fruit gradually fading a mix of earthy flavors, toasted oak and coffee dominates. Integrated tannins and medium finish but this was so much better 2 years ago. Need to find an occasion to drink my last magnum soon

Not drinkable upon PnP. Some red fruit on the nose after a few hour decanting, but not improving on the palate. I thought it was a bad bottle and opened another one. And it was identical! Instead pouring them into the drain where I thought they belonged, I happen to have room left in the fridge and left them there overnight.
They barely improved on 2nd day, but I did see some hope as I managed to sip a few glasses.
Finally it came together a little on day 3. Red fruit with decent dose of spice. Swiveling will bring out more peppery nose. Pleasant Oak and vanilla are also present. It is quite delicate with medium finish.
A tough wine to figure out. Still some gritty tannins but hints of the fruit being burnt and perhaps falling apart early the way some 2003s do. This wine is in a place right now where it is hard to tell whether it will get appreciably better or worse within a few years, but it is likely do one or the other.

A solid earth infused wine that behaves very much like a pomerol rather than a Paulliac....Whopping noes of forrest bottom, tree bark, truffle, and coffee..In the mouth its a funky chocolate with a long, dry, powerful finish full of good grip. Very bugandian in style...medium bodied...no signs of 2003 myths...Mature, ready, and at peak. If blind, I would say a Tortanoy or a Lefleur Petrus..Yes, that good of a Bordeaux....Oh, it needs 1 hr or more decanting.... Drink or Hold...

Opened by Mark. Splash decanted and served. Garnet color. Licorice and pencil shavings on the nose. Notes of plum, oak and underbrush. Smooth texture. The least tannic of the 3 bordeaux opened. 2nd time I have had this wine with consistent notes. 89 points.

Opened after a 2005 Boyd Cantenac since we had some thirsty guests at home and I knew from experience this would work great pnp. And so it did again. From 750s this wine has left it's primary fruit phase clearly behind and is fully mature now with beautiful secondary and tertiary complexity on the smooth palate. Good length too. Great to drink on its own. A solid 93 and need to find a good occasion to also finish my remaining magnum of this.

Second bottle in two days: Decanted and poured immediately. Sediment and color the same as the previous bottle. Nose of dark fruit, as before, but I'm not getting the tobacco (trying both bottles side by side). On the palate, I have more dark fruit and less bell pepper and coffee; acids and finish about the same, and the second bottle is quite a bit better overall. So apparently, I enjoyed the trip to the beach more than the first bottle of wine did. However, I still don't think this is a great wine, but I'll up my score from 80 to 89.

Double decanted; moderate sediment. First pour one hour later. A hint of browning at the edges of a medium ruby color. Flowery nose of dark fruit and tobacco. Medium bodied with more coffee and bell pepper on the palate than fruit. Ample acids and a long finish with smooth tannins. However, I'd enjoy this far more with more fruit on the palate, and if all the parts seemed to fit together better. Overall, this wine is not for me. But I'll taste agaian tomorrow and see if anything better develops. Day 2: Still out of whack. Then it occurred to me that this particular bottle had been taken to a Florida beach last week, but brought back home unopened. On the return trip the car was parked for a couple of hours in the sun, and the off taste may have been the result of being cooked in the car.
First of a case. Decanted for 1/2 hour. Very little sediment. This is a classic Pauillac. It has all the scents and flavors one hears about in a fine Bordeaux - cigar box, graphite, cassis, etc, etc. Not over ripe. Medium bodied and elegant. Vibrant berry fruit with a balancing bell pepper vegetal taste in the middle and perfect acidity. 45 second aftertaste. Near or at peak but should go another decade no problem. Loved it!

My eight bottle over the last 3 years. The 03 Duhart is a wine that has never disappointed me, and in my eyes probably still constitutes the best value and ready to drink Pauillac in the $60-100 range. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours. The wine is open almost from pulling the cork but needs about 1h to gain beautiful complexity with herbs and spices. The fruit has none of the overripeness of the vintage, which I not only get in the more southern parts of Medoc in 2003 but also for example in both Barons in this vintage. Nice medium to long finish. If there is one thing to criticize is that the coffee notes from the barrel toast have been getting more prominent over the last few years if anything, and the hope that the fruit would fully absorb them does not seem realistic anymore. Will try to drink most of my remaining bottles over the next 2-3 years as I don't think this will get any better.

We decanted this bottle for two hours. This was less enjoyable than I had been expecting.
The nose was nice, with a combination of dark fruit, lead, and light earth. The palate was not consistent with the nose. Even several hours in, the wine was dominated by spices, pepper, and some degree of green vegetables. The finish is long and the tannins are behaving well for a 12 year old wine. I was hoping for either more fruit on the palate, or more refined and elegant taste as it evolved in the glass.
We have a few bottles left, so perhaps the next one will be better.

Decanted 2 hours in the cellar. Absolutely delicious. Complex flavors and the wine hit every taste bud. Long finish. Finish leaned toward dry vs sweet (the wine may not have warmed to room temperature, which may have prevented the ripeness of the vintage from taking over).

