  • Pleasant, gentle wine, lots of cherry with a modest amount of tar and leather. Easy to drink.

  • Prior bottle was 2 years and 2 months ago and this wine continues to show quite well. Nose was a bit deeper this time with both black and red cherry to go along with the earth, minerals, spices and light leather notes. Between medium and full bodied with a very similar fruit profile to my prior bottles: red and black cherry upfront, deeper black cherry and a touch of black raspberry through the middle with some plum behind. Balanced tannins, acidity, spices and tart cherry on the backside. But it continues to be the elegance and harmony through the middle and the integration on the backside that set this wine apart. Really in a good spot currently, but should be able to hold this level for several more years. This was my final bottle, so really pleased with this showing.

  • Decanted 4 hours.
Opened up to reveal a wonderful bouquet. Cherry, tar, menthol, florals. Medium weighted and balanced, silty tannins, very good length. In a great zone right now.

  • Excellent bottle. Medium-bodied, smooth and complex. Drinking very well with no sign of decline.

  • What a beautiful wine, nicely balanced, medium weight but feather light in mouthfeel. A light tar, cherry and drying berries. Chalky chewy tannins coat the moth. Longish finish.

  • Great wine, punching above its weight and price. I'm greatly enjoying the 04 Barolos these days. They are open and beautiful. RGCM Gananda did an excellent job of describing the flavor profile. Perfect choice with a bolognese pasta.

  • Leather and fruit still has tannin deep in body

  • Prior bottle was nearly 22 months ago (Nov 2019) and my notes were again consistent. Red cherry, leather, light tar/leather and floral note son the nose. Between medium and full bodied with red and black cherry upfront and retaining that mix of open roundness and slightly more tart brightness. Mid-body adds depth along with black cherry, hints of black raspberry and then plum towards the back. After being open for four hours, the mid-body takes on that wonderful sense of elegance that makes Barolos so special. Balanced spices, tannins and acidity contribute structure and it finishes with earth, tar, light leather and mineral qualities. This bottle felt more harmonious, less tight and in better overall balance than my prior bottle. Given where the fruit and structure are and considering the 4 hours it took to open up, I suspect it can continue to improve along these lines. I will save my last bottle until at least late Fall 2022 (perhaps November?) and might choose to hold longer. Drinking beautifully, but no rush.

  • A lot of forest floor on this bottle. Fruit was sort of subdued.

  • Smooth, still some fruit. Good cocktail wine or something to drink with a meal when you don’t want it to over power the food. Only has a couple years left before it starts to turn.

  • Wow...this is all black tea, liquified rose petals, cinnamon, cherry nibs, clove, baking spice, tar and menthol...so gorgeous. Texture is like cashmere...finish is endless. What a fantastic 2004 Cannubi.

  • I purchased nine bottle of this beauty ten years ago. I drank the last one several day's ago. Eight of the nine bottles were fabulous, and the last one was probably over the hill. I will negate bottle number nine because it wasn't properly stored. This is a lush wine with fabulous color and a wonderful bouquet. Fans of Barolo will want to drink this as frequently as possible because bottles this good are a rare find.

  • Opened the bottle around 10:00 am. Poured first glass at 5:00 pm. Extremely dark with great legs. The nose is a bit shy bus shows cherries, raspberries menthol and some smoke. It a bit primary in the mouth but with a bit of time and swirling it is a really refined drink. Cherries and red fruits with some tar and a great long finish. This has a few more decades left. Tonight I rate it 94.

  • Prior bottle was 2 and a quarter years ago and my notes were very consistent. Nose remains red cherry, earth and notes of leather and tar notes. Full bodied and when first opened (at cellar temperature) this was far too cool as it showed as tight and quite tannic. After warming to room temperature and being open for almost five hours, it finally began to demonstrate why I liked my prior bottles so much. Red cherry upfront showing a good mix of roundness and brightness. Mid-body has depth, but still feels a bit closed. It has polish, but only once it warms up. Spices, earth and tart red fruit on the backside. This wine is still not at peak and I will actually wait on my next bottle until at least June 2021, perhaps even 2022 to give this a chance to express itself fully.

  • I thought I had pulled out a Costa Grimaldi, but as soon as I tasted it I knew it was the Cannubi because of the tannins. On the first day, this showed cherry and menthol on the nose; on the palate, dark fruit, black tea, menthol, and notes of tar and rose petal, with powerful smooth tannins on the medium to long finish. The fruit was muted compared to the earthy notes, and this seemed largely closed down even after two hours. On the second day, it had opened up and showed more dark fruit, less tannin, and more integration. This is classic old-school Barolo, and it needs much more time to evolve. The Cellartracker drinking window on this is unaccountably early and short. At this stage it should be decanted for several hours, and it may not really open up out of the bottle for five years or more; it will improve for many years after that. This was an amazing bargain on sale at a little over $40, although I wish I had waited longer to open it.

