81 Points

Thursday, March 22, 2007 - Once Upon a Vine XIII - New Orleans, LA by Martin Wine Cellar (Pavillion of Two Sisters): Admit it, the only people who actually like this wine are newbies to the wine world who have only been drinking or collecting wine for all of about a month. Even so, I have no idea how people can give this wine the 94 or 95 points that I have seen in some Cellartracker reviews, unless they either accidentally typed in a "9" instead of an"8" or "7" or they burnt all of their taste buds off with a hot piece of pizza. This is just overhyped swill that doesn't remotely do justice to what Pinot Grigio can be when its made by a quality producer. The color is decent, but thats where mediocrity ends and viticultural tragedy begins. This simply tastes like dirty well-water with a touch of lemon. The acidity is off balance, there is a bitter green flavor that reminds me of raw, unripe asparagus, and the only good thing that can be said about the finish is that it is mercifully short, a blessing in disguise. This wine is so angular and unbalanced that its like you've got a mouth full of glass shards and citric acid. This is going to sound strange to many people, but to me, the one thing that this tasted like more than anything else was the sour/bitter tasting glue that the orthodontist used to put on my braces years and years ago. I've seen this wine selling in stores at prices anywhere between $16 and $45, and truth be told, it isn't even worth half of the lower end. Steer yourself far away from this drivel at all costs. Sure, they have great marketing/advertising, which is why they sell so much to the new, or inexperienced, wine drinkers............but if they focused more of their money and efforts on winemaking then maybe they would have a worthwhile product to promote.