This is open and fully ready to drink. Lush, soft, and a bit sweet. Easy drinking. Kind of mushy for Bordeaux, but enjoyable. Not sure this is built for the long haul or for the BDX classicist.

First bottle of a case. Bought on the basis of some glowing recent CT notes (and consequent 3 hour decant) and Parker's 2014 assessment. I was worried about other professional reviews hinting at some heat and atypical spice. During my first sip (and presumably their only) both these aspects were admittedly slightly noticeable - if one was looking as hard as I was. Even so I couldn't stop a smile spreading across my face as I simultaneously realised that I was absolutely delighted with my purchase. The subsequent glasses only reaffirmed my initial opinion: this is a fantastic claret which cannot fail to disappoint all but the most ardent classicists. The alcohol is almost completely disguised after the first mouthful (and I am particularly sensitive to heat) and the tannins are managed as smoothly as one would hope for in a good cru classé. If one were to pick holes then perhaps it does not completely coat one's tongue but for me this is another example of the wonderful stage some of the 2003 clarets are currently at. I would say though that the last glass was certainly no better than the first, so future improvements seem unlikely. Enjoy, enormously, over the next few years.

A very pretty wine and it that we shouldn't generalize about vintages... Pretty dark garnet/purple color. Beautiful nose of dark fruit (blueberries, black currant), sweet toasted oak and some graphite and tobacco. On the palate there are again plenty of dark fruits (blueberries, some dark cherries and cassis/black currant) as well as some oaky spicyness, a touch of dark chocolate and some lead pencil/graphite as well as a some herbs. Medium-full-bodied and dense without being heavy, with medium acidity and medium+ tannin that is perfectly ripe. Medium finish. Once again I was very impressed about the 2003 Duhart-Milon... There is no heat or alcohol recocnizable... it's very balanced and classic in structure but with an extra level of richness due to the vintage. Beautiful! It can still age for a few more years too.

This is a great claret no doubt. However, I was expecting a little more fruit concentration given the overripe 2003 vintage. It is a medium bodied claret that is already fully mature with secondary notes of cedar shavings, cigar tobacco, licorice, touch of leather & graphite, and sweet and silly smooth tannin. Classic Pauillac. If it had more stuffing and fruit, I would have given it a higher score. It will hold for 5 more years, but probably won't get any better than it is now. Drink up!

Absolutely gorgeous after a 3 hour decant. Dark and rich but very lively fruit, definitely masculine but not quite as dark as the Les Forts de Latour drunk beside it. It has stronger sweeter fruit than the Latour, which at this point makes this a slightly better wine overall. Don't be shy to drink this, but it'll hold a while.

Second Sunday Group: Produttori del Barbaresco Riservas (L's): Popped & poured. Much darker than the 2001, despite just two years difference in age. More dark fruit than the 2001 as well, with black currant and cassis and perfumed floral overtones. Adds a terrific earthy quality after an hour or so, but remains very pretty with dark fruit and floral tones on the nose and palate. Has plenty of life ahead, but is already very good.

Deep ruby/red and highly aromatic, this blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot has a beautiful bouquet of cassis, anise, graphite, vanilla and espresso. Medium-bodied, round, softly tannic and with unnoticeable alcohol (13%), it follows with flavors which mirror the nose. The oak is well-integrated and the middle palate is solid. Closing long and smooth, this is a joy to drink! It is likely at its best but well-cellared bottles should hold up nicely over the next five years. Drink now-2020.

Barnyard and horse blanket dominate the nose, with currant and cranberry hiding underneath. Palate leads with tart cranberry, with some sweeter wild berry notes and a hint of mineral/wet rock. Very musty. Fine tannin. All in all, pretty boring. A disappointing bottle.

The 2003 Duhart Milon sports a ruby appearance, lighter than both the Malescot and Barton. Aromatics of cassis, pencil lead, cedar, forest floor are easy to spot, quite gentle and comforting. On the palate, very well balanced, fresh, filled with black and red fruits, smokey taste. Good amount of acidity, fine powdery tannins, medium finish. Although a bit linear in nature, this is a very well made 2003, and excellent with food.

Opened and poured down to the shoulder to let slow ox for about an hour before having with penne and marinara with sausage. Consumed over the next 4 hours. Aroma is barnyard and mushroom along with a hint of tea, with a moderate level of dark berries. The flavors are pretty well integrated with the earthiness and berries coming together. I thought there might be some hotness or ripe fruit based on hearing things about the vintage, but there was none whatsoever.

Unsure of the provenance of this bottle, so take the following with a grain of salt: As enjoyable, and bright as others detail, but not seeing the structure for anything beyond short/mid-term cellaring. Tonight's bottle was aerated to decanter for 3 hours, returned to bottle and served 4 hours later. The last glass struggled on the finish, though all glasses prior were a joy. Medium-bodied, precise, with tell-tale Pauillac aromas and flavors. Excellent food wine. Drink thru 2019. recommended
Served non-blind.