  • Second Black Hills Wine Group Blind Wine Tasting Event - Italian Reds (Black Hills of South Dakota): Wine #7 (labeled as Wine #4). Our wine, stored for several years in our cellar. Long, clean cork in excellent shape. Double-decanted over 3.5 hours before bringing. A medium garnet in the glass (under less than optimal lighting), with an intriguing nose of cola, pretty blue fruits and citrus, with a touch of matchstick. Juicy palate entry with excellent intensity, concentration and acidity, leading to a long finish amidst a veritable wall of tannins! Most tannic wine in the lineup. I guessed this was a 2012 Italy Barolo. My placing: #4 out of 7.

Edit: In retrospect, our last bottle, and was even more tannic than our previous bottle consumed over eight years ago. Not sure there is enough fruit to accompany the formidable tannins long-term. Would like to revisit 5-10 years down the road. A monster of wine.

  • a beautiful barolo; tar, rose, mushroom; a bit fuller in the body and length compared to the sebaste 2000 i had next to this bottle

  • Classic Barolo. Florals, black tea, and cherries. Mouthcoating with omnipresent tannins. Very drinkable but those tannins seem to expand with air.

  • Q1 - 2018 Tasting - Aged Barolo Theme (NY, NY): 3/17 wines tasted double blind. Ruby red no browning on this at all - so appears younger than #2 but the palate tastes much more advanced - leaning to musty, not a lot of fruit here. Very little aromatics also - perhaps mild TCA? 1.5*

  • Aged Barolo (aka Q1 wine club) (The Apt): Wine #3: Interesting that for a wine this young the primary characteristics to me were still library and leather and cigar. I actually pegged this as having more age than it did. The acidity was well balanced and structure was there. With a bit of time some black fruits came through. It needed time to open up and prob would have been happier with a decant. (4 pennies)

  • Red cherry, earth, leather and floral notes on the classic and aromatic nose. Full bodied with a beautiful mix of black and red cherry upfront, adding brighter, lighter strawberry and deeper, richer black raspberry through the middle. Spices, plums and earth on the long finish. As with my prior bottle from two months ago, shows polished, elegant fruit through the middle. Has an almost youthful amount of brightness to the fruit and structure to the tannins. Overall, very similar notes to my prior bottle with the one exception being that this bottle simply felt younger overall, without perhaps the degree of integration and balance previously shown. I may have lowered my score on today's bottle ever so slightly for that, but long term, it will be a good thing as it tells me this wine has many years ahead of it. Might wait as long as Fall 2018 for my next bottle.

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Alpharetta, GA): Darker core with dull crimson orange rim; orange peel, menthol, cherry liqueur, fennel, medicinal, some oak, mahogany; great texture, full and complete, a little smoke finishing with some chew to the tannin; very good, delicious.

  • Dried red cherries on the nose, along with plum, blackfruit and some beautifully intense floral qualities. Noticeably more aromatic than the 2001 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne from the prior night. Nearly full bodied (14% ABV) and impeccably polished and elegant. A simply stunningly beautiful Barolo with outstanding complexity through the middle, showcasing a mix of black and red cherry, strawberry and black raspberry. Integrated spices, tar and plum notes make up the finish that lasts and lasts. I was struck by the purity of the fruit through the middle as well as the fantastic depth this wine possesses. The evolving and complex fruit plays off the backbone/tannic structure of the wine so exceptionally well and integrates so nearly seamlessly with the finishing notes; this wine was a true joy. The vibrancy that this wine demonstrates tells me it should have 5+ years or more at this level. I'll be getting some more for sure. (Taverna delle Rose; Torino, Italy)

  • So much better than the last time. More expressive and generous, even right after opening. Cola, roses, tar, and minerals. Transparent and detailed finish. Very nice.

  • This showed nicely right from the first pour. The aromatics were lovely. Cherries and roses with apparent, but soft, tannins. The finish was deliciously long. Perfectly balanced and drinking well now.

  • Nose is a touch muted initially but opens up to menthol, baking spices, plum, cherry, rose petals and asphalt.
Palate is full bodied and just so spicy....so floral and yet the overwhelming impression is of the texture....not the flavours. This is really polished and complex. Cinnamon, baking spices, Asian 5 spice, cherry nibs, liquefied roses, minerals, tar, plum and menthol.
Finish is long, layered and complex with the overwhelming scale of pure fruit, bright flowers and spice notes all coming together in a symphonic symmetry. This is so Barolo....so Cannubi. Only thing holding this back from classic is the shy nose.

  • Decanted for 3 or 4 hours. Dark, earthy fruit, roses and minerals. Focused and elegant, but not especially involving.

