Thursday, May 25, 2017 - This is a slightly odd, one-off from Knoll. It had an unusually high must weight in 2012 and didn’t ferment to complete dryness – hence why it is not labeled as Smaragd - and was actually bottled alongside the 2013 Smaragds.

I brought it to a friend’s 40th birthday dinner, where it paired with the main course of @ottolenghi's 18-hour slow-cooked, sweet-and-sour pork. And, oh man, did it go together perfectly.

The wine was notably viscous (it clocks in at 14.5% abv), with a cornucopia of aromas (citrus, almond, oolong are a few that I remember) and was noticeably off-dry on the palate, but with a line of acidity that kept things coming. White pepper notes punctuated the luscious (kind of candied) tropical fruit, honey and caramel notes. I think this will age quite well, but it was certainly drinking nicely already
A great deal on a closeout sale from @zachys meant I picked this up for under $40.

Fun bit of trivia, for those not in the Knoll: the beautiful, distinctive label features St. Urban, patron saint of vineyards and winemakers .