A Chinese dinner: Double decanted 75cl bottle briefly, and took to restaurant. Consistent notes with the magnum opened a few months ago. Great success for Duhart Milon in this difficult vintage, and in my eyes the best deal among 2003 Bordeaux.

Medium ruby. Expressive nose of typical Medoc scents around forest floor, barnyard, cedar wood red and black fruit. The wine is really well balanced with good fruit, no drying tannins and enough freshness. Also aromatically complex, not just sweet like so many wines of this vintage. One of the best 2003 (an over-hyped yet terrible vintage) I had. Fully ready to drink now and a real pleasure.

Although this has been in my cellar for six years, there was not any sediment in the bottle. This is a modern claret, and is not much like the wines of fifty years ago. Nose reminiscent of cigar box, but it is not very intense. Tannins fully resolved, some acid backbone, not fruit forward, no heat - doesn't show any effects of a hot year, but alcohol is evident. Medium finish, smooth, but nothing special. Color very deep garnet. no orange or brown. This bottle was opened two hours before dinner and was decanted with aerating, but that was unnecessary. I'm pretty much resigned to not finding any French clarets that are made the way they were made fifty years ago and produce such enjoyment. You had to decant a ten year old bottle from any halfway decent vintage because there would be a half inch of sediment in the bottle. And the nose and mouthfeel are practically gone. I still remember wines from '62 and '66 that had a nose that you could continue to enjoy after your glass was drained. When you opened the bottle, even a third growth's bouquet would be evident immediately. But, for such a decent vintage and chateaux, this was a disappointment. If you like the modern style bordeaux you may like this. I know why my son does not hold bordeaux in high regard. In my mind this bottle was worth maybe $15, definitely not $75.
Intensive Cassis-, Beerenfrucht-, Würzaromen, Eiche, etwas verbrannt, Mentholnote; am Gaumen mittlerer Körper, sehr klar, sehr elegant ausbalanciert und sehr trinkig, feines Tannin, langer weicher Abgang

Double-decanted (with four hours of aeration prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle), this wine was presented to our tasting group in double-blind fashion. My taste was non-blind. Deep ruby/red and very aromatic, it flaunts an intense nose of crème de cassis, anise, crushed rocks, espresso and vanilla bean. Medium-bodied, round, softly tannic and with nicely integrated alcohol (13%), it delivers similar flavors as for the nose, framed by a judicious amount of oak. Nicely layered and building on the mid-palate, it concludes with a velvety, long finish. This 2003 is nothing short of gorgeous at this point. Undoubtedly on plateau, it should be at its best over the next 5-6 years. Drink now-2020.

The nose was a harbinger of what we found on the palate. This is a powerful wine with a tannic structure. Red berry fruit, earthy, gamey, and definitely a food wine. I loved it when I first tasted it, but it blossomed when enjoyed with dinner of a delicious and fatty rib cap. It is a reminder that I love Bordeaux.

Shame that this is the last one I have. Really captivating, lush almost creamy on the palate. This is one of those Bordeaux that a non-Bordeaux lover would like; it's so charming and accessible. One of my favorite if not my favorite from the '03 Bordeaux vintage.

This is one of my favourite Chateaux. The 2003, although enjoyable, is exhibiting similar characteristics to the other 2003s I have tried - slight overcooked upfront flavour, and slightly dry on the aftertaste. It is generally balanced and enjoyable however and very much 'a point' at the moment but it seems to be lacking the usual depth and complexity you get with this wine.

Took magnum to office and unlike my last 75Cl bottle two years, this is now ready to drink even from magnum format upon pulling the cork. Still my favourite 2003 Bdx, no overripe flavors at all, compact dark fruit, some barnyard on the nose, a bit of coffee. All in great balance. Would have loved to see this evolve with a bit of air but the bottle was gone in 30 min with a lot of praise from everybody

Note from memory from a few weeks back. Bottle decanted for 4 hours, consumed over 2 hours. Drinking very well right now. Tannins nicely integrated with well balanced acidity. The '03 Duhart is absolutely singing right now. Open an hour the nose here is very complex and showy with aromas of anise and currants; this is not a wine with your straightforward raspberry and cherry fruit. So much class, especially considering the extremely warm vintage and the real genius here is this comes off as classic Bordeaux and not a new world wine. Having said that, this Duhart is full and so warm and enveloping. The oak is noticeable but well integrated. With time a touch of mint and bay leaf make an appearance and since I'm at it I'll mention the charming fungal forest floor aspect as well. Dare I say somewhat rustic? I noticed as I poured the wine the color is starting to oxidize a bit and I must say I think this has peaked and will remain on a brilliant plateau for the next four to five years. I see no point in drinking this after Spring, 2019 as the tannins are soft and velvety and all parts are integrated. Very good wine.

