2004 Giaconda Shiraz Warner Vineyard

Likes this wine:

95 Points

Saturday, July 20, 2013 - Dark ruby and purple, and shows some age.
On the nose it's lots of smoke, graphite, asphalt, some meat/blood and hint of dark fruit (blackberry). First it reminds me of South Africa.
Good acidity, but the wine seems unbalanced up to 12 h. There is not fruit enough to meet the alcohol, tannins and acidity. The structure did not impress either, though it has some minerality that I like.

The day after I was surprised how this wine had evolved. On the nose it offered spicebox, tea, burnt underbrush, white pepper, meat, tosted herbs ... almost like a good Vosne-Romanée ... or even like Morey-Saint-Denis ... Grand Cru ... dark, powerful ... yet sensual and intellectual. Complex nose.

The wine got more complex on the palate too and became balanced after 12h.
Very french in style. Herbs, meat, blood, dark fruit, blackberries, white pepper, french oak. Good structure and nice minerality.
Quite long finish with an elegant touch.

This wine was certainly not what I expected at first, and I must admit I was a bit disappointed. But the day after this wine left a big smile on my face! 88-89 points transformed to 95 points the day after.
This wine improves with time in the glass ... and in decanter.
It is worth the 125$ I spent!

This wine is like an actor. Shifting, spellbinding, intellectual, sensual, dazzling, intelligent, beautiful. Reminds me of Charlize Theron.