  • This was very open and fresh with aromas of bright cherries and rose petals. Excellent clarity, perfect concentration and great follow through with strong acidity and smooth tannins. Delicious!

  • No guesses- it was mine. Opened about 7 hours before serving, in a decanter for middle 2 of those hours (lots of sediment, including one strange glob), a rather tannic wine had softened a bit. Red fruits, a little tar, some oak notes, this seems somewhat modern, but not over the top. Good acids, some floral notes as it gets more air. I’m a little disappointed but at end of night like more.

  • - Ruby color. It's balanced with a medium body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Drank at Lakefront in Mammoth Lakes.. Went very well with bison tail risotto.. Well balanced.. This pretty girl from the cannubi needed not decant!! I drank a 2001 vietti brunate a couple days before.. This was much for approachable

  • Light-footed with high toned plums; savoury undertones. Decent but did not blow me away though.

  • Accademia del Barolo Auction and Truffle Dinner (Gattopardo Restaurant, Hotel Fort Canning, Singapore): Like its flight-mate, the 2004 Gagliardo Serre, this was decently good without being great. The nose was a bit tight even though this had been decanted for some time, with subtle notes of smoke tar, earth and a bit of furry, meaty notes hanging around slightly sweeter notes of black fruit and roses. The palate was surprisingly a lot more open though, and drinking quite early for a 2004 Barolo. This had fleshy black fruit, shading from blackcurrants to blackberries, and then some black olives in a nicely spicy, earthy undertone. Quite charming and light-footed I thought, but perhaps lacking the substance of the better 2004s in the next flight. It finished as it begain, with a touch of tar and olives soaked in some chewy tannins. Surprisingly forward I thought, but this will of course still improve over the next decade or more.

  • Decanted 1.5 hrs. Tight initially. Really nice traditional style. Cherry, red fruits, spice and a bit of mint on the nose. Really well balanced on the palate showing slightly tart cherry and red berries, with minerals and spices. At least a medium finish with some oak and drying tannins. Hardly any secondary notes at this time. I would guess another couple years to peak and should drink nicely for many years. I'll open another in 2 yrs.

  • Decanted and poured, this wine showed well with excellent balance and nice combination of youthful and mature notes. The aromatics remain youthful with an underlying maturity. The color is a translucent medium ruby that is correct for the wine age. The medium bodied palate shows balance and medium length finish where tannins and acidity remain present. This is nearing its peak but may benefit from an additional year or two of bottle age.

  • Confraria - Barolos e Barbarescos (Casa do Carlao): Mais um barolo de grande estrutura. Tambem tanico, bem jovem mas com grande potencial. Complexidade e persistencia incriveis.

  • Double decanted over 2.5 hours, this dark garnet Barolo featured an intriguing nose of dark cherry, blue/black fruits, leather, tobacco and spice. The palate was silky smooth, but still just a touch reserved. Continued to open up in the glass, and by the end of our meal was really coming on strongly. Wonderful fruit, supporting acid and tannins, good precision, and an excellent pairing with baked rigatoni with spicy Italian sausage. We wanted to consume an excellent bottle on this evening, and did we ever!

  • Outstanding wine that outclassed several other Barolos at a recent tasting at the Wine Club (SF). Tasted from two separate bottles: first one at the Wine Club and then loved it so much I brought a bottle home an popped the cork that night. Decanted. Terrific floral nose of spice and red fruit, great structure, outstanding mouthfeel, really smooth tannins. Definitely composed to age but drinking beautifully now. This wine, when tasted head to head, outclassed the 04 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barbaresco Vürsù Vigneto Valeirano, the 04 Giovanni Corino Barolo Vigneto Arborina, the 04 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis, the 03 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi, and the 04 Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana. The next day the wine picked up some wonderful old world style aromas but kept its fruit and structure. A very memorable Barolo. Has the potential to gain pts with age. 85 bucks.

  • Late Vintage Nebbioli (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Pale, looks like a Pinot. Not that forthcoming but distinct minty aromas. Lean but not scrawny with a good balanced feel, but this has some harsher, late arriving tannins which give a sense of some austerity today.

  • Kozlaks 2004 barolo tasting: Good barolo. I preferred the costa grimaldi bottling from this producer which had a more expressive nose and a slightly firmer structure.

  • This wine was decanted prior to serving and tasted side by side with the 2004 Luigi Pira, Barolo, Vigna Marenca. The Einaudi showed wonderful, seamless aromatics of red cherry, floral notes, spice and tar. The color of the wine was a dark brick red. Like the Pira, this wine was tight on the palate. During its time in the decanter the wine continuously showed wonderful aromatics; however, decanting could not coax the palate to lose some of its angry, disjointedness. The palate shows a lot of potential with solid structure and a rich concentration, it just did not want to reveal its potential nuances and complexity. This wine will require some patience to reveal its best.