Dark ruby color with no maturity reflexes. The bouquet is a brilliant prelude: blackberries, red and black currants, graphite, cedar, later blueberries and tobacco in the background. Such a great bouquet I had with a Duhart-Milon has not yet been in the glass. On the palate a dense material, shows a lot of elegance, structure and finesse, beautiful silky tannin-acid fruit play on the tongue, very nice balance, harmony, blackberries, red and black currants, back graphite and cedar, a medium until full body and tobacco. A long finish with, cedar, graphite, tobacco and blackberries. Excellent wine!!

Not overblown for a 2003. Blackcurrant fruit with some tar and oak; obviously from a hot year but not marred by it. This gained balance with air and will improve over the next five years - at least.

Nose: smoke, pencil, cherry, cassis and roasted plum. Palate: blackberry, plum sauce, smoke, glycerine, pencil and cigar. Finish: long persistant and driving with classic paulliac notes.
Although this is a large scaled wine with a new world palate feel and rich ripe fruit, it never loses its sense of place or the markers of its vineyard. Very impressive and there are many years to go for this great Duhart Milon

Small Coravin session @ home. Pretty dark garnet/purple color. Jumps out of the glass with dark fruit (blueberries, black currant), sweet toasted oak and some graphite and tobacco. On the palate there are again plenty of dark fruits (blueberries, some dark cherries and cassis/black currant) as well as some oaky spicyness, a touch of dark chocolate and some lead pencil/graphite as well as a touch of herbs. Full-bodied and dense without being heavy, with medium acidity and medium tannin that is perfectly ripe. Medium finish. I was never the biggest fan of Duhart-Milon but they hit it out of the park with their 2003. It's full-bodied and opulent, but very balanced and doesn't have any sur-maturité or oxidative notes like many other in that vintage.
Drinking very nicely now. Won't hurt if you wait a bit but you won't be disappointed if you open it now. Medium bodied, mature fruit and nicely integrated tannins.

Assez léger et fin, à boire! Nez sur les feuilles, la terre humide et les cerises. En bouche, tannins fondus et sur le tertiaire avec encore un peu de fruit. Se boit bien tout de même.
Decanted for two hours and drank over another two with Christmas prime rib roast dinner. Started out with earth and barnyard aromas with plum and black cherry flavors. Coffee, cedar, cigar, and floral aromas eventually took over. Flavors then dominated by ripened dark fruits. Tannins were very mild. Long finish (45+ seconds) with very distinct notes of raisins, dried herbs and toasted oak.

Decanted for 1 hour, drank over 3 hrs. It was one-dimensional for the first 2 hours but opened up after that. Great structure and acidity from beginning to end. This is a wine that does not characterized the rumors of the vintage (overripe, no structure, early drinking, etc). I am positive this will fool a lot of people blind. This is a great wine that is just beginning to develop. And finishes with great length and freshness. Oh, how I wish I had more of this.

Animal brawn! Dark red, with a bit of purple. Smokey nose of rich fruit, a bit of coffee grounds (typical for vintage), some spice. Very big in the mouth, lots of fruit and a gamey animal side. It's got great mouth feel. Rich as hell, lovely, maybe a bit hard at the end. I'm guessing it could use 5 more years to peak and will last a lot longer than that.

Initially opaque in color and closed - we popped and poured which was unfortunate. The cab came thru very clearly after some time and after an hour this finally opened for business. I will hopefully read my notes and decant the next one and wait a few years. This has a decade to go.

Did not decant but drank it over a few hours. Quite different than the 2004 we had last year. This had a unique nose of smoked salmon that carried through to the palate. There was also some nice fruit and a similar silky smooth mouth feel to the 2004. Went nicely with roast beef dinner. No hurry to drink my last bottle.

Deep, dense, smooth, creamy and rich without being sweet. Burnt oak is fairly resolved. Pine, espresso, bitter nut, menthol herbs. Strong and muscular wine. Long dark bitter finish. A very nice wine that is ready to drink but I think there is some more openness ahead. B+

Had with escargot and duck - is ready to drink, took perhaps 45 minutes to open, still on the young side, no sign of harm from the very warm year, will probably wait another 3 years or so to open the 2nd of my 3 bottles wishing I'd bought a few more as this was a good value

Smoky haunting nose with earthy barn, sous bois, coffee liqueur, cassis; rich, full bodied, wet earth and clay mixed with dark berries and coffee bean. Fantastic, rich, plush, medium acidity, but complex and brooding. '03 stand out IMHO.

My first bottle of bordeux. Full bodied, ripe but not overdone to my tastes. Cedar, plum. Good structure. Yum. As a sign of commitment this saw me purchase from 2009 and 2009.
Took 4 hours of decant to open up when we already finished half the bottle. Medium to full bodied. Leather, chocolate and dark fruits with a long after taste. This wine should improve in a few more years. Need patience. 93+ points.

This wine is in a good spot right now. Smooth, nice texture and nice flavors ... though young and more primary fruits, the tannins seemed pretty well resolved. I dont know that these will get markedly better, but not in any rush to drink either.

