91 Points

Friday, August 9, 2019 - I thought I had pulled out a Costa Grimaldi, but as soon as I tasted it I knew it was the Cannubi because of the tannins. On the first day, this showed cherry and menthol on the nose; on the palate, dark fruit, black tea, menthol, and notes of tar and rose petal, with powerful smooth tannins on the medium to long finish. The fruit was muted compared to the earthy notes, and this seemed largely closed down even after two hours. On the second day, it had opened up and showed more dark fruit, less tannin, and more integration. This is classic old-school Barolo, and it needs much more time to evolve. The Cellartracker drinking window on this is unaccountably early and short. At this stage it should be decanted for several hours, and it may not really open up out of the bottle for five years or more; it will improve for many years after that. This was an amazing bargain on sale at a little over $40, although I wish I had waited longer to open it.