Very dark, almost opaque, dirty dark cherry rim. Intense aromas of warm fruit, plums, fried bacon, mushrooms. More Rhone-like than Bdx actually. Med+ body, mineral, savoury, moderately complex. Quite soft yet structured. Some prunes on the palate, interesting spiciness. Charcoal, dark fruit and brine in the aftertaste, quite long. Very atypical.

Two and a half hours in a medium decanter. At first, medium bodied, but not so much taste nor smell. Gained weight after an hour of drinking. It became full bodied which is always pleasent.

Vinetasters-2003 Bordeaux (Holiday Inn, Niles IL): Nose: The nose is a bit angular with some rich tones of coffee beans, black currants, kirsch, oak, and black cherries. This is also lacking some depth, but the tones aren't entirely surface tones.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with some hard tannins. The feel is a bit coarse with tones of coffee beans, black currants, kirsch, wood spices, and oak tones.
Overall: This was my no.8. This bottle came off on the harder side to where it would is hard to tell if it will ever come together.

Very good quality Pauillac with medium ruby color, showing a fairly intense and complex nose of blackcurrant, blackberry and bilberry, cocoa and chocolate, liquorice, tobacco and savory, meaty, cedar and caramel, and earth. Very well-balanced, with the acidity supporting the ripe, velvety tannin. The wine is fairly full-bodied, with fairly intense palate also showing flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and bilberry, cedar, liquorice, cigar box and pencil lead. A fairly long finish, it is ready to drink now though can benefit from further ageing of another 5-8 years.

All of a sudden this bottle is gloriously endowed with rich fruit notes. Greenblanket's previous bottles have been more about cedar and earth and mineral and now this. Unexpected but more in balance and delicious. Just shows to go you that Greenblanket is a junior jerk when it comes to Bordeaux.

Thin and sour upon opening, this gains weight and improves massively after a 2h decant. Dark garnet, earth and some barnyard, dark fruit, leather, coffee. Continues to be in a great place to drink, as there is still enough fruit to entirely cover the tannins (unlike the recent 03 Lagrange). Great wine even if the finish could be longer. 92-93

Cellar Diminishment Party (M/M thelostverse): First bottle from a case. Aromas of black fruit, earth and florals. Tight- dark fruit with a slightly acidic edge. Opened nicely during the evening though- fruit and earth qualities.

My first bottle of this wine. Really nice nose of cassis and dark cherry fruits with earth, mineral, tobacco, oak and a pleasant dose of Bordeaux funk. Based on the nose I expected a lush, rich, fruity wine and what I got was a lot of fruit with some complexity, but also a wall of oak, structure and rough tannins. Full bodied and concentrated with a medium finish. Mellowed over the 3 hours it was open, but never enough to really smooth out the texture. I will wait 2-3 years for my next one. Probably a 90-91 now with upside to 93-94 if it integrates and mellows.

It's still an 03 but this bottle is in a much more "classic" place with dark fruit, gravelly earth and some tobacco. Great with the lamb. There's definitely hope here.

45 min decant but needs at least 1-2h to open up. Dark garnet with slight browning and lightening at the rim, initially reserved nose of dark fruit becomes more and more earthy in the decanter, there is also a touch of barnyard, medium to full body with plum and other dark fruit and again plenty of earth, even though there are no noticeable tannins this is not jammy (or overripe) as there is enough acidity, medium finish. Would give the nose a 94, and very nice overall at 92-93

A deep ruby colour but no purple edging gave initial hints that this might be ready for business. Had 4+ hours in the decanted and needed it I think as it continued to improve with airtime. Rich red fruits were initially a little subdued, some pencil lead and cigar box but not "classic". Opened up a bit more over time, still some tannin to be integrated but not harsh by any means and plenty of oomph in the overall taste and texture. No real standout 2003 attributes. Highly enjoyable if a little, just a little, unexceptional at times. Going to be interesting to try again in a few years.

Decanter Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Masterclass (Landmark Hotel London): Medium deep garnet. Nose maturing and expressive with coffee liqueur, caramel, cedar, chocolate, cedar and plummy fruit. Fantastic! Palate with depth of flavour, sweet, savoury and firm. Very long, elegant with firm but ripe tannins, medium + weight and refreshing acidity. Excellent wine elegant and refined but with a touch of wildness to it...

Definitely ready. Starts off as a slightly backward minerally Bordeaux but after a day evolves more fruit, tasting like a California cab. Weird progression but so much going on in all departments.

Opened about an hour before drinking. Caught a whiff of TCH when I pulled the cork and on first taste but that faded away after awhile. Also a lot of barnyard on the nose for a Paulliac. Very enjoyable wine. A looked leaner than I expected for a 2003. Drank with several kinds of grilled steaks. Doesn't get much better.

Super wine, perfectly ready to drink now. A very expressive and smoky nose, almost explosive: dark fruits, dark chocolate. Soft and silky tannins, round on the palate with a final touch of vanilla. Still has a good acidity. Very well balanced. Good for another few years for sure.

Decanted for an hour. Started off with classic bordeaux flavors. Became more fruity over 2 hours. Then, became more rustic towards the end. A wonderful wine and it had a finish I loved that 'high end' bordeaux have.

Only have one of these and decided to give it a whirl. Decanted for about 2 hours before dinner. Pretty open all the way through but the decant did help. Nice aromas of lead pencil, minerals and fruit. The palate shows balanced red fruit flavors intermixed with a mineraliness, pepper and tobacco flavors. A nice suave texture and persistent finish. I wonder if I can find more of these for under $50. Paid $37 and that was a steal!

At Bern's in Tampa. Just popped an 03 Duhart-Milon($100). Thought it would need a decant but immediately hit our nose w/rasberry topped creme brûlée. Medeium bodied claret with smooth tannins, soft red fruit, casis and earth on the palate. 30 second Finnish. Very nice. We may have to order a second bottle.

Beginning to peek out from it's infancy, this gem will delight those with patience and restraint. A complex array of aromas waft from the glass filled with smoke, blackberry, coffee and menthol. Still tight, clutching hard, it will be a few years before this baby gives up it's best. Flavors of black fruit, mushrooms and cedar box dominate at this point. Waiting a few more years would be prudent.

This is good! Upon opening, color was garnet with pepper on the nose plus a faint blackberry jam. On the palate, the wine was soft with medium body, acid then tannins in balance. 30 second finish.
After 4 hours in the decanter, the blackberry jam was more pronounced and the pepper was secondary. Long finish, weighty mouthfeel. Acid & tannins more integrated.
Several tasters think this wine is still improving. If so, this will be an outstanding wine in the future.

Nice, dark colour. At the beginning the nose is dominated by leather, wood and toasty notes, but with time the fruit becomes stronger and evolved aromas of wild berries and plum tart. A full bodied wine with a good tannin structure; much of earthy notes, wood and a bit of coffee and chocolate. After 24 h the juicy fruit of wild berries becomes stronger and the wine finds its balance. Silky on the palate.

Consistent with my prior note over 2 years ago. I don't think the wine has progressed much in this time. A good nose with a definite barnyard bouquet. Medium weight on the palate with nice fruit, earth and light oak. Finish is medium. A good food wine.

Very good fruit, not overripe (unlike some 03s), medium bodied mid-palate, and 30 sec finish. Quite nice, but would not have placed it as a Pauillac were it served blind.

Mix of earth and tart cherries. It was almost perfumed and ever so slightly minty. Depth emerged over time; the nose completely changed into an almost syrupy blend of molasses, coffee and root vegetables. Interesting. At times, a pronounced smokiness dominated, but it was transient enough to allowed other nuances to share the stage. The attack was tart, and the mid palate was earthy. Perhaps this could use more fruit, but I really wouldn't need the fruit if the slight bitterness on mid palate and the finish would disappear. This wine is worth a taste.

We opened all three legs of the Holy Trinity in honor of the 'Old World' Brother In Law. This wine represents the second leg - Duhart. I keep waiting for this wine to come all the way together but, once again, not this time - there's less fruit and more notes of cedar, mushroom-y soil and minerals - but still not quite the balance that I'm looking for. Excellent.

Dark garnet red. Dark plums, black pepper, cedar, coffee, pencil shavings, and spice on the nose. Notes of juicy ripe plum, pencil lead, and spiced wood in an earth, coffee, and tobacco structure. The pencil lead and spice, with a bit of plum, linger on in the 45+ second finish. Somewhat silky mouth-feel, VERY smooth. This is one of those rare and wonderful wines that gives you a very strange, almost narcotic buzz after just a few sips.
EDIT: This wine needs at least two hours to fully open up. I thought it was phenomenal before it was completely open, but in returning to the last glass noticed that it had really come alive. I upped my score from a 94 to a 95.

Lovely bouquet; flowers, perfume, red and black berries, mocha and earthy notes. Soft, supple, well integrated tannins and a reasonable finish. Well made, not classic Bordeaux by any means, but a well produced wine in this non-classic vintage.
taste: very good medium/full body with rich tannins and balanced tones of pencil lead, cedar, dark red berries, dark red fruits, some red cherries and tobacco tones
overall: this got about an hour or so of decanting and probably could've used more. Needs some more time to fully come together, but holds the vintage well and has a good intensity to it without being overdone

Coffee tones dominate the surprising but one-dimensional nose. Not a fruit-driven wine upon opening or after 24 hours of air for the second half of the bottle. Toffee, coffee, tobacco; nice density; not overly tannic. A well-made curiosity.

Espresso roast, pipe smoke, dark plum - a really pretty and expressive nose. Much rounder fuller, and slightly sweeter than the 02 LB with a weightier mouthfeel, but without the tight focus and intensity. The finish is a bit clipped, but this is quite pleasurable already. I'm confident that this has additional upside.

Wow...impressive showing. Double decanted 4 hours before drinking. Intoxicating nose full of tobacco, anise, cedar and black fruits. Full bodied, dense palate adds touches of lead pencil and herbs. This is a REALLY smooth drinking Pauillac. At the end of the first glass I detect a faint musty aroma that raises an eyebrow. By the time I get to the second glass, it's pretty clear that the wine is slightly corked, which would explain the withdrawn fruit on the palate and somewhat clipped finish. However, because of that first glass, this is one of the few times that I've thoroughly enjoyed a wine I thought was corked. Great pairing with herb crusted rack of lamb and potato fennel puree. 93+? points. A flawless bottle would have been even better.

This wine displays a fabulous nose of coffee. I absolutely love this wine... so much so that I went on line and ordered two more cases. Great midpalate and long finish. It displays the best of the left bank with loads of cassis and black fruit. I like it much much better than the more highly rated 2005. The 2003 is ethereal.

BWE does Manhattan: a 1996 & 2003 Bordeaux Retrospective: WINE #3: Tasted single blind in a flight of three with 2003 Sociando-Mallet and Pontet-Canet... Initially some lactic notes on the bouquet, this blew off into a terrific, and I may say, pretty classic young Bordeaux bouquet of ripe cassis and classy French oak. Wonderful palate, with excellent concentration and grip. I guessed the Pontet-Canet. My favorite of the flight.

Korean barbecue at the "Old World" Brother In Law's place. A swell plan for the evening; Greenblanket brings the meat and the marinade and then gets to choose the wine from the great man's cellar. This one was for after dinner. We followed it over four hours and it is definitely approaching a drinking zone. The bouquet was lovely with all of the usual suspects now starting to pull in the same direction; black currant, muted pencil shavings, tobacco, gravel and a wonderful suite of earthy sous bois notes. All of these followed on a well balanced palate that finished with black fruit and floral notes. Greenblanket is very happy about this showing but still to plans sit on his bottles for a few more years.

This wine seemed to be in a bit of a jaggedy, disjointed place with a nose dominated by coffee and oaky cedar. Much of the previously encountered sweet black fruit is gone or in hiding. A well structured and balanced palate showed up on day two offering currants, cigar tobacco and gravelly earth. Is this on a journey to a better place?

Color is dark garnet to the rim. Nose shows dark cassis, leather, pencil lead, and earth. The palate reveals velvety dark currant, chewy tannins, and a good streak of acidity to keep it balanced. This has a way to go...I almost feel bad opening it early, but it sure is good.

Opened not decanted. Served blind at an offline. One of the most seductive noses I've ever encountered. It was like a fragrant cold drink of chocolate.and toffee Unfortunately, it was also one of the worst tasting experiences I've also ever encountered:flat with no acid, no middle and no finish. You're looking for something lively and it was just dead. Heat damaged? Undrinkable.

Consumed at Perilla in NYC with Capilouto, Oyster and Lilly. Decanted for 1 hour plus and paired with Chef Harold Dieterle's amazing cuisine. The nose was 96+ with an amazing burst of earth, black fruit and pencil lead. In the mouth a very earthy wine that is smooth and rich with a touch of oak. With a bit more fruit this would be a blockbuster. The paired brilliantly with the hanger steak and was loved by all.

Wow, this is wine is really accessible right now! Will it stay like this? It is a Bordeaux in a Californian style. Totally atypical for a Bordeaux, but typical for this very warm vintage. It's a wine for people that don't find Bordeaux hedonistic enough and Californian wines not elegant enough. With other words: this wine is not an intellectual experience, but simply fun to drink!

Way too early to drink, but wanted to crack open a 2003 and see what the future might bring. As JW says, Dynooomite!!! Strong nose of cedar, cigar box and mother earth. Smooth mouthfeel with all the right flavors. Tannins stll need a lot of time to resolve, but the future bodes well for this Badboy. At this pricepoint, I paid $30 a bottle, I should have backed up the truck.

Christmas Eve at the "Old World" Brother In Law's. And that means another chance to check the progress of my wines by drinking from the Great Man's cellar - Merry Christmas indeed. This time around I was a little less impressed with the Duhart. It had a palatable sense of class and elegance with all of the requisite elements in play - deep sweet black currant, cigar box, tobacco, graphite, substantial but softening tannins - but - I was distracted by the wood on this tasting. Maybe it's going through a stage or maybe it's just me but I experienced a streak of unpleasant and unintegrated oak from the mid palate through the finish. Excellent and I look forward to checking in again next holiday season.

Woooooooo---this is NOT your average or even exceptional boxed wine! Enjoyed a couple glasses of this this evening with Thanksgiving meal leftovers. Now that's what I call an awesome Bordeaux nose or better: Cabernet Sauvignon nose! Blackberries, Cigar Box (a lot), Vanilla, leather and some nice (almost Burgundian/Pinot Noir) floral components that bring some freshness to this rather serious and classic wine. What I like about this wine (and Bordeaux in general) is the ability to produce a long finish on the palate without showing the alcohol (so, not Australian at all). From my understanding that's one of the things you would define as elegance or finesse. Downpart of the wine at this point is the young age (of course). The tannins are not harsh in a tongue coating way, but in a bitter way... which I dislike even more... is kinda like chewing on a cigar... in extreme you get this in a lot of South African Pinotages... Still a great experience to drink now, but surely better in 5+ years.

Bordeaux Blind (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Moderate garnet color. High-toned nose of scorched earth that zooms through to the succulent fruit on the palate. Excellent structure. Comments: For me this was the most memorable wine from the tasting because of the unique flavor that was seamless from nose to finish. A brilliant expression of terroir and a wine that I am very happy to have in my cellar. Highly recommended.

Very much a 2003 Bordeaux, this wine is hot, dense, with a dark core. Good structure, good black cherry fruit, lots of mud and tar. I think the heat of the alcohol is a bit much, but otherwise a very nice wine. There is something nice and herbal going on in the higher tones as well, which is a welcome difference from some of the other 2003s. Good restrained sweetness in there too. Doesn't strike me as a long ager, more of a mid-term, due to a lack of biting, strong tannins. Could use a little time in bottle to come together. Very nice for the price in today's Bordeaux market. B/B+

Cabernet Sauvignon (Farpointe Cellar): I really liked the coffee aromas and flavors on this wine. They were very upfront and powerful. The nose also had some raspberry, plum, and vanilla. The palate was very smooth and had the same fruit as the nose, along with some cedar and a little vanilla. The tannins were very firm and the finish nice and long. If you like the smell of coffee, you'll like this one.

Purchased after the Binny's tasting and taken to dinner at Mykha's with some of the CWM. Not decanted, but it may not have helped much. This has closed down considerably since my last bottle...there was only some smoky-edged red currant and plum notes/flavors discernable. Still, there was plenty of structure. This will eventually be an oustanding wine, but it's time to forget about these and let them sleep.

Double decanted and returned to the cellar for ninety minutes. Dark red all the way to the rim with an intense bouquet of cassis, cedar, smoke and some tobacco or herbs. The palate had a wonderful black fruit presence that was nicely balanced with smoke, cedar, some pencil lead and fairly big tannins. This wine was tasted with hors devours just before a massive and impressive 98 Quilceda Creek and I thought it was more interesting and just as pleasurable to drink in a different way. Clearly young but also quite approachable and delicious right now.

Served with a selection cheeses. Deep inky/purple color. As I pour this in the decanter, the aroma fills the kitchen. After 1 hour in the decanter, I poured the first glasses. The aromatics are wonderful! Dark fruit, plum, leather and wet earth. Miss AllRed picked up a eucalyptus note, which I completely agree with. The palate, for such a young wine, is amazingly well-integrated. Dark fruit and plum flavors abound, with some cedar and earthy flavors. Modest finish, only a slight tannic bite. 91+ now. Half a bottle was vacuvinned, will report tomorrow, after I go back and get a case. One glass' worth was forgotten about and finally rediscovered, having been vacuvinned and refrigerated for 13 days. No sign of oxidation, the aromas were of soft plum and earth, and the tannins had been completely resolved. Very silky mouthfeel, with plum and blackberry flavors.

Dark ruby color. Very reserved at first, with light aromas of cedar and coffee, restrained black-fruit flavors, and soft but omnipresent tannin. After two hours it becomes more flamboyant to taste (though not to smell), with the fruit acquiring nutty and charred characteristics and becoming more glossy in texture. Moderate tannin perserveres, but overall this is really quite supple.

Intense ruby red.
Update 2 February 2024:
Still in good shape.

89 points.

Want more.

In a really nice place, this had been decanted for an hour and then rebottled, ending up in the first flight a little over two hours after the cork was first pulled. With seven bottles remaining in the cellar I think I may pull a bottle or two each year over the next three to five years.

Finish: long, mouthwatering, somewhat fruity finish. It’s lovely.

Deep cherry red with crimson color on the rim.

Great complexity on the nose each sent picks up something new that's earthy or rocky. Still big tannins on the palate this wine drinks likes it's very young. Not much fruit open right now but still a thick wine that fully coats your palate. Very long finish. Really great only complaint would be a bit more fruit.

Drink up!

The 2003, although enjoyable, is exhibiting similar characteristics to the other 2003s I have tried - slight overcooked upfront flavour, and slightly dry on the aftertaste.

First bottle from a case I bought on release.

Awesome nose of coffee, cigar box, and leather. Tastes of blackberries, mocha, and espresso. Fabulous. Will put the rest down to taste in a few years, if we can keep our hands off of them.

This is a great bottle of wine and it is hard to keep our hands off these. Huge nose of tobacco, black fruit and scorched earth. Very smooth drinking with a reasonably long finish. Drank with a nice ribeye cooked on the big green egg. Awesome.

It was truly outstanding with smoke and earth on the nose and a wonderfully long and complex "everything" experience in the mouth. This should last for many, many, many more years and get even better.
